  • Patent number: 5625203
Abstract: A controlled turn-off power semiconductor device is proposed which is subdivided into unit cells and which comprises five layers in a p-n-p-n-p sequence, namely a p-type emitter layer (9), an n-type base layer (8), a p-type base layer (7), an n-type emitter layer (6) and a p-doped contact region (5) between an anode (a) and a cathode (K). In every unit cell a first MOSFET (M1) which can be driven via a first insulated gate (G1) is provided on the cathode side for switching between the five-layer structure and a conventional thyristor four-layer structure. Further, a breakdown between the contact region (5) and the n-type emitter layer (6) is prevented during turning-off. As a result of the switchable five-layer structure, a current filamentation is effectively avoided during turning-off.

  • Patent number: 5493247
Abstract: In a circuit for hard driving a GTO, the conductor inductance (L1) and the internal inductance of the GTO (L2) form, together with a first capacitor (C1) situated in parallel via a switch (S), a series resonance circuit inside the gate circuit. In this connection, the chosen sizes of the first capacitor (C1) and of the first inductance (L1) are such that, if the first capacitor (C1) discharges via the two inductances (L1, L2), the gate current originating from the first capacitor (C1) exceeds half the value of a GTO anode current to be turned off within less than 5 .mu.s in the first quarter cycle of the series oscillatory circuit. Moreover, first means are provided which uncouple the first capacitor (C1) from the generation of the gate current after the first quarter cycle of the resonance circuit and allows the gate current to decay slowly in such a way that, at any time, it is greater than the tail current of the GTO.

  • Patent number: 5482457
Abstract: In a gas-operated premixing burner for the combustion chamber of a gas turbine, the fuel injected within a premixing space (21) by means of a plurality of nozzles (17) is intensively mixed with the combustion air prior to ignition. The nozzles are arranged around a burner axis (10). In order to influence the fuel profile at outlet from the burner in a specific manner, the fuel concentration in the region of the burner axis is kept greater than the average fuel concentration at the burner outlet plane (22). For this purpose, additional burner nozzles (23) are provided in the region of the burner axis (10). The additional burner nozzles (23) can be supplied via a separate fuel conduit (24).

  • Patent number: 5465577
Abstract: In a gas turbine combustion chamber, which consists of an inlet zone (1) with injection, an ignition delay zone (2), a reaction zone (3), a burn-out zone (4) and a transition zone (5) to the turbine, the reaction zone (3) has a cross-section which increases in such a way that the gas dynamics of the combustion process can take place at constant pressure or constant Mach number. By this means, the total pressure loss and the combustion chamber length necessary for the combustion are reduced and this is reflected in an improvement to the efficiency and the output.

  • Patent number: 5431752
Abstract: The component comprises a body (5) composed of an alloy based on a .gamma.-titanium aluminide, a steel body (2) and a connecting piece (4) composed of a nickel-base alloy. The .gamma.-titanium aluminide body (5) and the steel body (2) are rigidly joined together by means of the connecting piece (4). The joint between the .gamma.-titanium aluminide body (5) and the connecting piece (4) is produced by friction welding. The nickel-base alloy has a nickel content of less than 65 percent by weight. This achieves the result that the friction-welding joint of the .gamma.-titanium aluminide body (5) to the connecting piece (4) can be produced at comparatively low temperatures. During the friction welding, the risk of crack formations in the embrittlement-prone .gamma.-titanium aluminide body (5) is therefore appreciably reduced.

  • Patent number: 5421190
Abstract: The device serves to measure the density of a gas, in particular of the insulating gas of a gas-insulated electrical installation. It contains two resonators (11, 12) each comprising a piezoelectric crystal (14, 15) and each comprising two electrodes applied to the crystal. A first (11) of the two resonators (11, 12) is mounted in a first chamber (5) containing the gas to be measured, whereas a second (12) is mounted in a second chamber (6) sealed with respect to the gas.Despite small dimensions and despite simple and robust construction, this device is intended to have a high measurement precision over a long period of time. This is achieved by drawing the two resonators (11, 12) from a multiplicity of similar resonators manufactured by mass production and not subjected to a frequency alignment. The first resonator (11) is unaltered with respect to the manufacture in mass production.

  • Patent number: 5416398
Abstract: A synchronous machine (22) can be run up with increasing frequency by a controllable frequency converter (21) with an opened switch (S1) and a closed switch (S2), the exciter direct current for its exciter winding (22E) being supplied by a starting converter (23). When the synchronous machine (22) is operated from the power system, it is excited by the direct-current link of this frequency converter (21). In order to increase the availability of the synchronous machine (22), the two static converters (18, 19) of the frequency converter (21) can be selected in two channels so that when one static converter fails due to a fault, the other one generates the link direct voltage (Uzk) required for the direct-current excitation. The rotor of the synchronous machine (22) can be coupled to a gas turbine (28) via a transmission (27).

  • Patent number: 5413478
Abstract: A burner with an electric ignition device, for use in an internal combustion engine, a combustion chamber of a gas turbine set, or for a furnace installation, includes two hollow part-conical bodies that are positioned to form a conical combustion space and are offset so that longitudinally extending, tangential inlet slots are formed to conduct combustion air into the combustion space. Inflow orifices provided at the tangential inlet slots feed fuel to the inflowing combustion air to be mixed and carded into the combustion space. An electric ignition device is positioned so that spark producing ends are positioned at a central vertex region of the combustion space. The position of the ignition device protects the device from excessive thermal loading, and allows the burner to be operated at a higher, more efficient temperature.
