Patent number: 7894069Abstract: An end-of-service life indicator for a sorbent filter includes a tube containing a noble metal nanoparticle film on an optically transparent substrate, the substrate being perpendicular to the axis of the tube. An opening in the tube adjacent to the film allows chemical vapor to accumulate in the tube and be absorbed by the film. A light source located at one end of the tube and a light detector at the other end determines the amount of light absorbed by the nanoparticle film due to exposure to chemical vapor. A signal from the light detector is applied to an electronic processor that determines attenuation of light by the film, and the processor is connected to an indicator to provide an indication of the exposure of the film to the vapor.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 2008Date of Patent: February 22, 2011Assignee: Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada, as represented by the Minister of National Defence of Her Majesty's Canadian GovernmentInventors: E. Patent number: 7662575Abstract: This invention discloses methods for identifying Francisella tularensis vaccine candidates. It enables identification of novel vaccine candidates and quality assurance for vaccine batches, assessment of protection in vaccinates and identification of the infecting agent in vaccinates. Mice were first vaccinated with Brucella abortus O-polysaccharide (OPS) vaccine. These animals were then given 10 LD50s of F. tularensis live vaccine strain (LVS). Sixty percent (60%) of the vaccinated mice survived the multiple lethal doses. Sera were collected from these surviving mice and the antibodies were used to probe supernatant and cell lysates of live F. tularensis LVS cultures. Several F. tularensis components were identified only by the noted “survivor” antisera. Of these identified proteins, enzyme digestions and chemical oxidation suggest post-translational modifications of some proteins e.g. a 52 kDa glycoprotein, a 45 kDa lipoprotein and a 19 kDa nucleoprotein.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2007Date of Patent: February 16, 2010Assignee: Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada, as represented by the Minister of National Defence of Her Majesty's Canadian GovernmentInventors: Christopher Sikora, Bradley Berger, John Cherwonogrodzky

Patent number: 7175130Abstract: A guidance system for a missile with a laser beam source located at a distance from the missile generating a modulated laser beam that is directed towards the missile. A group of backward looking sensors on the body of the missile detect any radiation scattered from the laser beam along with a group of forward looking sensors located on the missile. Both groups look at an angle to the missile's longitudinal axis. Signals from the sensors are applied to processing electronics in the missile that determine the phase shift in signals derived from when a backward looking sensor detects scattered radiation from a laser beam and a forward looking sensor detects scattered radiation from that beam. The processing electronics can then accurately determine the distance between the missile and the beam from the phase shift and correct the missile's trajectory to maintain its position with respect to the beam.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 2004Date of Patent: February 13, 2007Assignee: Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada, as represented by the Minister of National Defence of Her Majesty's Canadian GovernmentInventors: Jacques Dubois, Jean Fortin, Pierre Mathieu

Patent number: 6535570Abstract: A method of tracking organ motion and removing motion artifacts in conventional computer tomography scans is disclosed. Sensor time series indicative of projection measurement data of the object are correlated using a software spatial overlap correlator method in order to obtain a sinogram indicative of organ motion. The software spatial overlap correlator method is based on the fact that the image sampling process of a computer tomography scanner is periodical, therefore, image samples taken at a time t and at a time t+T are taken from identical spatial locations. The sinogram is then processed using a retrospective gating method or a coherent sinogram synthesis method in order to correct the image data for motion effects. This method for motion correction is software based and, therefore, can be easily implemented in existing computer tomography systems without major hardware modification.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 2001Date of Patent: March 18, 2003Assignee: Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada, as represented by the Minister of National Defence of Her Majesty's Canadian GovernmentInventors: Stergios Stergiopoulos, Amar C.
