Abstract: A well tool such as a multiple string tubing hanger is installed remotely with the aid of a handling tool which has a hydraulically actuated component and a locator device movable between a retracted inactive position and an extended position in which the locator device engages in a locator slot in a surrounding member to orient the well tool in a predetermined rotational position relative to the surrounding member, a pressure fluid conduit of the handling tool being connected to the hydraulically actuated component and a valve associated with the locator device in parallel so that full pressure on the hydraulically actuated component cannot be built up except when the locator key is in its extended position.
Abstract: A process for the production of cube-on-edge oriented silicon steel of high permeability which comprises varying the temperature of the initial anneal and the quench starting temperature of the hot rolled steel in accordance with the aluminum and nitrogen contents of the steel. The initial anneal temperature ranges from about 1040.degree. to 1175.degree. C. and the quench starting temperature from about 700.degree. to 1090.degree. C. Improved permeability and core loss values are obtained over relatively broad aluminum and nitrogen ranges, viz., 0.024% to 0.040% total aluminum and 0.0050% to 0.0090% nitrogen, by ladle analysis.

Abstract: In devices, such as well tools, components which must support heavy loads are connected by a simple fastening device capable of transferring the heavy load from one component to the other, with the load being accepted by the fastening means in compression, and with the fastening means occupying only a small radial space.
Abstract: In devices, such as well tools, where two telescopically related members are telescopically related, the two members are connected together by a split ring in such fashion that loads are transferred from one member to the other via the split ring with the split ring accepting the load in compression.
Abstract: The application discloses a method of terne coating, and a terne coated product, wherein the tin content of the terne is substantially lower than in conventional terne, without the need for other alloying elements in substitution for tin, such as zinc, antimony, silver, and phosphorus. The tin content of the terne bath is lowered below conventional percentages, to between about 2% and about 6.5% and the terne coated product, upon emerging from the coating bath, is jet finished. Such a terne coat has improved solderability and appearance with no change in pinhole frequency. Coating weight control is easier than with a terne coat having 7% or more tin in the bath.
Abstract: The formation of a composite formed by spreading a liquid thermosetting resin over a continuously moving plastic film or sheet. Chopped fiber is added and a fabric or veil, such as dacron polyester cloth, is continuously laid over the top to form a reinforced composite. This continuously produced thermosetting resin composite is rolled into a coil. After a maturation period, the plastic film or sheet may be removed from the SMC composite and sections of appropriate size and weight are cut from the coil and placed over the die of a compression molding machine, veil side down, up or both. The material is then compression molded at a pressure of 500-3000 p.s.i. (35 to 210 kg. per sq. cm.) and a temperature of 100.degree.-165.degree. C., and cured into an article. The fabric used has a grab break strength of at least 10 lbs. (4.5 kg.
Abstract: Tool for giving remote indications, typically both a change in fluid pressure and a televised image, to check whether a device is in a desired position. The invention is particularly useful for checking whether a component, such as a pipe hanger, has been properly landed in an underwater well installation.
Abstract: Indicator valve unit for providing a change in fluid pressure as a remote indication of whether an object occupies a desired position. Particularly useful for indicating whether a component, such as a multiple string tubing hanger, has been properly oriented and landed in an underwater well installation, the indicator valve unit provides for automatic separation of the sensing element of the unit from the sensed object as soon as the valve has been actuated.
Abstract: A coupling device, especially for well tools, for connecting a load, such as a tubing hanger from which tubing strings depend, to an upper member, such as a handling tool, from which the load is to be suspended, with capability of remote operation of the coupling device to disconnect the load and to reconnect. To provide heavy load capability when only a relatively small space is available for the coupling, coupling segments of generally C-shaped radial cross section are employed, the segments being actuated by a piston moved axially of the coupling.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for installing multiple strings of pipe in underwater wells in which, just prior to landing of the hanger for the multiple pipe strings, the weight of the strings is carried by a support ring releasably secured to a body member through an antifriction bearing so that rotational orientation can be accomplished.
Abstract: A low cost austenitic stainless steel having a high work hardening rate and good ductility if drastically cold reduced, consisting essentially of, in weight percent, 0.05% maximum carbon, 1.5% to 3.0% manganese, about 0.06% maximum phosphorus, about 0.035% maximum sulfur, about 1% maximum silicon, about 15% to about 20% chromium, 3% to 4.7% nickel, 1.75% to 3% copper, 0.10% to 0.30% nitrogen, up to about 0.3% columbium, titanium, tantalum or mixtures thereof, and balance essentially iron. The steel has particular utility in fabrication of cold headed fasteners.
Abstract: Improved latch means for well tools, such as retrieving or handling tools, and well components, such as tubing hangers and casing hangers, employing latch segments disposed in an annular series in an outwardly opening groove free from the usual windowed retaining lip. The segments are retained in the groove by the annular means used to retract the segments, and that means is improved both as to capability of retaining the segments in the groove and its ability to be actuated for retraction of the segments.
Abstract: In a remotely installed underwater well apparatus, a tubular body, typically a multiple string tubing hanger, is landed in a position oriented rotationally with respect to a reference point on the apparatus and a seal device is then energized by the same tool employed to land and orient the tubular body.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for remote installation and retrieval of underwater well apparatus and servicing of underwater wells without diver assistance by use of a remotely operated tool carried by a handling string including a composite lower joint which contains both smaller flow passages for conveying pressure fluid to the tool and larger passages for communicating with pipe in the well, the composite joint being of sufficient length to extend completely through the blowout preventers when the tool is in operative position and having a right cylindrical outer surface against which the blowout preventers can seal regardless of the rotational position of the composite joint. The invention is especially useful in connection with wells having multiple strings of tubing.
Abstract: A hanger apparatus for suspending an upright inner pipe from an outer pipe including a hanger body carried by the outer pipe, a hanger mandrel carried by the inner pipe, and a split locking ring carried in a recess in the hanger mandrel, the hanger body having a groove for receiving a rib on the locking ring and the hanger mandrel having a load-bearing shoulder received on a corresponding shoulder on the locking ring. The locking ring has a thick main body portion and a thin, flexible skirt depending therefrom. A rib on the hanger mandrel has an upwardly facing lifting surface for contacting a downwardly facing lifting surface formed as an upper wall in a transverse groove in the locking ring main body portion to provide a positive engagement during retrieval of the inner pipe. A guard rib below the lifting rib is releasably coupled to the hanger mandrel so the locking ring can be slipped into the mandrel with a minimum of distortion.
Abstract: Means and a method for reclaiming galvanizing quality zinc alloy from the top dross of a continuous galvanizing line. A dross furnace is provided having front, rear and side walls and a hearth sloping from the rear wall toward the front wall. The front wall is provided with one or more tap holes or a full width slot so sized as to permit the passage of molten zinc alloy therethrough while retaining the resulting sponge or slag. The dross furnace is located with its front wall overhanging the coating pot of the continuous galvanizing line. The dross furnace is maintained at a temperature of from about 460.degree. C. to about 850.degree. C. and is charged with the top dross from the coating pot. The top dross has a residence time in the dross furnace of up to about two hours. The reclaimed galvanizing quality zinc alloy, at yields from about 50% to about 70% based upon the top dross treated, flows directly back into the coating pot.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for multiple string well completions by remote operations in underwater installations, by which the tubing strings are installed independently rather than simultaneously.
Abstract: A ferritic steel having improved creep or sag resistance and oxidation resistance at temperatures ranging from about 732.degree. to 1093.degree.
