Patent number: 5336856Abstract: An active noise cancellation system is used to quiet engine exhaust noise. Combustion product from an engine passes through a conduit to an acoustical mixing chamber located in the tailpipe. A microphone senses noise in the vicinity of the tailpipe and provides a signal to a control unit. The control unit generates a controlling signal sent to one or more speakers mounted in a housing that is coupled to the tailpipe. Sound produced by the speakers enters the mixing chamber to mix with and cancel sound from the combustion product exiting he conduit. Some embodiments include a muffler housing forming an interior chamber which is divided into two sub-chambers. Other embodiments include a muffler having an outer housing enclosing an inner housing. Variations have been devised regarding the number of speakers mounted in each chamber and the way in which they are mounted.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 1993Date of Patent: August 9, 1994Assignee: Arvin Industries, Inc.Inventors: James K. Patent number: 5245409Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for on-line, real-time imaging and inspecting a seam weld on a moving tube in a conventional tube forming environment. The apparatus is in a compact container sealed from workplace contaminants. A planar light source directs a steady plane of light by using mirrors, through an aperture in the container and onto the tube seam at a 45.degree. angle relative to the tube axis, forming a light pattern on the moving tube. A camera in the container images the light, again at 45.degree. relative to the tube axis, and said image is displayed remotely on a conventional video monitor. An operator interprets the light pattern image and adjusts the tube forming apparatus accordingly.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 1991Date of Patent: September 14, 1993Assignee: Arvin Industries, Inc.Inventor: Ronald A.
