  • Patent number: 7814810
Abstract: A shifter includes an actuator incorporating a shape memory alloy wire to control movement of lever-position-controlling components of a vehicle transmission shift lever. In one arrangement, the actuator controls movement of a cam to prevent moving a pawl out of park position until predetermined vehicle conditions are met. Alternatively, the actuator can be directly attached to the pawl itself for controlling movement of the pawl, or connected to a toggle linkage arrangement for controlling movement of the pawl. In still another arrangement, a magnet arrangement is used to motivate a pawl-blocking member. When necessary, a mechanical fuse is operably connected to the system to prevent damage to the shape memory alloy wire where there is risk of the pawl being frictionally stopped from movement despite the contraction of the shape memory alloy wire actuator.

  • Patent number: 7779715
Abstract: A shifter includes an actuator, such as a shape memory alloy wire, to control movement of a set of strategically placed magnets on lever-position-controlling components of a vehicle transmission shift lever. In one arrangement, the actuator controls movement of a carrier carrying one or more of the magnets, the magnets controlling a position of a blocking member to prevent moving a pawl out of park position until predetermined vehicle conditions are met. Alternatively, the magnets can be carried by a cam, or slide, or wheel.

  • Patent number: 6817262
Abstract: An interlock device includes a housing and a toggle interlock mechanism with an extendable interlock pin. The interlock device also includes a preassembled switch, an electromechanical device, and a lead frame interconnecting the switch and electromechanical device. The lead frame conductors are formed as one piece, but are separated after assembly into the housing. The conductors and mating components include mating non-releasable contacts that telescope together in a manner that forms a robust assembly and that facilitates automation of the assembly process. A method related to the above is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6619155
Abstract: A pedal-supporting apparatus includes a bracket support configured to pivotally support a brake pedal subassembly and an accelerator pedal subassembly. The brake pedal subassembly includes an upper section, a lower section, and an adjustment mechanism adjustably connecting the two sections. The adjustment mechanism includes a track defining a channel, and a follower having a flange-supported bearing shoe that slidably engages the channel. The bearing shoe includes partially-compressed resilient portions and crush ribs that provide a consistent and stable connection that takes up slack to prevent a sloppy connection, but also that facilitates manufacture and assembly of the arrangement.

  • Patent number: 6612194
Abstract: A shifter includes a base and a driver interface module, such as a lever or knob, having a structural member attached to the base and held in a fixed position so that a handle on the structural member can be grasped and loaded by a vehicle operator. At least one load-measuring sensor, such as a strain gage, is attached to the structural member. The sensor outputs an analog signal in proportion to the load applied to the structural member by the vehicle operator. A circuit is connected to the load-measuring sensor for receiving the analog signal. The circuit is configured and programmed to output a transmission-shift control signal when the shift request signal reaches a predetermined minimum load value.

  • Patent number: 6581491
Abstract: A pedal construction includes an adjustable pedal subassembly having a lower pedal member adjustably supported on an upper pedal member by an adjustment device. The lower pedal member includes a pedal lever and a lever mount including abutting mounting sections forming a fixed joint. The mounting section of the lever mount has a channel with sharp edges and the mounting section of the lever has a ridge interference fit into the channel. The sharp edges shave marginal material from sides of the ridge when the ridge is forced into the channel, but the ridge has depressions adjacent its bottom that receive the shaved marginal material when the ridge is forced into the channel. Fasteners extend through the ridge and channel to hold the assembly together, with the ridge and channel interface forming a primary mechanical structure providing torsional strength to the joint.

  • Patent number: 6568294
Abstract: A shifter includes a base and a shift lever pivoted to the base for movement along a single planar shift path. The single planar shift path includes a first portion having P, R, N, and D (i.e. an automatic-shift mode) and a second portion with 4, 3, 2, and 1 (i.e. a manual shift mode). A switch on the shift lever operates a solenoid for changing between an automatic shift mode where the first portion is operable, and a manual shift mode where the second portion is operable. A shift lever position indicator indicates a position of the shift lever in all its positions. The shift lever position indicator includes first and second polarized screens and a first and second polarized light sources arranged to selectively illuminate the first and second indicia when the shift lever is in the automatic or manual shift mode.

  • Patent number: 6564661
Abstract: A shifter apparatus includes a driver interface module (DIM) movable to request a transmission shift, and a display with indicia for showing the presently selected gear position and for showing a newly selected gear position. A controller is operably coupled to the driver interface module, the display, and sensors for sensing predetermined vehicle conditions. The controller shifts the transmission and changes the display if the vehicle sensors indicate that the predetermined vehicle conditions are met, but doesn't shift the transmission if the predetermined vehicle conditions are not met and further it resets the display to the first indicia. By this arrangement, the shifter senses and shifts based on relative position of the DIM and not absolute position. The shifter is storable and covers can be used to hide it when in the storage position.

  • Patent number: 6295887
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for shifting a vehicle transmission. The apparatus includes a miniaturized shifter having a base and having an elongated shift lever subassembly rotatably mounted on the base for movement between a plurality of gear positions. The shift lever subassembly is rotatable about an axis of rotation that extends parallel a length of the shift lever subassembly. A detent device includes an irregular surface defining gear positions on the base, and further includes a pawl on the shift lever subassembly that operably engages the irregular surface to prevent undesired rotational movement of the shift lever subassembly between at least some of the gear positions until the pawl is disengaged from the irregular surface. • Patent number: 5992264
Abstract: An apparatus includes a base, a park brake mechanism and a shift lever both operably attached to the base, and a console configured to cover the components. The components are designed to minimize parts and pieces, including minimizing time required for subassembly together as a unit and minimizing time required for assembly into vehicles. The park brake mechanism includes a quick-attachment structure for drop-in attachment to a spanning bracket for operably engaging wheel park brake cables in the vehicle to the park brake mechanism. The arrangement provides a balanced pulling force, despite unequal lengths of the park brake cables. Further, the shifter includes a shift lever adapted to shift a manual transmission, but constructed to minimize transmission of vibration from the vehicle to the shift lever during operation of the vehicle.
