  • Patent number: 6094981
Abstract: The basic windshield assembly 10 is well known and includes an outer layer 12 of glass and an inner layer 18 of glass with a sheet of transparent plastic 24 sandwiched between and bonded to the layers 12 and 18 of glass. A metal oxide coating 26 is disposed between the outer layer 12 of glass and the plastic sheet 24 as well known in the art and is transparent for filtering light, and is also electrically conductive. Accordingly, the assembly 10 is characterized by an isolated section, generally indicated at 28, of the coating 26 being electrically separated from the remainder of the coating 26 for capacitively sensing the presence of moisture on the outer surface 14 of the outer layer 12 of glass. The isolated section 28 of the coating 26 comprises a first plurality of electrodes 30 and a second plurality of electrodes 32, the first 30 and second 32 plurality of electrodes being parallel, interdigitized or interleaved and spaced from one another.

  • Patent number: 5949211
Abstract: A switched reluctance motor includes an auxiliary winding interspersed among the main phase windings such that a constant inductance ratio is established between the main and auxiliary windings regardless of rotor position. The auxiliary winding preferably has a higher inductance compared to the main winding. A test current is injected into the auxiliary winding in order to indirectly determine rotor position and the auxiliary winding is utilized to maintain a holding torque under static load conditions. The disclosed design and methodology improves motor function capabilities and economies.

  • Patent number: 5862903
Abstract: A centrifugal clutch for use with a power door lock actuator. The centrifugal clutch includes an independently rotatable pinion cup having an integral pinion gear which meshes with a jack screw, and a driver rotatably secured to an output shaft of a drive motor. The driver has at least one radially outwardly opening recess formed therein with at least one slider slidably retained within the recess. The slider is biased in a radially inward direction by magnetic lines of force which are provided by a permanent magnet mounted within the driver. Alternatively, a number of sliders can be formed of magnetic material such that the magnetic sliders are mutually attracted to one another in a radially inward direction. A centrifugal force is generated when the driver is rotated. The centrifugal force overcomes the magnetic attractive force to throw the sliders radially outwardly into positive driving engagement with the pinion cup.

  • Patent number: 5860185
Abstract: A windshield wiper system and method comprising a controller which cooperates with a single sensor positioned in fixed relationship to a target situated on an armature of a drive motor which is driven in response to the controller. The wiper motor is a reversing wiper motor and changes direction in response to a change of polarity of drive signal generated by controller. An interrupt is situated on a drive train driven by the armature of the wiper motor and moves in correlation to the movement of a wiper blade. The sensor generates a pulse train associated with the movement of the wiper blade, and this pulse train gets interrupted by the interrupt when the wiper blade reaches a reversing position, such as an inwipe or an outwipe position. The interruption thereby gives controller an indication of when to reverse the polarity of the drive signal used to drive the wiper motor.

  • Patent number: 5852352
Abstract: In an ordinary DC motor in a windshield wiper, operating speed tends to increase as the motor brushes become seated. The invention counteracts this tendency by providing a brush geometry which causes the effective angular position of a brush to change during seating. The change is in a direction which tends to reduce speed.

  • Patent number: 5833441
Abstract: A system and method for sealing a pressure area in a washer pump is disclosed. The system and method provides designed interference and contact points between a plurality of adjacent walls which are arranged to define a serpentine channel and which are integrally molded into a pump housing and a motor housing. At least one of the plurality of walls becomes biased in response to fluid pressure in a pressure area such that it engages one or more of the plurality of walls in the mating housing to provide at least one seal to seal the pressure area. The walls may be provided with a beveled edge to facilitate providing a "point contact" to enhance sealing. The system and method reduce or entirely eliminate the need for an O-ring between, for example, the pump housing and the motor housing.

  • Patent number: 5829305
Abstract: This invention deals with a system and method for manufacturing a drive gear having a plurality of teeth in cross section where the teeth are situated on a drive shaft in a substantially parallel manner. The drive gear is characterized in that the teeth are substantially parallel to each other and contact mating driven teeth at points which define an arc which is not concentric about an axis of the driven gear. The drive gear is characterized in that it has multi-tooth contact points which do not contact the teeth of the mating gear at exactly the same contact point on the mating teeth, thereby lengthening the life of the driven gear as well as distributing the torque load to a plurality of teeth. A method and procedure for generating a drive gear having the features of the present invention is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5818187
Abstract: The invention concerns an improved system for windshield wipers in vehicles. An induction motor is used, in which speed is accurately controlled by controlling frequency of power supplied to the motor. The induction motor may be of the consequent-pole type, which ordinarily does not produce sufficient torque. Addition of (a) auxiliary tooth slotting and (b) skew has raised the torque produced to acceptable levels. The invention includes a control system, which senses excess load on the motor, which occurs as the windshield dries, and reduces motor speed, subject to a minimum, in response.

  • Patent number: 5784749
Abstract: A system and method for sealing a windshield washer reservoir is illustrated comprising a one-piece molded cap and strap. The one-piece cap and strap comprises integrally molded and mating hinge members which facilitate hingeably mounting the cap onto the strap after they have been separated from each other. This facilitates providing a sealing system and method having some of the advantages of a one-piece molded construction, while at the same time permitting the user to experience the advantages of a two-piece hinge construction. In another embodiment, an integrally molded cam defining a cam surface and a mating engaging surface are provided which cooperate to not only separate the cap from the strap, but also to cause the pin associated with the cap to be guided into the socket such that when the cap is actuated from an open position to a closed position, the integrally molded cap and strap become separated and substantially simultaneously hingeably mounted together.
