Abstract: A chemiresistive vapor sensor compound for detecting target vapors can comprise a perylene-tetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI) core according to structure (I): where R can be a morphology control group or -A?-D?, A and A? can be independently a linking group, D and D? can be independently a strong electron donor which transfers electrons to the PTCDI core sufficient to form an anionic PTCDI radical of the PTCDI core, and R1 to R8 can be independently a side group. A chemiresistive vapor sensor for detection of a target compound can comprise an assembly of nanofibers formed of the chemiresistive sensor compound and a pair of electrodes operatively oriented about the assembly of nanofibers to allow electrical current to pass from a first electrode in the pair of electrodes through the assembly of nanofibers and to a second electrode in the pair of electrodes.
Abstract: Disclosed herein are cell culture analog devices, systems and methods for applying stimuli to components containing different cell types and recording the cell responses before, during, and after a stimulus (for example, a drug, metabolite, toxin, or electrical stimulus) is introduced. Responses can be stored to a database and compared to previous results. By analyzing how each cell type responds to various stimulation parameters, for example, by using multivariate analyses, cell signaling pathway information can be determined or new pathways can be discovered. In some implementations, an individual component interfaces with a specific cell type. This facilitates readout of the cell response to the stimulation. Various components can also interface with each other, such that the behavior of one cell type can affect a cell type in another component. Once assembled, the system is plugged into readout electronics and a programmable electrical stimulator.

Abstract: The effects of hepcidin treatment on mitigating ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) and acute kidney injury (AKI) by decreasing iron availability and ROS-mediated cell death were tested. Wild type (WT) C57Bl/6 and hepcidin knock out (Hamp?/?) mice were treated with saline or 50 ?g of hepcidin i.p. prior to bilateral renal IRI. Renal function, injury markers, histopathology, and inflammation were examined after 24 hours of reperfusion. In WT mice, IRI induced increases in serum and kidney non-theme iron levels, but hepcidin treatment induced sequestration of iron in the spleen and liver and prevented IRI-associated increases in serum and kidney non-heme iron. Kidney function was significantly better in hepcidin-treated mice, accompanied by less acute tubular necrosis and reduced infiltration of immune cells. Hepcidin treatment decreased kidney ferroportin expression and induced the expression of cytoprotectant, H-Ferritin, and was associated with less ROS and tubular epithelial apoptosis.

Abstract: An integrated dual-modality microfluidic sensor chip and methods for using the same. In one form, the sensor comprises a patterned periodic array of nanoposts coated with a noble metal and graphene oxide (GO) to detect target biomarker molecules in a limited sample volume. The device generates both electrochemical and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) signals from a single sensing area of the metal-GO nanoposts. The metal-GO nanoposts are functionalized with specific receptor molecules, serving as a spatially well-defined nanostructured working electrode for electrochemical sensing, as well as a nanostructured plasmonic crystal for SPR-based sensing via the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons.

Abstract: A three-axis magnetic sensor which is not physically separated from each other and made of one element is provided. A spin-orbit torque is generated through an interface junction between a magnetization seed layer and a magnetization free layer, and through this, a change in an in-plane magnetic field may be sensed in the form of current or voltage in the magnetization seed layer. Further, a tunneling insulating layer and a magnetization pinned layer are formed on the magnetization free layer. The formed structure induces a tunnel magneto-resistance phenomenon. Through this, a change in a magnetic field in a vertical direction is sensed.
