Publication number: 20100199991Abstract: A ventilatory support and resuscitation device for providing short-term ventilatory support, as well as constant flow, pressure cycled ventilatory support for breathing and non-breathing patients is disclosed. The device includes a chamber and at least one port in flow communication with the chamber. The apparatus also includes a flexible diaphragm member positioned within the chamber and configured to seal the port from flow communication with the chamber while seated adjacent to the port, and to flex in response to pressure applied thereto so as to allow flow communication between the port and the chamber while the diaphragm is flexing. A flow restrictor in flow communication with the chamber may also be included. The device may be coupled to a patient adapter, whereby a manometer, entrainment unit, and safety pop-off and entrainment valve may be coupled thereto.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 5, 2010Publication date: August 12, 2010Applicant: HARTWELL MEDICAL CORPORATIONInventor: Michael J. Patent number: 5765243Abstract: A scoop type patient carrier having separable halves to facilitate placement of the halves beneath a patient, and configured to enable radiographic examination. The joint between the halves, and the points where the pivot and latch mechanisms are located, are laterally offset from the midline or longitudinal centerline of the assembled carrier. This arrangement results in the absence of any joint or line of separation in the upper and lower sections that are aligned with the carrier centerline, and which support the head and feet. This enables the carrier halves to be joined or separated without any accompanying movement of the head and feet of the patient.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1997Date of Patent: June 16, 1998Assignee: Hartwell Medical CorporationInventors: Matthew F. Duncan, Gary R. Williams, Steven A. Badolato

Patent number: 5154185Abstract: An air evacuable support comprising an elongated, airtight and flexible casing partially filled with a plurality of beads which are conformable to a person's body contours. The support can be formed into a seat configuration for placement upon a wheelchair or the like. Apertured baffles located within the casing slow the resulting downward movement of the beads, but also enable the beads to be forcibly moved through them by an attendant for proper bead concentration in areas needing greater rigidity or support. Such rigidity is developed upon evacuation of air from the casing. The seated person is cradled and closely supported by the compacted beads.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1990Date of Patent: October 13, 1992Assignee: Hartwell Medical CorporationInventors: Elizabeth M. Latimer, Hy H. Zornes

Patent number: 5121756Abstract: A vacuum immobilizer support is disclosed which includes an elongated, flexible casing having neck, thoracic and pelvic regions. An evacuation valve is provided to allow the casing to be converted from a flexible state to an evacuated state. Stiffener sections are provided in the casing to prevent transverse bending of the casing in the neck, thoracic and pelvic regions. The stiffener sections allow transverse bending along an axis between the thoracic and pelvic regions. An intermediate stiffener section is provided to prevent longitudinal shortening of the casing between upper and lower stiffener sections. Discrete elements are disposed within the casing and allow the casing to conform to a patient when in its flexible state and to be rigidly fixed when in its evacuated state.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1990Date of Patent: June 16, 1992Assignee: Hartwell Medical CorporationInventor: Michael J. Koledin
