Abstract: The disclosed embodiments provide a system that processes data. During operation, the system obtains a set of records, wherein each of the records comprises one or more metrics and at least one dimension associated with the one or more metrics. Next, the system creates a data segment from the records by sorting the records by a primary sort column having a first set of possible values, creating a set of dictionaries for a set of columns in the records, and building a set of forward indexes for the columns using the set of dictionaries.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for gravity-based access control. An apparatus may be secured with a gravity-based password that reflects a pattern of manipulation or movement of the apparatus. As the apparatus is moved or reoriented, data produced by a sensor (e.g., an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a position sensor) is assembled to form the password. Elements of the password may identify surfaces of the apparatus as it is flipped or placed in different orientations, or may represent the received sensor data (e.g., acceleration force of gravity, displacement). The sensor data may be multi-dimensional. A target or model password is received and saved, and a user must recreate or re-enter the same pattern in order to unlock the device or otherwise make it available for use.

Abstract: A method and system to present an optimum action in response to a flow of actions in a computer network from a user are provided. For each of a plurality of possible presented actions corresponding to a particular flow of actions in a computer network, and for each of one or more possible performed actions for each possible presented action, a likelihood that a user will perform the possible performed action is determined. Then each of the determined likelihoods is weighted by applying a weight assigned to a corresponding possible presented action. An optimum presented action is identified determining a presented action having a weighted maximum determined likelihood, based on the weighted determined likelihood.

Abstract: A system, apparatus, computer-program product and method are provided for identifying members of a particular user segment. One particular user segment of interest includes members who work for employers having a number of employees within a predetermined range. Members of an online service provide data purporting to identify their employers and/or other personal or professional attributes. The data entries are normalized by standardizing terms, removing superfluous or unneeded terms, and/or performing other processing. The members are then clustered according to their normalized employer names, and members within clusters that have sizes within the range are added to the user segment. Invalid employer names (e.g., fictitious companies, non-existent entities) may be filtered out. Within a cluster, a professional social networking site (or other site) may be analyzed to determine if the clustered members have developed relationships; if not, the cluster may be cancelled.

Abstract: A system, method, and apparatus are provided for supporting and/or executing count-distinct queries. A large set of data (e.g., tens or hundreds of millions of event records) is condensed daily to generate presence bitmaps to reflect the distinctiveness of a selected data dimension S (e.g., user ID) for one or more key dimensions g1, g2, . . . (e.g., advertisement ID, campaign ID, advertiser ID). The condensation process eliminates duplication and yields a single value (e.g., 1 or 0) for each tuple [S, g1, . . . ] to represent the distinctiveness of each value in the S dimension to each combination of values in the grouping dimensions. On a monthly basis, the daily values are condensed to yield a single value for the month, and a similar process is applied on any other desired time granularities (e.g., year). The condensed data may be generated for any combination of selected dimension(s) and grouping dimension(s).
Abstract: Detecting one or more preference events is disclosed. A rule defining a set of conditions associated with a set of preference events to be detected is received. An indication that one or more preference events has occurred is received. It is determined whether the set of conditions included in the rule has been met. If the set of conditions has been met, an alert is generated.
Abstract: Disclosed in some examples are methods, systems, and machine-readable mediums which provide a relevance engine for determining a relevance of an individual (either a non-member or another member) to another individual (either a non-member or another member). This relevance engine may use signals in the form of data that the social networking service may learn about the individuals to determine how relevant the individuals are to each other. Example applications may include ordering of connection invitations in a social networking service.

Abstract: A method of generating alerts pertaining to a commute by the user and selecting content items to be presented to the user in conjunction with the alerts is disclosed. A pattern in a commuting by a user is detected. A content item is selected based on a correspondence between the content item and other users and a similarity between the user and the other users. An alert is generated pertaining to a milestone in the pattern of the commuting by the user. The content item and the alert are transmitted for presentation in combination to the user during the commuting by the user.
Abstract: The disclosed embodiments provide a system that processes user data. During operation, the system obtains a set of ranking engines for a set of products and selects a ranking engine from the set of ranking engines. Next, the system provides the user data for a user to the ranking engine and obtains, in response to the provided user data, a list of ranked products for the user from the ranking engine. Finally, the system provides the products to the user based on the list to facilitate selection of one or more of the products by the user.

Abstract: Techniques for analyzing a social graph of a social networking service to derive a social proximity score representing a measure of how socially connected a member is to a target entity are described. With some embodiments, an aggregate social proximity score is derived to reflect a measure of how well socially connected a person is to a set of organizations representing customer accounts of a business organization. Accordingly, the aggregate social proximity score can be used to compare candidates in a hiring decision, or to identify potential candidates during recruiting.

Abstract: Techniques for analyzing a social graph of a social networking service to derive a social proximity score representing a measure of how socially connected a member is to a target entity are described. With some embodiments, for each member of the social networking service in a pre-defined group of members, a social proximity score is derived to reflect a measure of how socially connected the member is to a target entity (e.g., company, school, government institution, or some other organization). The social proximity score for each member-target entity pairing may be based on a variety of factors derived from analyzing the social graph, member profile information, and in some instances, the activity and behavior of the members.

Abstract: The disclosed embodiments relate to a rack for housing electronic components with a movable power distribution unit (PDU). The rack includes a rack housing configured to accommodate a plurality of electronic components. It also includes a first PDU configured to supply electrical power to the plurality of electronic components. The rack additionally includes an attachment mechanism configured to movably attach the first PDU to the rack housing, so that the first PDU can be moved to create an access space to facilitate a maintenance operation while the first PDU continues to supply power to the plurality of electronic components.
Abstract: Evaluating an item based on user reputation information is disclosed. Sharing event data is received. A graph is materialized from the received sharing event data. User reputation scores are determined based at least in part on the graph. A score is assigned to the item based at least in part on the user reputation scores of users associated with the item.
Abstract: Recording a user's preference for content is disclosed. A first indication that a user has a first preference for the content is received. In response to receiving the second indication, the content is additional associated with the second preference.
Abstract: A method and system to provide reputation scores for a social network member is described. An example system comprises an access module, a unit score generator, and a combined reputation score generator. The access module accesses a member profile, and the unit score generator generates reputation scores for one or more units of the member profile. The member profile represents a member of an on-line social network. The combined reputation score generator generates a combined reputation score for the member profile based on the respective reputation scores for the one or more profile units.
Abstract: An embodiment searches a social network for at least one trigger event, detects one or more trigger events, and communicates the detected one or more trigger events as an alert. Searching the social network comprises searching member profiles and searching member activities. Detected one or more trigger events are centralized into a sortable list and prioritized based on business entities and the importance of the trigger events to persons related to the business entities. The centralized sortable list is fed into a customer relations management system which presents the alerts on a user interface. A plurality of types of triggers includes people updates, company updates, product purchases, and product usage.
