Patents Assigned to Metal Box Limited
  • Patent number: 3990586
Abstract: An apparatus is described for applying leverlids to filled paint cans so that a later machine may fit the lids onto the cans by downward pressure. The apparatus has an inclined chute onto which the lids are fed and which is arranged to discharge the lids accurately onto paint cans moving on a horizontal conveyor beneath the apparatus. To control the movement of the lids onto the cans two release members rotatable about generally vertical axes are mounted on either side of the chute outlet so as to obstruct the outlet until such time as a paint can on the conveyor frees the release members for movement and thereafter pushes the release members aside.

  • Patent number: 3977340
Abstract: In a can one end of which is closed by a diaphragm the diaphragm is positioned against a peripherally extending flattened bead which is formed in the can body and extends into the body and the diaphragm is clinched against the flattened bead by overturning and inturning of the portion of the body which extends from the flattened bead to the mouth of the body.

  • Patent number: 3975886
Abstract: This disclosure relates to a capping machine for applying caps to containers, such as jars. The capping machine is provided with a simple automatic cap feed wherein the caps are gravity fed through an orienting chute which directs the caps towards a cap locating station with which there is aligned a capping chuck. The caps are primarily advanced by gravity and as they approach the cap locating station, fluid jets, preferably steam, are directed against the caps to advance them to their positions in alignment with the capping chuck. Means are also provided for directing jets of steam into the top of a container to which a cap is to be applied to displace air between the container neck and the cap and thus create a partial vacuum within the sealed container.

  • Patent number: 3946930
Abstract: This disclosure relates to a jet soldering apparatus for applying a jet of solder to a side seam of a can body formed in a bodymaker. The soldering apparatus includes a heated metal block having an elongated cavity which terminates in a discharge orifice. Solder wire is fed into the cavity and is heated therein by means of electrical heaters connected to the block. The cavity has an inlet in the form of a bore which substantially corresponds to the diameter of the solder wire so that the solder wire prevents any back flow of molten solder through the inlet. The cavity is also in the form of a bore generally conforming to the diameter of the solder wire and is of a length to make certain that the solder wire is fully melted before it reaches the discharge orifice. Feed means are provided to intermittently feed the solder wire in accordance with the presentation of a can body to the discharge orifice. The feed means include a reciprocating chuck and a staionary chuck which act in unison.

  • Patent number: 3937112
Abstract: In an apparatus for feeding a web, the web is continuously pulled from a reel by driven pairs of pinch rolls to create a loose storage loop from which the web is fed along a guide channel to a further pair of feed rolls, which when signalled passes material to a work station, under the influence of tensioning rolls acting on the web beyond the work station. Means are also provided for detecting and fullfilling the need for delivery of the web.

  • Patent number: 3934780
Abstract: The present tubular containers, for example for foodstuffs, toothpaste, or the like, have a top cap secured to an initially open ended tubular body by means of a heat bond such as soldering where metal containers are involved or welding or fusing where plastics materials are involved. The heat for making the bond is generated by friction resulting from relative rotation between the cap and the tubular body. For this purpose, a tool is provided with a rotatably supported counter presser forming an inner holding member and with a rotating presser tool forming an outer holding member which holding members hold the cap therebetween so that its outer rim contacts the edge of the tubular body to produce frictional heat when the cap and tubular body are rotated relative to each other, said frictional heat being sufficient to cause said bond.
