  • Patent number: 6296061
Abstract: A subsurface valve with a pressure-equalizing mechanism is provided to permit pressure above and below a valve closure member to equalize prior to the opening of the valve closure member. The pressure-equalizing mechanism may be installed, for example, in the valve closure member or in an annular housing in the subsurface valve. The mechanism includes a pilot activator disposed for reciprocal movement within a pilot bore. A flow tube that is disposed for longitudinal movement with a longitudinal bore of the subsurface valve is used to shift the pilot activator within the pilot bore from a closed or sealed position to an open or equalizing position. In the open position, fluid pressure below the valve closure member is allowed to flow through a pilot passageway that establishes fluid communication between the pilot bore and a cylinder within which a pilot piston is moveably disposed.

  • Patent number: 6268672
Abstract: A motor protector for use in protecting an electric motor in a subterranean environment. The motor protector utilizes a dual, flexible bladder system. One of the expandable bladders provides for the expansion and contraction of motor oil. The other expandable bladder contains a supply of neutralizing solution. The bladder filled with neutralizing solution cooperates with the bladder filled with motor oil to maintain the expandable bladder bathed in neutralizing solution. This prevents migration of corrosive agents into the motor oil.

  • Patent number: 6260627
Abstract: A system for pumping high gas-to-liquid ratio well fluids. The system includes a submersible pumping system having a submersible motor and a submersible pump driven by the motor. The system further includes deployment tubing, such as production tubing or coiled tubing, through which wellbore fluid is produced. A bypass is connected into the system to conduct a portion of the wellbore fluid intaken by the submersible pumping system to a position upstream of the pump intake. Because this recirculated fluid has a lower gas-to-liquid ratio and a lower viscosity, its reintroduction into the new wellbore fluid promotes efficiency of pumping and decreased wear on pumping system components.

  • Patent number: 6260626
Abstract: A technique is provided for supplying electrical power to a submersible pumping system in a well completion. The pumping system includes a submersible electric motor, a pump driven by the motor and a separator for separating liquid and gas phase components of the wellbore fluids. The gas phase components are produced through a first passageway in an isolating packer, with liquid phase components being produced through a separate passageway through the packer. A transition assembly, including a connector adapter is provided in either the liquid or gas flow path, and either on the lower or upper side of the packer. The transition assembly incorporates a connector for securing upper and lower cable portions to one another. The lower cable portion extends from the connector to the electric motor, while the upper cable assembly extends from the connector to the earth's surface.

  • Patent number: 6257333
Abstract: A system for separating gas from a wellbore fluid as it is produced to the surface. The system includes a progressing cavity pump, a submergible electric motor and a fluid intake. The submergible electric motor is connected to the progressing cavity pump to drive the pump and draw wellbore fluid through the fluid intake. The fluid intake includes a hollow interior defined by a thick-walled section. Additionally, the fluid intake includes a plurality of fluid passageways extending through the thick-walled section. The passageways are oriented to create a reversal in fluid flow, and thus a release of gas, as the fluid is draw into the fluid intake.

  • Patent number: 6257792
Abstract: The invention is directed to a retaining ring for securing components along a shaft by transferring the compression load between the components, thereby preventing the adjacent components from separating. The retaining ring includes a pair of arcuate interlocking members having a first end, a second end, an inner wall and an outer wall. The outer wall includes a first surface and the inner wall includes a second surface thereby defining a thickness between the first surface and the second surface. The inner wall also includes a third surface thereby defining a thickness between the third surface and the first surface, wherein the thickness between the third surface and the first surface is less than the thickness between the second surface and the first surface. The inner wall also includes a fourth surface joining the second surface and the third surface to define a smooth transition therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6247545
Abstract: The present invention is a self adjusting, volume balanced, single energizer rigid face seal for rolling cutter drill bits with floating journal bearings. Volume balancing is accomplished by utilizing a floating static seal between the rigid face seal ring and the bearing shaft. This floating static seal ring is moved axially within a annular groove by the volume pulses caused by the axial play of the cutter when in operation. At one end of the annular groove the geometry of the rigid seal ring and bearing shaft are set such that the seal assembly achieves volume balance when the bearing is running on its OD. If the bearing is running on its OD, the floating static seal will move from where ever it is in the annular groove by the volume pulses until it reaches the balance volume position.

  • Patent number: 6237693
Abstract: A subsurface well safety valve having a flow tube telescopically movable in a housing for controlling the movement of a valve closure member. A piston and cylinder assembly actuates the flow tube and is in communication with hydraulic control fluid from the well surface on one side and a gas biasing chamber on the second side and includes a spring acting on the flow tube to close the valve. An equalizing system equalizes fluid pressure on opposite sides of the piston and cylinder assembly in the event of a failure in the seal between the piston and cylinder thereby allowing the spring to close the valve. The equalizing system uses fewer components than previous designs and utilizes a new reference chamber design that allows the reference chamber and the piston to be positioned within the same axial length reducing the overall length of the safety valve over previous designs.
