Patent number: 8888712Abstract: Objectively identifying an acoustic characteristic of tinnitus of a subject. The subject is exposed to a sound pattern having a background acoustic signal preceding an audible silence. The background acoustic signal has a selected acoustic characteristic. An electrical response of the subject's central nervous system to the exposure to the sound pattern is measured. The measured electrical response has a first portion representing the electrical response of the subject's central nervous system to the background acoustic signal, and a second portion representing the electrical response of the subject's central nervous system to the audible silence in the sound pattern. The first portion of the measured electrical response is compared to the second portion of the measured electrical response and a determination is made as to whether the subject has tinnitus with an acoustic characteristic similar to the selected acoustic characteristic based on the comparison.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 2013Date of Patent: November 18, 2014Assignee: Board of Trustees of Southern Illinois UniversityInventors: Jeremy Turner, James Michael Kinder

Publication number: 20140333998Abstract: A method and apparatus for nanoscopy comprising a salt microlens. The microlens-based nanoscope comprises a conventional microscope, a microlens, and a XYZ piezoelectric stage is shown (SEE FIG. 1A). The microlens is mounted on a Z-stage and can be driven to accomplish the scanning. The specimen is placed above the microlens which is a plano-convex lens. The set up employed for the Salt Microlens for Ultra-high Resolution Imaging (SAMURI) can use a halogen-tungsten lamp with a dominant wavelength at 600 nm. A magnified virtual image of the specimen is obtained when the distance between microlens and specimen is less than the focal length of the microlens. The virtual image can then be magnified by the microscope and captured by eyes or a CCD camera.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 12, 2014Publication date: November 13, 2014Applicant: BOARD OF TRUSTEES, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITYInventors: Punit Kohli, Ramiah Rajasekaran Pradeep, Chuanhong Zhou

Publication number: 20140008469Abstract: This invention refers to innovative water sprays applications to significantly improve coal and quartz dust control around a continuous miner. Significant dust control is achieved through utilizing different types of sprays at locations on the top and sides of the miner chassis to create water curtains or shrouds of water around zones of high dust concentration and zones of high concentration dust transport. This is called “multiple lines of defense” spray system (MLD.) This invention also provides a method of reducing dust around a continuous miner by configuring a spray system, located at the top or sides of the cutter boom, thereby improving control of respirable dust.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 12, 2013Publication date: January 9, 2014Applicant: BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITYInventor: Yoginder P.
