Abstract: &agr;-Hydroxycarbonyl compounds are obtained from aldehydes or ketones by forming an acetal or ketal which is decomposed to a vinyl ether. The ether is selectively oxidized under conditions yielding an &agr;-hydroxy-aldehyde or &agr;-hydroxy-ketone with the carbonyl group protected. The last-mentioned compounds are valuable sources for other functional organic molecules, for example lactic acid.

c) recovering a branched olefin polymer.

Abstract: The disclosed invention relates to a polymerization process comprising contacting ethylene, and optionally, one or more olefinically unsaturated comonomers, with an active supported Group 3, 4, 5, or 6 metallocene catalyst system having an unsubstituted or substituted fused-ring cyclopentadienyl ligand, preferably indenyl or fluorenyl, and a substituted or unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl ligand under gas-phase or slurry polymerization conditions. The process is suitable for the production of high-density polyethylene homopolymers and copolymers. The benefits to industrial practice are both the ease of preparation and low-cost of the precursor metallocene compound and the commercially feasible polymerization activity levels in stable, low fouling level reactor conditions surprisingly associated with it. Additionally, the polymers made under the invention process conditions have narrow molecular weight distributions, low MI, and low values for MIR.
Abstract: A process for obtaining a substantial amount of olefinic products from a residual feedstock by use of a vapor short contact time conversion process unit comprised of a bed of fluidized heat transfer solids. The vapor short contact time process unit is operated at conditions which includes steam dilution to reduce partial pressure of hydrocarbon vapors and a vapor residence time less than about 0.5 seconds.

Abstract: A process for converting hydrocarbons by contacting a hydrocarbon feedstream under hydrocarbon conversion conditions with a large crystal zeolite catalyst. The large crystal zeolite of the catalyst used in the hydrocarbon conversion process is made by heating an aqueous zeolite synthesis mixture under agitation to a temperature equal to or less than the effective nucleation temperature of the synthesis mixture. After this step, the aqueous synthesis mixture is heated in the absence of agitation to a temperature equal to or greater than the effective nucleation temperature of the aqueous zeolite synthesis mixture. The process finds particular application in hydrocarbon conversion processes where reduced non-selective acidity is important for reaction selectivity and/or the maintenance of catalyst activity, e.g., toluene disproportionation, dealkylation, alkylation, and transalkylation.
