  • Patent number: 5975404
Abstract: In a method and apparatus for manufacturing an optical fiber cable, a metal band is gradually shaped into a lengthwise slotted tube, the optical fibers are introduced into the still open slotted tube, the lengthwise slot of the tube is welded and the outside diameter of the welded tube is reduced. The welded tube with the reduced outside diameter is wound at least once around a take-up reel. A force provided on the reduced outside diameter welded tube as it is wound on the take-up reel causes an elastic strain of 0.1 to 0.6% on the tube. The strain is released on the take-up reel to produce an overlength of the optical fibers relative to the reduced outside diameter welded tube.

  • Patent number: 5843199
Abstract: During the fire-polishing of a lengthwise extended glass body (3), for example a preform for drawing optical fibers, the glass body (3) is held by a holding device (5, 7), and is heated by a burner (23) moving at a variable advancing speed parallel to the lengthwise axis (19). The surface temperature of the glass body (3) is determined with a temperature measuring device (25). The mechanical stress condition of the glass body (3) is detected with an optical device (29) and can be controlled by varying the burner temperature and/or the advancing speed of the burner. The invention makes it possible to counteract the occurrence of high mechanical stresses in the glass body (3).

  • Patent number: 5831215
Abstract: A high frequency coaxial cable (1) contains a concentric internal conductor (3), a cylindrical insulating layer (7) surrounding the internal conductor (3) and made of a foamed plastic containing more than 50% by volume of air, a tubular external conductor (9) placed over the insulating layer (7), and an outer sheath (11). Cutouts (15, 15') are made in the insulating layer (7) by removing insulation material starting at the periphery (13) of the insulating layer and extending radially inward. These cutouts (15, 15') make it possible to increase the dielectric properties of the insulating layer between internal conductor (3) and external conductor (9).

  • Patent number: 5708447
Abstract: An antenna includes a parabolic reflector and a supply line attached thereto. The supply line includes two rectangular electromagnetic (waveguides) that are essentially parallel to each other. A tube-shaped exciter is common to the (waveguides) and is located at open ends of the waveguides. A back side of the reflector has a mechanically stable receptacle, which is used to attach the reflector to a support. The receptacle includes a metal ring with an L-shaped cross section in an opening that corresponds to a central opening in the reflector. The ring has a cylindrical area and, at a right angle to the cylindrical area, a base area that extends toward the inside of the ring. In the installed position, the cylindrical area of the ring penetrates and is centered in the opening of the reflector. A holding plate, which firmly surrounds and supports both waveguides, fits precisely into the ring and is attached to the ring in removable form when mounted.

  • Patent number: 5705790
Abstract: A method is indicated for igniting a welding arc between a fixed electrode and a metal workpiece to be welded, whereby a covering protective gas is supplied by a nozzle that extends into the welding area. Before a welding power source is switched on for the welding arc, an auxiliary arc supplied by an auxiliary power source is ignited, which ignites the welding arc after the welding power source is switched on. To better ionize the welding area and ensure the ignition of the auxiliary welding arc, a high-frequency electric arc is produced in the welding area between the nozzle and the workpiece by means of a pulse generator which produces high-frequency high-voltage pulses.
