  • Patent number: 6220794
Abstract: A rotary cutting tool for cutting a spherical seat on a surface of a workpiece comprises a body adapted to carry cutting inserts. The body is fixed to a drive shaft which rotates the body about a longitudinal center axis of the body. The body includes a forwardly facing front surface of generally convex shape, and a plurality of insert seats formed in the front surface in circumferentially spaced relationship about the axis. Each of the seats faces forwardly and comprises recesses of generally pyramidal shape. A screw threaded hole extends through each of the seats in a rearward direction and is adapted to receive an insert fastening screw. The cutting inserts include projections of generally pyramidal shape received in respective ones of the recesses. The projections are formed by a first plurality of V-shaped parallel grooves intersected by a second plurality of V-shaped parallel grooves arranged perpendicular to the first groove.

  • Patent number: 5477754
Abstract: A metal cutting insert is made by sintering an insert body and coating the sintered insert body with a conventional coating. Subsequently, a supporting surface of the insert is ground smooth while removing the coating therefrom. The supporting surface of the insert is thereby formed by an uncoated, smoothly ground surface of the sintered body.

  • Patent number: 5176480
Abstract: A broaching insert, such as a slotter or semifinisher, which cuts through a workpiece is configured such that side cutting edges of the broaching insert contact the workpiece simultaneously. If the broaching insert is a slotter, a center portion of the cutting edge which interconnects the side cutting edge makes contact with the workpiece ahead of the side cutting edges. If the insert is a semi-finisher, the side cutting edges are scalloped so as to reduce shock upon engagement with the workpiece. The broaching insert is ideally suited to the cutting of workpieces oriented obliquely relative to the direction of cutting. In order to minimize snap-back of the broaching insert as it exits the workpiece, the broaching insert is sequentially passed through back-up disks of gradually diminishing hardness, whereby the compressive loading on the insert is relieved gradually.

  • Patent number: 5135339
Abstract: A broaching tool includes a holder and a plurality of broaching inserts mounted therein. Spacers are situated between successive pairs of inserts and are formed of a tougher material than the inserts. Each spacer includes a reinforcing web which abuts against a rear surface of its respective leading insert. The reinforcing web extends higher than a lower level of the cutting edge of that respective leading insert, so as to reinforce that insert. The web terminates short of its respective trailing insert, whereby a space is formed between the reinforcing web and the trailing insert for receiving chips formed by the latter.

  • Patent number: 4922591
Abstract: A system and method for storing and selectively transferring cutting tools to a tool holder of a machine tool comprising a bar coder for providing coded labels containing information such as the type of tool and their offsets and affixing the label to the cutting tools. The indexed cutting tools are placed in a tool storage magazine that presents the tools for transfer where a bar code reader scans the labels and selects the needed cutting tool.
