Abstract: Diaryl compounds of formula I ##STR1## wherein Ar represents a ring of the formula ##STR2## in which Y denotes oxygen (O), sulfur (S), vinylene (--CH.dbd.CH--), azomethine (--CH.dbd.N--) or a group of the formula ##STR3## R1, R2 and R3 are identical or different and denote hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 -alkoxyalkyl, aryl, aryl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl or aryloxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl,R4 and R5 are identical or different and denote hydrogen, hydroxyl, halogen, nitro, cyano, trifluoromethyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy which is completely or partly substituted by fluorine, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxycarbonyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 -acyl, amino or mono- or di-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino,R6, R7, R8 and R9 are identical or different and denote hydrogen, hydroxyl, halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, amino, mono- or di-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.
