  • Patent number: 6386254
Abstract: A device for encapsulating a monitoring device for a pneumatic tire with an encapsulation material includes an encapsulation body having an encapsulation chamber. The monitoring device has at least a pressure sensor and an antenna. A damming element is carried by the encapsulation body in an adjustable manner such that the damming element contacts the pressure sensor of the monitoring device when the monitoring device is disposed within the encapsulation chamber. The damming element prevents the pressure sensor from being clogged with the encapsulating material when the monitoring device is encapsulated. The antenna of the monitoring device is held in a channel formed in the body when the monitoring device is disposed within the encapsulation chamber. The connection between the antenna and the body holds the monitoring device in a floating disposition in the encapsulation chamber. The damming element is in the form of a tube that also helps carry the monitoring device in the floating disposition.

  • Patent number: 6363986
Abstract: A method for building a run flat pneumatic tire by precoating a thin high strength annular band of material with a layer of rubber to form a rubber/band composite. The rubber coated band composite is at least partially cured and then assembled between a body ply carcass and a tread package in a usual second stage tire building machine. The band can be encased completely with the rubber or the rubber can be applied only to the outside surface, the inside surface or the end edges of the band or any combination thereof.

  • Patent number: 6349587
Abstract: A friction testing machine and method for measuring friction characteristics between a test sample and a friction surface. The machine and method are particularly suited for measuring the coefficient of friction between a rubber specimen or a tread element and different friction surfaces at different sliding velocities, contact pressures and orientations. The machine includes a carriage, a friction surface, a motion device, a sample holder, a variable weight loading device, and a force measurement device. The motion device to cause relative movement between the carriage and the friction surface in forward and reverse directions and the sample holder holds a sample in frictional engagement with the friction surface during this forward and reverse movement. The variable weight loading device loads the sample holder so that a selected load can be applied to the sample in a direction normal to the friction surface.

  • Patent number: 6321808
Abstract: A run flat pneumatic tire includes a thin annular monolithic band embedded in the crown portion of the tire wherein the band has a helical cut extending between opposite band edges. The cut has an arcuate length between 45° and 360° and provides a circumferentially expandable band which enhances molding of the tire by enabling the band to expand during molding to minimize porosity and reduce entrapment of air between the band and tread rubber. Alternately, a pair of helically cut bands are joined by an intervening band of rubber and a reinforcing layer of reinforcing cords in a rubber skim may extend about the outer surface of the expandable band or bands.
