  • Patent number: 5804278
Abstract: A composite panel construction suitable for use in furniture, and particularly for uses such as table, desk and cabinet tops includes, in a first embodiment, a single honeycomb layer sandwiched between a pair of plywood layers, with the honeycomb layer preferably made of polystyrene or a similar polymeric material. In a second embodiment, a composite panel includes a single plywood core with upper and lower honeycomb layers attached above and below the single plywood core. The plywood layers in both embodiments provide resistance to screw pull-out such that screws can be threaded into the panel from any desired position on the bottom of the panel and the exposed edges of the plywood layer(s) provide adequate surfaces for the attachment of decorative edging material to the panel.

  • Patent number: 5749628
Abstract: A vertically adjustable chair arm with a rotatable armrest includes an armrest support member extending upwardly from a chair seat and an armrest housing telescoped onto the support member. An armrest pad member is pivotally connected to a top end of the housing. A manually operated ratchet mechanism is engaged between the housing and the support member to releasably retain the housing in a selected vertical position on the support member. A spring ball detent mechanism is engaged between the armrest pad member and the housing and releasably retains the pad member in a selected pivotal position relative to the housing.

  • Patent number: 5191676
Abstract: A spherical glide securable to a structural leg comprising a first substantially hemispherical half and a second substantially hemispherical half secured together by cooperating interference means on the first half and the second half and further including means for securing the spherical glide to the leg. The cooperating interference means may comprise a circumferential wall extending from a frist half and receivable by re-entrant fit within a recess in the second half.

  • Patent number: 4676553
Abstract: A chair and a method of constructing same are provided. The chair includes two rear frame members manufactured from tubing having a rhomboidal cross-section. Appropriate placement of two bends in the tubing forms frame members which readily control an angle between a back of the chair and rear legs of the chair. The chair back has a ventilation space therein for comfort. The front legs of the chair are also rhomboidal and the rhomboidal sections of the front and rear legs are rotationally oriented generally at right angles to one another, for rigidity.

  • Patent number: 4657302
Abstract: A lounge construction is disclosed for grouping a plurality of furniture units, such as chairs, together. The chairs or other furniture units have frames supported by a plurality of generally vertical leg posts, which extend laterally of either side of the frame. A central lounge frame is included for connecting two furniture units, and the lounge frame is adapted to receive one of several types of furniture pieces, including a table top or chair seat and back. The central lounge frame has a support structure with front and rear transverse members connected by a crossbrace. A socket is attached at each end of the respective transverse members, and each socket receives an upper end of one of the leg posts whereby the central frame shares the inner legs of the neighboring furniture units. Each of the sockets has a slot therein which is aligned with a transverse support member of the furniture unit when the central frame is in place.

  • Patent number: 4639042
Abstract: A chair back arrangement is provided for use on stackable chairs utilized in convention centers, assembly halls, banquet halls and the like. The chair back includes a large ventilation space centrally located in a upper back portion of the chair. Preferably, the ventilation space is provided by utilizing two, independently mounted, laterally spaced back panels to form the chair back. In the preferred embodiment, each chair back panel is generally trapezoidally shaped and is supported on three sides by an appropriately bent tubular member. The chair back comprises two such tubular members which are integral with rear legs of the chair. It is shown that appropriate tubular material can be selected to provide a preferred flexing of the chair back panels.

  • Patent number: 4632458
Abstract: A chair back height adjustment mechanism for a chair having a chair back supporting standard and a chair back bracket with a chair back or backrest mounted thereon includes a rack gear on the chair back standard, a pinion gear supported in a bearing on the chair back bracket, a worm gear coaxial with the pinion gear, and worm threads on a dial shaft supported on the bracket. Rotation of the dial causes the worm member to rotate the worm gear and the pinion gear whereby the bracket supporting the pinion gear is translated in relation to the chair back standard. The chair back can only be adjusted by operation of the dial due to the nature of the worm and worm gear combination, thus preventing changes in the adjusted position of the chair back by contact with the chair back.

  • Patent number: 4062590
Abstract: A chair structure comprising a one-piece, loop-shaped tubular frame having a pair of leg structures depending from and supporting the frame. A mesh body support member including a back and seat portion having a plurality of relatively closely interwoven metallic strands, with the strand ends at side and end marginal portions securely connected to the frame. The support member is formed of resiliently flexible mesh material whereby the same elastically yields to the weight of a user, such that the chair back and seat has a small curvature and an attractive appearance and yields tending to conform comfortably to the seated shape of the user.

  • Patent number: 3990741
Abstract: A tandem structure including chairs and the like formed of modular assemblies each comprising a generally horizontal load supporting member, such as a chair seat portion, table top, or the like, mounted in a fastening structure connected to an upper portion of a leg member which has a base portion engageable with a support surface or floor. The modular assemblies are each connected to another for cooperative support by elongated connection members which extend therebetween and each beam member has opposite end portions thereof removably secured to the fastening structure of the respective modular assembly.
