Abstract: Low-gloss, two-component clear coats include a base resin including a urethane resin, an isocyanate resin that combines with the base resin immediately prior to application of the low -gloss, two-component clear coat to form a two-component base resin mixture, wherein the two-component base resin mixture comprises from about 20 weight percent to about 40 weight percent urethane resin and from about 20 weight percent to about 40 weight percent isocyanate resin, and a silica-based flattener, wherein the silica-based flattener comprises from about 5 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the two-component base resin mixture to about 20 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the two-component base resin mixture, wherein the low-gloss, two-component clear coat has a 60° gloss finish from 22 gloss units to 34 gloss units when cured.

Abstract: The invention provides a thermosetting powder coating composition comprising (A) a vinyl copolymer having a number average molecular weight of 1,500 to 6,000, a molecular weight distribution of 1.0 to 1.5 as represented by a weight average molecular weight/a number average molecular weight and a glass transition temperature of 40 to 100.degree. C., the copolymer containing at least one species of functional group selected from the class consisting of epoxy group, carboxyl group and hydroxyl group, and (B) a curing agent. The thermosetting powder coating composition of the invention is superior in any of the finished appearance of coating film and the blocking resistance.

Abstract: The present invention provides a base coat composition for forming a topcoat comprising (A) a compound having at least two epoxy groups in one molecule, (B) a compound having at least two carboxyl groups in one molecule, (C) a melamine resin of a polymerization degree of 1.6 to 3.5 having 0.3 to 3.5 imino groups per triazine nucleus, 0.3 to 3.5 methylol groups per triazine nucleus and 2 to 5.5 alkyl ether groups per triazine nucleus and (D) a coloring pigment and/or a metallic pigment, at least one of the components (A) and (B) having a hydroxyl group. The present invention also provides a coating method using said base coat composition and a clear coat composition mainly comprising said components (A) and (B).

Abstract: An aqueous coating composition comprising an acrylic resin-modified epoxy resin (D), which is obtained by the reaction between a mixture of a bisphenol F based epoxy resin (A) and a bisphenol F based phenoxy resin (B) and an acrylic resin having carboxyl functionality (C), said acrylic resin-modified epoxy resin (D) being dispersed into water, preferably by using ammonia or amine, provides a composition with low viscosity, excellent storage stability and excellent application workability. In addition, the coating of the present invention can be applied to an interior surface and the resulting film has a smooth surface, excellent processability, excellent retorting resistant properties, excellent adhesion properties, and excellent corrosion resistant properties.
Abstract: A process for formation of a water repellent coating which comprises applying a topcoat coating composition of a fluorine containing thermosetting resin and granular compound of 5 microns or less in mean particle size to a substrate bearing a thermosetting undercoat coating film which is semi crosslinked, and then co-curing both films by heating. The resulting cured coating has a water repellent surface, excellent adhesion to a substrate, excellent corrosion resistance, no staying of water as droplets on the surface and no foul odor. The coating is especially suitable for applying to aluminum fins of a heat exchanger.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for forming a coating film, comprising the steps of:(a) coating a metal panel with a cationic electrophoretic coating composition and heating the composition to form an electrophoretic coating,(b) applying to the electrophoretic coating an aqueous primer containing a polyurethane emulsion prepared by subjecting a carboxyl-containing urethane prepolymer to chain extension by water,(c) applying an intermediate coating composition to the primer surface,(d) baking the aqueous primer and the intermediate coating composition at the same time, and(e) applying a top coating composition to the cured coating and baking the composition.
Abstract: A sealed container material having a deoxidation function comprises a metallic base material reactive with oxygen and a hydrophilic coating layer of water-soluble polymer such as hydroxyethyl cellulose formed on the surface of the metallic base material. An oxygen- and moisture-permeable coating layer composed of a polymethylpentene resin may further be provided on the hydrophilic coating layer. The material exhibits an excellent oxygen absorbing ability and is thus suited as a material for sealed containers, such as cans, bottles, capsules, etc., for encasing food, drink, chemicals, and medical drugs and storing them over a long period of time without denaturation or deterioration.

Abstract: A process for producing an aqueous emulsion of unsaturated resin suitable for radiation curing coating compositions comprises the steps of: synthesizing polyvinyl resin having an acid value of 50 to 230 by solution polymerization, adding a monomer having both epoxy group and reactive unsaturated group to said polyvinyl resin, if necessary further mixing a monomer of above 190.degree. Abstract: A hardenable coating composition which forms an excellent coating film having good properties of transparency, flexibility, hardness and noncombustibility and comprises an aqueous dispersion of silica-polyvinyl alcohol complex prepared by the reaction between colloidal silica dispersion and polyvinyl alcohol solution at a temperature above 50.degree. C. Said reaction can be accelerated by accelerators di- or tri-alkoxy silane accelerators and the properties of the obtained coating film can be improved by the addition of curing agents such as alkoxides and water soluble metallic salts.
Abstract: A process for preparing a thermosetting powder coating composition comprising the steps of copolymerizing 5 to 25 wt.% of at least one of glycidyl acrylate and glycidyl methacrylate with 95 to 75 wt.% of an ethylenically unsaturated compound in a solvent having a boiling point of up to 170.degree. C to obtain a solution of copolymer, the copolymer having a number average molecular weight of 2,000 to 30,000 and a melt viscosity of 100 to 500 poises at 160.degree. C, uniformly dispersing a pigment into the copolymer solution, removing the solvent from the resulting mixture at a temperature of 170.degree. to 220.degree. C and reduced pressure, thereafter admixing a di- or tri-carboxylic acid cross-linking agent with the mixture with heating at a temperature of up to 120.degree. C, and pulverizing the solid mixture obtained.
