    Abstract: A circuit for starting and operating a discharge lamp, such as a compact fluorescent lamp, at high frequency from a 60 Hz AC supply. The circuit includes a DC power supply coupled to a pair of AC input terminals for generating a DC voltage. An oscillator coupled to the DC power supply includes a pair of semiconductor transistors and a drive transformer having a primary winding and at least one secondary winding. A load coupled to the output of the oscillator comprises a series combination of the primary winding of the drive transformer and a tank circuit including a tank inductor and a tank capacitor. Suitable means for connecting a discharge lamp in parallel with the tank capacitor is provided. An oscillator sensing and controlling circuit responsive to various lamp failure modes is coupled to the secondary winding of the transformer and reduces the output of the oscillator after a predetermined time delay by shunting the base of either one of the semiconductor switches of the oscillator.

A minimal linkage is formed that is accessible from the top of the headlamp module by the length of the screw driver. The adjustment linkage is water sealed to accommodate rotation and pivoting of the linkage.

The filament supports are attached to opposite ends of the filament for accurately centering the filament within the lamp envelope. The filament supports are particularly useful in a tubular incandescent lamp capsule having an infrared reflective coating on its outer surface.

    Abstract: A method for manufacturing a lamp including a glass envelope having a base fitted at each end portion thereof. Each lamp base includes a metallic base shell having an annular flange. The annular flange is heated prior to fitting over the end portion of the envelope so as to increase the inner flange diameter. Cooling of the annular flange after fitting reduces the flange diameter thereby providing an interference fit with the end portion. The lamp base is retained on the end portion without the need for basing cement. In order to accommodate variations in the diameter of the lamp seals, an annular rib is formed on the inner surface of the flange. After cooling, the annular rib forms an interference fit with the lamp end portion.

    Abstract: An electric lamp assembly includes a sealed lamp envelope, a lamp capsule located within the lamp envelope, a cylindrical, light-transmissive shroud surrounding the lamp capsule, and a mounting arrangement for supporting the lamp capsule and the shroud within the lamp envelope. The mounting arrangement includes one or two supports rods parallel to the axis of the shroud and first and second clips for retaining the shroud and the lamp capsule. The clips prevent both axial and lateral movement of the shroud. The clips are attached to the support rods, typically by welding. In a preferred embodiment, a single clip at each end of the shroud retains both the shroud and the lamp capsule, and requires only a single weld to the support rod.

In one embodiment, the frequency selective impedance modifier circuit substantially eliminates the third harmonic component of the fundamental frequency of the operating current.

    Abstract: A mercury vapor discharge lamp such as a negative glow discharge lamp includes a light-transmitting envelope containing a noble gas fill material. An anode electrode and a cathode electrode are spacedly located within the envelope. An amalgam-forming material for regulating the mercury vapor pressure of the lamp is disposed within the envelope. In order to increase the mercury vapor pressure and consequently the light output of the lamp at low ambient temperatures, a heating element is disposed within the envelope and in close thermal proximity to the amalgam-forming material. A thermostatic switch coupled to the heating element is activated when the temperature adjacent the amalgam-forming material is below a predetermined temperature.
