Abstract: Provided is a pterygium animal model produced by injecting human-derived pterygial epithelial cells that are isolated and cultured in vitro. The animal model has characteristics similar to those of pterygium, which are observed only in humans, wherein such characteristics are caused in such a way that pterygial epithelial cells are isolated from human pterygium corneal tissues and cultured, the cultured pterygial epithelial cells are sub-cultured, and human-derived pterygial epithelial cells of which identify is confirmed are injected into the nasal subconjunctival space of mice. The pterygium animal model allows a pterygium therapeutic agent to be effectively screened.

Abstract: This invention relates, e.g., to a composition that, at room temperature, when contacted with a sample comprising phosphoproteins, can fix and stabilize cellular phosphoproteins, preserve cellular morphology, and allow the sample to be frozen to generate a cryostat frozen section suitable for molecular analysis. The composition comprises (1) a fixative that stabilizes the proteins in the sample and that has a sufficient water content for a stabilizer and/or a permeability enhancing agent to be soluble therein; (2) a stabilizer, comprising (a) a kinase inhibitor and (b) a phosphatase inhibitor and, optionally, (c) a protease (e.g., proteinase) inhibitor; (3) a permeability enhancing agent; and (4) lactic acid. Methods and kits are described for preserving phosphoproteins, using such a composition. Also described are endogenous surrogate markers for monitoring protein degradation, including the loss of posttranslational modifications (such as phosphorylation), e.g.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a semiconductor wafer includes a carbon layer formation step, a through hole formation step, a feed layer formation step, and an epitaxial layer formation step. In the carbon layer formation step, a carbon layer (71) is formed on a surface of a substrate (70) made of polycrystalline SiC. In the through hole formation step, through holes (71c) are formed in the carbon layer (71) formed on the substrate (70). In the feed layer formation step, a Si layer (72) and a 3C—SiC polycrystalline layer (73) are formed on a surface of the carbon layer (71). In the epitaxial layer formation step, the substrate (70) is heated so that a seed crystal made of 4H—SiC single crystal is formed on portions of the surface of the substrate (70) that are exposed through the through holes (71c), and a close-spaced liquid-phase epitaxial growth of the seed crystal is caused to form a 4H—SiC single crystal layer.
