    Abstract: Disclosed is a cutting tool for milling works which employs a cutting insert. The cutting tool for milling works employs a cutting insert. By forming a concave nick cutting edge on the lateral surface of the cutting insert, it may cut a chip in a short form in case of high depth of cutting to shorten the effective cutting edge, so as to reduce a friction and a cutting resistance, thereby increasing the life span of the cutting tool as well as to facilitate a chip disposal and reduce the cutting resistance, so as to increase a feed rate at a high depth of cutting, thereby enhancing the productivity of the cutting works. By forming concave recesses on the upper and lower surfaces of the cutting insert it may reduce the cutting resistance between the chip being short cut by the concave nick cutting edge and the upper and lower surfaces.

The cutting insert has an upper surface (201), a lower surface (205), and first and second cutting edge corner parts (210) and (220), which are provided on the upper surface such that the upper surface has a symmetrical structure with respect to a diagonal direction. The cutting insert further has a major cutting edge part (230), a first minor cutting edge part (240), and a lowered cutting edge part (250). The major cutting edge part has a downwardly inclined angle ranging from 3° to 10°, and extends from the first cutting edge corner part towards the corresponding second cutting edge corner part. When seen in the front view of the cutting insert, the major cutting edge is defined by a convex curved line, which has a curvature radius of 1000 mm or more.

According to the present invention, an ?-Al2O3thin film is deposited on a TiAlvBwCxNyOz (v+w+x+y+z=1, v, w, x, y, z?0) thin film in a thickness of 2-15 ?m, so that the ratio of TC (104) (denoting the texture coefficient of the (104) crystal plane of the polycrystalline ?-Al2O3 thin film) to TC (012) (denoting the texture coefficient of the (012) crystal) is more than 1.3. Cutting tools coated with such a thin film have improved wear resistance and adhesion.

A lower surface of the cutting insert is formed as a plane. The lower surface is firmly fixed on a holder for cutting tool and supports the cutting insert when mounting the cutting insert in the holder for cutting tool.
