A patient controls the access of the healthcare providers to the patient's medical records held in a medical record database. The patient determines access rights to be granted to the healthcare provider and generates an access authorization message which specifies the access rights. The access authorization message is transmitted from the patient to one or more healthcare providers. The healthcare provider transmits the access authorization together with a request for access to the patient's medical records to the medical record database. The medical record database verifies that the access authorization message originated from the patient before granting the healthcare provider access to the patient's medical records in accordance with the access authorization message.

The received biometric data are compared with corresponding authentic biometric data which have previously been obtained from the genuine-user. The user's identity is authenticated if the received biometric data meet qualification criteria when compared with the corresponding authentic biometric data.

Abstract: An image and associated information provided in a Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) dataset can be delivered to a web browser. The DICOM dataset is separated into image data and associated data. The image data is translated into an image file and the associated data in an associated file is described using a format which is understood by the web browser. The image file and associated file are transmitted over a communications network to the web browser and the web browser is then used to display the image and associated information from the image file and associated file respectively.
