    Abstract: Techniques are provided for selecting an access point (AP) to communicate with from a plurality of candidate access points (APs) when a wireless communication device (WCD) roams in a wireless local area network (WLAN). The WCD can determine whether a particular link quality metric (e.g., a signal strength indicator value) of a particular preferred access point (that has the highest link quality metric) is greater than an upper threshold. If so, the WCD can then create a preferred candidate list that comprises only preferred access points, and determine whether a current serving access point of the wireless communication device is a preferred access point. If the current serving access point is not a preferred access point, the WCD can initiate a roam to the particular preferred access point that has the strongest link quality metric.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a system that enables power to be selectively applied to GPS circuitry in a cellular telephone or other mobile device only when a specific user input is detected. In one embodiment, power to the GPS circuitry may be enabled only when the user strikes the keys “9-1-1.” In other embodiments, other types of GPS enablement or disablement may be employed, such as selectively decoupling the GPS antenna. In another embodiment, the user may depress a privacy bypass button, which alternately enables and disables power to the GPS circuitry. Cellular telephones or other communication devices may therefore activate GPS location service during an emergency call, or when a user wishes to allow their location to be determined, but protect the privacy of that user's location and movement at other times.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for storing data is provided herein. During operation, a server will sign only the signatures of the data portions that were generated during the live local capture. The signature of the local signatures generated during the live local capture will then be used to verify the integrity and authenticity of the local signatures. When the integrity and authenticity of the local signatures is verified, an entity can be assured that server is trusted. When a portion of data is to be removed from the server, the data is removed, without removal of its live-local signature. Because data blocks can be deleted as long as the signature remains stored, the overall incident signature, generated at check-in to the trusted server, will still be verifiable as protecting the authenticity and integrity of all remaining data.
