  • Patent number: 10829892
Abstract: A pulp in accordance with a particular embodiment includes crosslinked cellulose fibers. The pulp can have high brightness, reactivity, and intrinsic viscosity. The pulp, therefore, can be well suited for use as a precursor in the production of low-color, high-viscosity cellulose derivatives. A method in accordance with a particular embodiment of the present technology includes forming a pulp from a cellulosic feedstock, bleaching the pulp, crosslinking cellulose fibers within the pulp while the pulp has a high consistency, and drying the pulp. The bleaching process can reduce a lignin content of the pulp to less than or equal to 0.09% by oven-dried weight of the crosslinked cellulose fibers. Crosslinking the cellulose fibers can include exposing the cellulose fibers to a glycidyl ether crosslinker having two or more glycidyl groups and a molecular weight per epoxide within a range from 140 to 175.

  • Publication number: 20200308766
Abstract: Disclosed herein are treated pulp sheets comprising cellulose pulp fibers treated with a densifying agent and having a relatively low moisture content. In certain embodiments, the treated pulp sheets are used to produce fiberized pulp having an unexpectedly low knot content, while maintaining density and softness properties usually associated with similarly treated pulp that is fiberized at higher moisture content. Methods of making fiberized pulp from the treated pulp sheets, as well as products comprising the treated pulp sheets or fiberized pulp from the treated pulp sheets, are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20200216624
Abstract: A composite material includes a thermoplastic polymer matrix throughout which cellulose pulp fibers and filler material are dispersed. The composite may be in solid (e.g. pellet) form, or molten form. The presence of cellulose pulp fibers unexpectedly reduces cycle time, and/or unexpectedly improves certain properties, when the composite is used in injection molding. A method for molding a part includes providing a solid composite that includes thermoplastic polymer, filler material, and cellulose pulp fibers to an injection molding system; melting the polymer to produce a molten mixture; and injecting the molten mixture into a mold. Another method for molding a part includes injecting a molten mixture of thermoplastic polymer, filler material, and cellulose pulp fibers into a mold; and removing the formed part from the mold after a cycle time at least 10% less than that required when using a comparable molten mixture that excludes the pulp fibers.

  • Publication number: 20200181840
Abstract: Bleached polycrylic acid crosslinked cellulose fibers with reduced furfural content are disclosed. The reduced furfural content is accompanied by a strong reduction of malodor associated with crosslinked fibers. Methods of furfural reduction include treatment with hydrogen peroxide in the absence of alkaline or other bleaching agents subsequent to curing polyacrylic acid crosslinked cellulose fibers. Some embodiments of treated polycrylic acid crosslinked cellulose fibers have a furfural content lower than 1.3 ppm. In some embodiments, the reduction of furfural content of the treated crosslinked fibers compared to untreated crosslinked fibers is at least 55%. in some embodiments, furfural content decreases with aging of the treated crosslinked fibers.

  • Patent number: 10641667
Abstract: Collecting roll data associated with a sensing and mating rolls that form a nip uses first and second pluralities of sensors. Each sensor of the first plurality has a corresponding sensor in the second plurality which is associated with a same respective axial location on the sensing roll but is spaced-apart circumferentially. The sensors are located at axially spaced-apart locations of the sensing roll and generate either a first or second respective signal when entering the nip. Upon receiving a generated signal, a determination is made about which sensor generated the received signal and the membership of that sensor in one of the pluralities. Based upon a rotational position of the mating roll, a determination is made of which tracking segment associated with the mating roll enters the region of the nip concurrently with the signal to store the signal using the determined one tracking segment and the determined membership.

  • Publication number: 20200087435
Abstract: Grafted, crosslinked cellulosic materials include cellulose fibers and polymer chains composed of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated acid group-containing monomer (such as acrylic acid) grafted thereto, in which one or more of said cellulose fibers and said polymer chains are crosslinked (such as by intra-fiber chain-to-chain crosslinks). Some of such materials are characterized by a wet bulk of about 10.0-17.0 cm3/g, an IPRP value of about 1000 to 7700 cm2/MPa·sec, and/or a MAP value of about 7.0 to 38 cm H2O. Methods for producing such materials may include grafting polymer chains from a cellulosic substrate, followed by treating the grafted material with a crosslinking agent adapted to effect crosslinking of one or more of the cellulosic substrate or the polymer chains. Example crosslinking mechanisms include esterfication reactions, ionic reactions, and radical reactions, and example crosslinking agents include pentaerythritol, homopolymers of the graft species monomer, and hyperbranched polymers.
