Abstract: A method of allocating resources in a first wireless system, wherein the first wireless system shares a frequency spectrum with a second wireless system, is described. The method comprises detecting a level of interference to the second wireless system caused by the first wireless system on a first frequency within the spectrum; determining if transmission on the first frequency should be restricted based on the level of interference; and restricting transmissions in the first system on the first frequency if it was determined that transmission on the first frequency should be restricted while allowing normal use of the remaining portions of the frequency spectrum to continue in the first system. A system for allocating resources in a first wireless system, wherein the first wireless system shares a frequency spectrum with a second wireless system, is also described.

  • Publication number: 20180376342
Abstract: Improved techniques are provided for managing and optimizing network resources and spectrum access in a Self-Organizing Network (SON). A Spectrum Access System (SAS) collects network-related information from a plurality of network sources, such as base stations and user equipments (UEs), to perform optimization and organization across different networks, network operators, and network technologies. In some embodiments, the SAS may use the network information and a Radio Environment Map to optimize TDD synchronization in the SON. In other embodiments, the SAS may use the network information to populate a global Neighbor Relation Table. The SAS also may use the network information to optimize one or more network parameters, such as Physical Cell Identities or Root Sequence Indexes, antenna parameters, transmit power levels, handover thresholds, channel assignments, and so on, for use in the SON.

  • Publication number: 20180376345
Abstract: Embodiments assign shared spectrum resources to access points. Embodiments group the access points into coexistence groups of access points, and generate a vertex graph including vertices that each represent one of the coexistence groups, where an edge connecting a pair of vertices in the vertex graph represents an overlap between coverage contours of a pair of coexistence groups represented by the pair of vertices, and the edge is assigned a weight that is proportional to the overlap as compared to other overlaps between coverage contours of other pairs of coexistence groups. Embodiments generate at least one vertex-colored graph by assigning a color to each vertex in the vertex graph, group the coexistence groups into groups of coexistence groups based on their corresponding assigned colors in the at least one vertex-colored graph, and map shared spectrum transmit frequencies to the groups of coexistence groups.

  • Publication number: 20180352442
Abstract: A method and system is provided for enabling spectrum sensing capability in a network having at least one primary user and a plurality of secondary users configured to communicate using a shared spectrum. The methods and systems include receiving values from sensors corresponding to received signal strength from a primary user in one or more frequencies of the shared spectrum. The values are used to interpolate at least one additional value between the sensors. A detection threshold is determined for sensing a signal transmitted from the primary user based on an acceptable amount of interference. The primary user is then determined to be transmitting in the one or more frequencies of the shared spectrum if any of the values received from the plurality of sensors or the at least one additional value interpolated along the path exceeds the detection threshold.

  • Patent number: 10133987
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for categorizing signals sensed from receivers into one of a plurality of categories using a machine learning component that obfuscates other characteristics of the signals beyond the categorization of the signal. A set of training signals is generated that includes signals representative of each of a plurality of categories of signals. A machine learning component is trained using the set of training signals so that the machine learning technique can categorize new signals into one of the plurality of categories. The machine learning component is transmitted to one or more receivers so that each receiver can categorize sensed signals into one of the plurality of categories using the machine learning component while obfuscating other characteristics of the sensed signals.

  • Patent number: 10128898
Abstract: An improved technique for detecting the presence or absence of one or more predetermined signals in a shared spectrum. In accordance with the disclosed embodiments, a received RF signal may be down-converted to a baseband signal, which is subsequently processed by a spectrum sensor to detect the presence or absence of a predetermined signal, such as a predetermined radar signal. The spectrum sensor may transform the baseband signal to the frequency domain, for example using a fast Fourier transform, to generate a corresponding set of frequency components. The spectrum sensor multiplies the frequency components of the baseband signal with the frequency response of a matched filter having a set of coefficients corresponding to the predetermined signal. The spectrum sensor may convert the matched-filter output signal to the time domain, for example using an inverse fast Fourier transform, and then may determine a value indicative of the signal power that it compares with a known threshold value.

  • Patent number: 10020900
Abstract: An improved system architecture for making spectrum information available to one or more devices and for providing and using the spectrum information at a device. The improved architecture employs an arrangement of software processes that interact to provide a flexible and highly-configurable technique for controlling access to spectrum information. To that end, a spectrum information server executes a server process having a library of spectrum-related functions including, for example, functions for retrieving spectrum data from spectrum data sources and/or for processing retrieved spectrum data. The spectrum information server also executes one or more device host processes configured to communicate with at least one compatible device process executing on a spectrum-aware (SA) device. In an illustrative embodiment, a device process on the SA device may request spectrum information from a device host process on the spectrum information server.

  • Patent number: 9544778
Abstract: Described herein are systems and methods for sharing public safety network resources between public safety devices and commercial devices. A request for network resources is received from a commercial device for an application running on the commercial device. It is determined that the request is for a first type of traffic that is tolerant to time delays caused by resource fluctuations. Resources are allocated from a public safety network instead of resources from a commercial network, so that the commercial device can use resources from the public safety network.
