Abstract: A method, system and computer program product for instant message communication in a wireless and non-wireless environment. A message is sent from a mobile unit device over a wireless communication network. The message includes a destination address, information associated with the mobile unit device's user, message content and message address. If, according to information previously stored for the mobile unit device's user at the instant message system, the destination address is associated with an instant message function, the associated instant message function is executed at the instant message system using the information contained in the message content, if required as determined by the associated instant message function.

Abstract: A system and process for augmenting automated agents to search network based data stores generate a set of rules that describes the contents contained within structured data stores. This set of rules allows an automated agent to perform a focused search of a structured data store, thus eliminating searching for unnecessary content. The structure of the data store is defined and entities are categorized. Additionally, templates are created defining data, such as metadata fields, related to the entities. These definitions, categorizations, and templates are incorporated into the set of rules, which is utilized by the agent to search a data store on a network, such as a web site.

Abstract: The disclosed system translates into different languages HTML documents available through the World Wide Web. HTML documents are translated by machine translation software bundled in a browser. Alternatively, documents are retrieved as needed, translated, and stored on a Web server so user requests are serviced with a document that has been translated from a different language. The disclosed invention expands usage of the Internet for non-English speakers.

Abstract: Systems and methods for sorting electronic messages using attributes of senders or of sender addresses. An electronic messaging server sorts electronic messages using attributes associated with the senders or sender addresses of the electronic messages. The sender addresses and associated attributes are stored in an accept list. A sorting module uses the accept list to sort the electronic messages into various folders. The sorting module can also access other data sources, such as a contact list, to assist in sorting the electronic messages. The attributes can be determined independently of the user or can be set directly by the user. The attributes can also identify a status of a sender such as whether the sender is authorized, unauthorized, or unconfirmed.

Abstract: The present invention addresses the critical needs of publishers seeking to create and publish hypermedia content in electronic form across the wide area networks (“WAN's”) such as the World Wide Web. Toward this end, a client-server development platform is provided for handling the important functions of document authoring, content-based indexing and retrieval of documents, management and control of proprietary assets, and a support for developing form-driven interactive services, all in a manner that is uniquely and seamlessly WAN-integrated.

Abstract: A wireless network with multiple subscriber systems in a lobe pool may operate by determining a state of the wireless network, identifying a new condition, the new condition including a new demand condition or a new network health condition, determining whether the new condition has a threshold impact on operations of the wireless network or component subscriber systems of the wireless network, and if the threshold impact exists, reconfiguring the wireless network to accommodate the new condition.

Abstract: Determining whether a call forward busy service is enabled on a telephone line includes placing a first test call across a network to the telephone line. First signaling data is received through the network in response to the first test call. The first signaling data is evaluated to determine whether the first test call is inspiring a ringing condition. A second test call is placed across the network conditioned on whether the first signaling data indicates that the first test call is determined to be inspiring a ringing condition. The second test call is placed while the first test call remains inspiring ringing. Second signaling data is received through the network in response to the second test call. A call forward busy service is concluded to be enabled on the telephone line based on whether the second test call is determined to be inspiring a ringing condition.

Abstract: A secure distributed single-login authentication system comprises a client and a server. The client collects a user name and password from a user and tests that user name and password at a variety of potential authentication servers to check where the login is valid. It combines the password with a time varying salt and a service specific seed in a message digesting hash and generates a first hash value. The client sends the hash value along with the user name and the time varying salt to a currently selected server. The server extracts the user name and looks up an entry under the user name from the selected server's database. If an entry is found, it retrieves the password and performs the same hash function on the combination of the user name, the service specific seed, and the retrieved password to generate a second hash value. Then, it compares two hash values. If these two values match, the user is authenticated.

Abstract: Navigating on a display includes tracking motion of an input tool on a display, comparing a motion of the input tool to a threshold, and changing a position of the visible portion of a page of information on the display if the input tool motion exceeds the threshold. The position of the visible portion of the page of information on the display is constrained if the motion does not exceed the threshold.

Abstract: Certain disclosed implementations use digital image processing to reduce the differential resolution among separations or images in film frames, such as, for example, red flare. A location in the red image may be selected using information from another image. The selected location may be modified using information from that other image. The selection may include comparing features of an edge in the first image with features of a corresponding edge in the other image. The modification may include performing wavelet transformations of the two images and copying certain coefficients (or a function of these coefficients) produced by the application of the transformation to the second image to the coefficients produced by the application of the transformation to the first image. The copied coefficients may be correlated with the selected location. Other disclosed techniques vary from the above and may be applied to other fields.

Abstract: Groups of network devices may be identified automatically based on interface tags associated with network device interfaces such that network devices within a group are automatically identified, periodically or otherwise, based on an association of one or more common interface tags between the group and the network device interface.

Abstract: A user of an instant messaging system may store names of other users of the instant messaging system on a participant list (which may be referred to as a “buddy list”), and the names may be categorized into one or more groups. Similarly, a user of a mobile device, such as a mobile telephone, may store contact information about people on the mobile device. Information describing the on-line presence of the user within the instant messaging system or geographic location of a mobile device, such as a mobile telephone associated with the user system, may be disseminated to users on the participant list or people on the contact list based on notification information that is associated with groups of users or contacts. A delegation model is used to control whether a user is permitted to make modifications to the notification information.

Abstract: Navigating on a display includes tracking motion of an input tool on a display, comparing a motion of the input tool to a threshold, and changing a position of the visible portion of a page of information on the display if the input tool motion exceeds the threshold. The position of the visible portion of the page of information on the display is constrained if the motion does not exceed the threshold.

Abstract: The invention provides a process for updating electronic information in a computer environment. A preferred embodiment of the invention automatically inspects a message that is to be delivered to a first address upon receiving the message to determine whether the message contains information about a status of a second address. In response to a determination that the message contains information about the status of the second address, a record for the second address in a database is updated. The record is a portion of an address book of the first user in the database. The message is stored at the first address for retrieval by a first user at the first address. When the status indicates a permanent error in delivering a message to the second address, the address book is updated according to a user preference.

Abstract: A method is described for optimizing the user-experienced availability and responsiveness of a replicated authentication system via the use of client-side authentication routing logic. Particular techniques are described for maximizing the authentication system availability and additionally either 1) bounding the user-experienced authentication latency, or 2) minimizing the user-experienced authentication latency.

Abstract: A method of providing interoperability between an open standard directory service and a proprietary database. The directory is represented as a mapping tree, consistent with directory service protocols such as X.500 or LDAP. The mapping tree node associated with the proprietary database is configured as a null suffix mapping tree entry, so that database mapping tree node replaces root of the mapping tree and the proprietary database the default backend of the directory service. The core server of the directory service is configured to recognize the null suffix mapping tree entry. All directory service operations are routed to a pre-operation plug-in that handles operations in the proprietary database, and remaining operations are redirected to the core server, preserving default functionality of the directory service. Normal data constraints are suspended for operations performed in the proprietary database.

Abstract: Access to network information may be restricted based on a classification of the network information. When a request for network information is received, a classification of the network information is determined. The network information may be classified as static or dynamic. If the network information is classified as static, a rating of the content that corresponds to the network information is determined. If the network information is dynamic, the network information is accessed, and a rating of the content associated with the network information is generated. After determining a content rating, the content rating is compared to the user access information of user making the request for the network information. Based on the comparison, it is determined if access to network information is approved. If approved, the content is retrieved and/or access is granted; otherwise, the access to the network information is restricted or blocked.

Abstract: Compressing the digitized time-domain continuous input signal typically includes formatting the input signal into a plurality of time-domain blocks having boundaries, forming an overlapping time-domain block by prepending a fraction of a previous time-domain block to a current time-domain block, transforming each overlapping time-domain block to a transform domain block including a plurality of coefficients, partitioning the coefficients of each transform domain block into signal coefficients and residue coefficients, quantizing the signal coefficients for each transformed domain block and generating signal quantization indices indicative of such quantization, modeling the residue coefficients for each transform domain block as stochastic noise and generating residue quantization indices indicative of such quantization, and formatting the signal quantization indices and the residue quantization indices for each transform domain block as an output bit-stream. The continuous data may include audio data.

Abstract: A messaging application user interface has an input element for receiving electronic messages and an output element for displaying electronic messages. The messaging application user interface can be implemented so as to maintain a subset of the plurality of potential message recipients, the subset being determined using a predetermined criterion. The messaging application user interface also can be implemented so as to auto-complete a partially entered address based on the subset of potential message recipients. A set of user-selectable signals that modify auto-completion behavior also can be used with the messaging application user interface. The messaging application user interface can be used in an instant messaging system to allow a user to send instant messages to and exchange comments with a plurality of other users without having to switch among several instant message windows.

Abstract: A system for searching a network for network based content related to a search query, such as multimedia and streaming media, includes an adapter for formatting the search query, a first database containing previous search results and a second database for storing currently returnable metadata, a search processor, and at least one search engine kernel comprising a search engine inherent database. The search engine coordinates searching of the first database and the second database, and and provides the formatted search query to the search engine kernel. The search processor also provides and receives search results to and from the first database and the second database, and provides search results to the adapter. The system stores a predetermined amount of previous search results in the first database, such that search results for a current search are retrieved from the database, avoiding a search through search engine kernel, comprising searchable metadata.
