Patent number: 5465672Abstract: An improved wrapped deck pallet assembly is provided which is comprised of an envelope having smooth exterior surfaces and an internal support structure nested within the envelope for enhancing the overall strength of the wrapped deck pallet. In the first embodiment, the envelope has a base, side walls and four flaps, and is formed such that the flutes of the base and the flutes of the flaps are running in a non-parallel angular or perpendicular direction to one another when the envelope is folded. The internal structure includes optional top and bottom flat paperboard decks that sandwich a plurality of blocks to form an internal rigid structure located within the envelope. Preferably the flutes of the top deck will be oriented to extend in a non-parallel angular direction or perpendicular to the flutes of the top flaps of the envelope.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1994Date of Patent: November 14, 1995Assignee: Down River International, Inc.Inventors: George C. Patent number: 5132156Abstract: A void filler (14, 16) especially suited for filling large volumes is made from first and second panels (18, 20), each panel having a core (26) sandwiched between face sheets (22, 24). The core is typically a corrugated honeycomb core so that the panel is stiff, strong and yet lightweight. The panels each have generally horizontal upper and lower edges (30, 32) and generally vertical first and second (34, 36) edges. The panels are connected at a hinge (44) along their upper edges. A limiter (50), attached at or near the lower edges, limits the movement of the lower edges away from one another so the panels can move from a flat, storage condition to a use condition, exhibiting a generally inverted V-shape. Two void fillers can be hingedly connected to form an M-shaped void filler assembly (2).Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 1990Date of Patent: July 21, 1992Assignee: Down River International, Inc.Inventors: Anthony Trassare, Jr., George C. Patent number: 4865889Abstract: A collapsible, open cell void filler (2) is made by stacking a series of paper core sheets (58) and gluing the core sheets to one another at appropriate points (56) to create a generally hexagonal open cell core structure when expanded. The stack (60) of core sheets is cut along a series of cutting planes (62) to create rows of independently expandable hexagonal cells (16). The end cells (20) of each row are connected to one another by an outer sheet (18) to create a core slab (68). When the outer sheets are separated, the rows of cells expand from their collapsed, reduced volume condition to their expanded, increased volume condition. As the cells expand they separate laterally from one another along the cutting planes. This eliminates deformation of the cells and permits the full extension of the rows of cells. Deck sheets (6) can be fastened to the outer sheets so that when the core slab is expanded, the deck sheets lie adjacent the open cell ends (28).Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1988Date of Patent: September 12, 1989Assignee: Down River International Inc.Inventor: George C. Patent number: 4585381Abstract: An expansible honeycomb-type void filler formed of stacked strips secured together at spaced and staggered positions to define cell walls which vary in length to provide vertically aligned shortened stretch-limiting walls which reduce hourglass-type distortion, has suspension means consisting of a supporting top strip of the stack and a suspension structural element, said suspension means also including parts movable in a direction lengthwise of the strips to provide openable cells between the suspension structural element and the supporting top strip of the stack. The void filler is also disclosed as having widened adhesive connections in an upper region, and as being formed of corrugated paperboard which is partially crushed.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1983Date of Patent: April 29, 1986Assignee: Down River International, Inc.Inventor: George C. Patent number: 4516891Abstract: An expansible cellular void filler for dunnage uses is formed of a stack of flat, bendable strips, each except the top and bottom of which is secured at alternating longitudinally spaced positions to an overlying strip and to a subjacent strip, the secured positions being aligned in rows in a direction perpendicular to the planes of the flat strips, the spacing between at least two such rows being less than the spacing between other rows, so that when the strips are moved apart and bend to form cells, the cell sidewalls formed by the portions of the strips which extend between said two rows move toward a straight planar relationship prior to the sidewalls of other cells, and limit the expansion of the filler.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1982Date of Patent: May 14, 1985Assignee: Down River International, Inc.Inventors: Paul A. Patent number: 4431405Abstract: Pollution control apparatus and method are disclosed in which hot exhaust gas containing pollutants including solid particles and hydrocarbon vapors is treated by transmitting such exhaust gas through a container containing wood members, such as wood chips, which serve as a filter media for filtering out such pollutants by causing such solids to deposit and such hydrocarbon vapors to condense upon the surface of the wood members. The contaminated wood chips are discharged from the filter and further processed into chip board or other commercial wood products thereby disposing of the pollutants. Lumber may be used as the wood members of the filter in a lumber kiln by deposition of solid particles on the rough surface of such lumber. The contaminated surfaces of the lumber are removed by a planer which produces smooth finished lumber and contaminated wood chips that may be processed into chip board or other commercial wood products.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1982Date of Patent: February 14, 1984Assignee: Down River International, Inc.Inventor: J. Patent number: 4424753Abstract: A pallet of composite construction comprising top and bottom panels of corrugated paperboard, at least two runners of stacked corrugated paperboard disposed on end between the panels, and at least two wooden stringers residing in notches in the runners and extending transversely of the runners. The runners and the stringers form a grid for supporting the top panel. Alternative constructions of the invention are described in detail in the specification.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1982Date of Patent: January 10, 1984Assignee: Down River International, Inc.Inventor: John R. Patent number: 4247237Abstract: A free standing cargo spacer which is adapted to be assembled in situ from a honeycomb body and an initially flat panel. The honeycomb body is shipped collapsed and is expanded during assembly. The panel is bent during assembly to extend partially around the expanded honeycomb, and is interengaged therewith by means of interfittable tabs and slots to support and maintain the expanded form of the honeycomb and hold the panel in bent form.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1979Date of Patent: January 27, 1981Assignee: Down River International, Inc.Inventor: Ronald L.
