    Abstract: An apparatus for storing and dispensing a quantity of aerated liquid for maintaining the carbonation of a beverage in a container. The apparatus includes a vessel containing a source of gas, a valve closing the vessel and a pressure regulator that couples the valve to the vessel. The pressure regulator is capable of delivering the gas to the container at a substantially constant pressure substantially lower than the pressure under which the gas is kept in the vessel. A tap permits delivery of the gas to, and dispensing of the liquid from the container.

    Abstract: An outfeed transfer device has a rotatable turret from which radiate a plurality of can grippers each of which is arranged to grip a can delivered to it at an outfeed station of an electro-coating apparatus, and then to rotate the can, so as to empty fluid still remaining in it, before releasing it in the inverted draining position on to an outfeed conveyor. Each can gripper comprises a jaw assembly carried on a radial shaft which is mounted for rotation in a turret side wall. A pinion fixed on that shaft is rotated by a vertical rack which is slidably carried in transverse walls of the turret. Each jaw assembly is operated by a slidable shaft carried co-axially in the associated radial shaft. The respective racks and co-axial shafts are driven by cam followers biased against stationary cams disposed within the turret.

    Abstract: A method of producing a continuous seam weld between two mating surfaces of a can includes the steps of supplying a bolus of laser energy at alternate spaced locations along the line of the mating surfaces to effect local melting of the mating surfaces. The bolus of energy is then allowed to dissipate initially by way of an enlargement in the size of the melt pool and subsequently by cooling to a level at which the pool solidifies. A further bolus of laser energy is supplied at intervening spaced locations along the line of the mating surfaces to effect local melting of the mating surfaces. This bolus of energy is allowed to dissipate initially by way of an increase in the size of the melt pool and subsequently by cooling. The spacing between the alternate and intervening locations and the power of the bolus of energy being of such magnitude that the size of each pool produced at each intervening location during its enlargement overlaps a solidified pool.

    Abstract: A pump (18) draws liquefied carbon-dioxide from a reservoir (4 or 6) and delivers it via a controllable heater (20) and a filling valve (14) to a cylinder (26) to be filled to any required density. This receiver cylinder (26) is controllably warmed by a heater (32) while sensors (22,24) are provided to indicate the pressure and temperature of its contents. For each required density a table of figures is provided relating pressures (above saturation pressure) to temperature, for that density. A temperature (which must be clear above the lowest temperature at which the receiver will be liquid-full at the required density but which need not exceed the critical temperature) is selected, and the heaters (20 and 32) are controlled so that the receiver cylinder and its contents will converge at or near that temperature as filling is completed. During the final phase of filling the indicated temperature will rise slowly and the pressure (from the time the receiver is liquid-full) will rise relatively fast.

    Abstract: A multilayer plastics sheet destined to be formed into foodstuff containers by thermoforming has a barrier layer for low oxygen permeability, and incorporates reclaim material for providing desired mechanical properties to the sheet. The reclaim material represents 40-60% of the sheet by volume, and in order to incorporate these high reclaim levels without concomitant organoleptic problems the reclaim material is formed as a single layer adjacent what is to be the outside surface of the container. The sheet is accordingly highly asymmetric, but any substantial polymer melt instability during coextrusion tending to cause layer thickness variation and lack of visual appeal of the sheet is prevented by forming the sheet as two substantially symmetrical components which are individually and separately coextruded, and subsequently extrusion laminated together. Of the components one includes, and is symmetrical in relation to, the barrier layer, and the other likewise incorporates the reclaim layer.

    Abstract: A valve which comprises a closure member adapted for attachment to the container. The closure member defines an aperture therein. A hollow grommet of flexible material having a flange portion to one side of the closure member and a tubular portion extends through the aperture in the closure member. A valve rod having at one end a flange engaged with the underside of the flange of the grommet and a hollow stem portion extending through the grommet to protrude therefrom such that upon tilting of the valve rod relative to the closure member the flange of the valve rod parts from the underside of the flange of the grommet to uncover a radial hole in the stem portion through which pressurized fluid can pass into the hollow stem portion for dispensing. A gallery or annular passageway is provided in between the grommet and flange of the valve rod and arranged to admit pressurizing gas through the closure member into the container when the valve rod is tilted.

    Abstract: A temperature monitoring system includes a linear array of six pyroelectric sensors mounted in a block. A through hole is provided in the block for each sensor. A bore in the block having an axis which intersects the axis of each through hole accommodates a rotary shaft. The shaft is provided with a diametrically extending bore for each through hole. Thus rotation of the shaft alternately exposes each sensor to the shaft itself and to an object in the line of sight of each sensor as defined by its corresponding throughhole. The output signal from each sensor is differentiated and used to provide a temperature measurement. The output signal is corrected for any drift in the temperature of the shaft or block. This is effected by periodically bringing a heated calibration head operating at a known temperature into the line of sight of each sensor.

    Abstract: A retortable, hydraulically solid, sealed package (10) containing a liquid or semi-liquid food product (24) comprises a thermoplastics container (12) formed by a thermo-forming process and a heat-shrinkable thermoplastics closure diaphragm (20). The closure diaphragm is heat-sealed to a rim (18) of the container after the headspace above the product has been evacuated, and is subsequently subjected to external pressure so as to be non-elastically stretched and made to lie wholly in contact with the enclosed product. When retorted (e.g. for sterilization) the package suffers no visible deformation of the container (12), despite the considerable volume shrinkage of the container which may occur. The loss of volume caused by this volume shrinkage is accommodated by a reduction in the concavity of the diaphragm (20) caused by a corresponding heat-induced shrinkage of the diaphragm material.
