Abstract: In a telecommunication system, paging areas may be automatically reconfigured as required. Paging areas can be adaptively reconfigured in accordance with changes in movement traffic of mobile hosts. The system and method work under a constraint that only a limited number of area IDs are permitted for each paging unit area. Also, the system and method work over heterogeneous access networks. Thus, according to the presently disclosed embodiments, paging areas reconfigure themselves according to changes in movement traffic of mobile hosts.

Abstract: A method of estimating QoS for making a handoff trigger decision for a remote terminal in a wireless IP network is disclosed. At least a first and second probing packet is generated with an access router from a plurality of access points. The first and second probing packets are then sent from the access routers over a fixed core network having a plurality of routers to a correspondent access router and then back to the access routers. At least one collector packet is also generated and sent to follow the first and second probing packets to gather at least one predetermined QoS parameter from the routers after the first and second probing packets have left the routers. The QoS parameters are then processed with the access routers to make the handoff trigger decision preferentially along with layer two QoS parameters of the wireless hop.

Abstract: A context-aware search service is provided to users requesting information. The context-aware search incorporates contextual information such as the context of the user making the request, the external context of the user or terminal that the user accesses, or the characteristics or context of the terminal. The contextualized request is processed through sets of analyses to customize the request including analyses to determine an exact nature of the request, analyses to limit a universe of reference to be examined to provide the result, and analyses to select the most appropriate content and format for presentation to the user once the result is obtained from separate service providers.

Abstract: The present invention provides a tunnel-based IP handoff process that can minimize the handoff latency associated with the standard Mobile IP registration. In the present invention, when neighboring nodes are detected, these detected nodes are identified as candidate nodes. Detection of just the existence of neighboring nodes should be possible even in situations where these neighboring nodes use different access technologies. For instance, pilot beacon signals may be taken as indication of the existence of candidate nodes although it may be impossible to compare them quantitatively if the beacon signals emanate from different access technologies. As soon as candidate nodes are identified, tunnels are established between the source node and the candidate nodes. The tunnels are used to forward data to the mobile node after a communication link between the mobile node and the source node goes down.

Abstract: The present invention provides network-layer authentication protocols for authenticating mobile client and access router to each other. The present invention uses Router Discovery as a carrier to implement the authentication protocols. In an embodiment of the present invention, a mobile client sends out a solicitation message to request connectivity service. The solicitation message contains a proof of identity of the mobile client. An access router that receives the solicitation message will not respond to it until the proof of the identity is verified. Only when the proof of identity of the mobile client is verified, will the access router respond and return an advertising message to the mobile client, thereby preventing unauthorized mobile clients from obtaining network access.

Abstract: Networks consist of administrative domains each including an administrative server and at least one mobility agent deployed therein. The mobility agents offer connectivity to a mobile node via Advertisement messages in a form verifiable by the mobile node. Each Advertisement message is signed by a private key of the advertising mobility agent and accompanied by a certificate that contains a public key of the advertising mobility agent and is signed by a private key of the administrative server of the advertising mobility agent. Thus, if the mobile node has the public key of the administrative server, it can authenticate the Advertisement message. If the mobile node does not have the public key, it requests the public key when it registers with the mobility agent. The public key of the administrative server is sent in a certificate signed by the private key of the administrative server ultimately responsible for authentication of the mobile node.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are apparatuses and methods for generating pseudorandom numbers by making the existing ANSI and FIPS PRNGs forward secure and eliminating the need for re-keying them. A forward secure ANSI PRNG is created which includes an enhanced block cipher that is non-invertible even if the key becomes known and a function of the block cipher used in the existing ANSI PRNG. Additionally, the forward secure ANSI PRNG includes an enhanced next state that allows previous states to remain secret even when the key and the current state become known. A forward secure FIPS PRNG is created which includes a computation of an enhanced next state that is noninvertible.

  • Publication number: 20030016655
Abstract: Disclosed is a method applicable to third generation, wireless, mobile access IP-based data networks supporting IETF proposed Mobile IP support standards. The method reduces the end-to-end packet latency, jitter and packet loss that occur when the communication link between a mobile node and the network is handed-off from one local agent or router to another. The method greatly reduces the time necessary to establish a new network data route between the mobile node and a correspondent node during the hand-off from one agent/router to another by predicting the mobility of the mobile node, predetermining when the hand-off will occur, and establishing the new data route in advance of the hand-off.

Abstract: The present invention provides scheduling algorithms that guarantee minimum data transport service for even ATs with poor channel conditions. Data-requesting ATs are divided into a number (Ng1) of AT groups according to their channel conditions. Also, a recurring sequence of time slots is defined on the TDMA channel and partitioned into a number (Ng2) of slot groups, where Ng2 is made larger than Ng1. Generally, slot assignment according to the present invention is a two-step process. First, in the sequence, the slot groups are allocated to the AT groups so that AT groups with better channel conditions will receive more slot groups while each AT group will receive at least one slot group. Second, in each AT group, the time slots allocated to an AT group are assigned to the individual ATs in the group. By assigning more slot groups to AT groups with better channel conditions, the algorithm will optimize the overall data throughput.

Abstract: The present invention provides a transmission control scheme for wireless digital networks comprised of a plurality of access points each communicating with access terminals, which improves data throughput to access terminals located in areas where interference from the neighboring access points are high. Generally, under the transmission control scheme according to the present invention, the access points are controlled so that neighboring access points will not transmit signals simultaneously with transmission parameters providing high robustness. The transmission parameters include, for instance, transmission power, a modulation scheme and a coding rate. Higher power transmission achieves higher robustness. Transmission at a lower modulation level achieves higher robustness. Transmission at a lower coding rate achieves higher robustness.

Abstract: A method for implementing IPsec in third generation and beyond wireless, mobile access, Internet protocol-based digital networks supporting Mobile IP is disclosed. A sending node initiates establishment of a security association for a receiving node, rather than waiting for the receiving node to initiate security association establishment after receiving a packet from the sending node. Thus, the disclosed method greatly reduces packet delay introduced by required authentication and security association establishment processes. The IPsec may use the Kerberos key exchange method. The Kerberos key exchange method, since it requires less computational overhead, is a suitable IPsec method for mobile IP networks where less resourceful devices such as PDAs and cellular phones are primary network access devices. Since the Kerberos key exchange method requires less computational overhead, packet delay associated with authentication and security processes are further reduced.

Abstract: Disclosed are methods for predicting the mobility of mobile nodes in third generation and beyond wireless, mobile access Internet protocol-based data networks embodying IETF Mobile IP support, as well as in wireless LANs. Conventional Mobile IP mobility detection is replaced with deterministic, stochastic, and/or adaptive methods to predict the mobility of a mobile node in the network employing network logic layer (L3) packet latency characteristics. The method is useful for providing pre-notification that a communication hand-off condition is imminent to enable fast route pre-establishment and reduced packet latency, and for optimizing quality of service by facilitating selection of best base station transceiver in overlapping cell environments, among other applications.
