  • Patent number: 4200604
Abstract: In the formation of cylindrically shaped heat regenerators from ceramic honeycomb structures for use in gas turbine engines, a gas-impervious seal of the peripheral honeycomb cells and a high strength outer ring are formed simultaneously in an apparatus which provides for surrounding the outer wall of the honeycomb structure with a castable ceramic composition suitable for forming the outer ring, contacting a peripheral area of the upper surface of the honeycomb structure defining a predetermined number of peripheral cell openings with a (different) ceramic slurry composition, evacuating the honeycomb cells whose openings are contacted with the slurry composition through corresponding openings in the lower surface of the honeycomb structure in order to promote flow of the slurry into the evacuated cells, thereby forming a gas impervious seal of these peripheral cells, while simultaneously vibrating the honeycomb structure and castable composition in order to promote flow and intimate contact of the castable c

  • Patent number: 4200901
Abstract: A photoflash lamp array comprising a plurality of high-voltage type flashlamps mounted on a printed circuit board containing circuitry for sequentially igniting the flashlamps in response to successive high-voltage firing pulses applied thereto. Each of the flashlamps has a pair of lead-in wires connected to the circuit board by eyelets which project through to the opposite side of the board, one lead of each lamp being connected via its respective eyelet to a common circuit conductor. Electrostatic protection is provided by a conductive shield of planar configuration disposed parallel to the circuit board and spaced therefrom on the side opposite that on which the lamps are disposed. Selected ones of the common circuit connected eyelets project from the back of the circuit board in a manner which maintains the spacing between the shield and circuit board, to prevent short circuiting of leads, and facilitates electrical connection of the planar shield to the common circuit conductor.

  • Patent number: 4199735
Abstract: Thermal lensing effects in a conductively cooled optically pumped laser rod are compensated by limiting the width of thermal contact between the rod surface and its supporting heat sink to an arc width of 70.degree. to 80.degree. and utilizing a simple cylindrical laser cavity mirror or mirrors. This limited heat sink contact produces nearly parallel isotherms in the rod which react with the laser beam so that it may be readily focused by a cylindrical beam focusing means in the laser optical resonator.

  • Patent number: 4199710
Abstract: An electronic ballast circuit includes a directly driven high frequency inverter circuit with a series resonant output circuit coupled to a load circuit having a high intensity discharge (HID) lamp and to a drive circuit dependent upon current flow in the load circuit. A starting circuit for the high frequency inverter is coupled to a DC source and to a charge storage and isolating circuit and provides initial energization to the high frequency inverter circuit. Also, a lamp starting circuit initiates increased conductivity of the high frequency inverter circuit which causes development of energy sufficient to "fire" an HID lamp whereupon a disablement circuit essentially removes the lamp starting circuit from the operational circuitry.

  • Patent number: 4195264
Abstract: Digital noise detection circuit for detecting the presence of noise in digital diphase data and for producing an alarm signal in response to the detection of such noise. The digital diphase data is applied to circuitry from which a clock signal is extracted and processed to derive a first input signal at a first input of an alarm NAND logic gate. The clock signal is also employed by a digital phase lock loop circuit to produce a second signal at a second input of the alarm NAND logic gate which, in the absence of noise corrupting or otherwise affecting the diphase data, is out of phase with the signal at the first input of the alarm NAND logic gate. As a result, no alarm signal is produced by the alarm NAND logic gate.

  • Patent number: 4191947
Abstract: An intrusion alarm system and method is provided which includes one or more sound pulse transmitters that are triggered upon the opening of an entryway, such as a door or window, to produce a high-intensity sound pulse having a decibel level above a predetermined minimum. For example, each transmitter may comprise a percussive photoflash unit in combination with a pyrotechnic device which responds to the radiant output of the fired photoflash unit to emit the intense sound pulse. A centralized detector responds to the sound pulse above a predetermined threshold level to produce an alarm signal. Preferably, the detector comprises an electroacoustical transducer arrangement which provides the dual functions of both sound pulse detection and generation of an audible alarm.
