Abstract: A sharps container includes a disposable open topped receptacle having a lid with an elongated opening therethrough and a closure flap pivotally supported adjacent the opening for pivotal movement between positions for opening and closing the opening. The closure flap is self-closing, being biased to the closed position. The disposable receptacle may be supported within a reusable cabinet having upright spaced-apart end walls which extend upwardly above the lid of the receptacle. A handle on the exterior side of at least one wall is coupled to the closure flap for opening and closing the flap in response to turning movement of the handle. The raised container end walls shield the hand of an operator on the handle from sharps being inserted into the container opening.
