Patents Assigned to Ashland Chemical, Inc.
  • Patent number: 7166649
Abstract: The invention is a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) composition, which is the ultraviolet radiation (UV) cured reaction product of a polyester-polyether-based urethane acrylate, one or more acrylate monomers, and a UV photosensitizer. The polyester-polyether-based urethane acrylate is the reaction product of between about 50 and 90 wt-% of a polyester diol having a molecular weight ranging from about 500 to 3200; between about 10 and 50 wt-% of a polyether polyol having a molecular weight ranging from about 1000 to 6000; between about 1 and 5 wt-% of a hydroxy-functional acrylate; and a polyisocyanate.

  • Patent number: 6359092
Abstract: An aqueous, blush-retardant pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) is made from an aqueous latex emulsion having an average particle size diameter of not substantially above about 100 nm and emulsified in the presence of an emulsifier consisting essentially of: In structure I, R1 is an alkyl, alkenyl, or aralkyl group containing between 6 and 18 carbon atoms, R2 is H or R1, R3 is H or a propenyl group; A is an alkylene group of 2 to 4 carbon atoms, N is an integer ranging from 1 to 200, and M is an alkali metal, an ammonium ion, or an alkanolamine cation. Preferably, the emulsifier is: The preferred aqueous latex emulsion is prepared from a monomer mixture consisting essentially of at least one alkylacrylate having at least 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or its corresponding anhydride, and at least one styrenic monomer, and has a mean particle size diameter of less than or equal to about 100 nm.

  • Patent number: 6342122
Abstract: An solvent-based pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) having improved shear adhesion is composed of an acrylic-based PSA resin, an ethylenically unsaturated polyester, an ultraviolet radiation (UV) photosensitizer, and fugative organic solvent for the acrylic-based PSA resin. The PSA is cured by evaporation of the fugative organic solvent coupled with heat and UV irradiation or UV irradiation alone. Such PSA has improved shear adhesion by dint of the addition of the ethylenically-unsaturated polyester and an ultraviolet radiation (UV) photosensitizer. A method for adhering two substrates using the PSA includes applying the PSA to one or both of substrates. The solvent in the PSA is evaporated from the applied PSA. Finally, the polyester component of the applied PSA is cured by exposure of the applied PSA to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
