  • Patent number: 4750787
Abstract: A relay valve for use with a railroad car braking system includes a housing in which a control chamber is disposed between a delivery chamber on an upper side and an exhaust chamber on a lower side. A supply chamber is disposed above the delivery chamber. A control piston disposed in the control chamber is reciprocally-movable as a function of the balance of forces acting on opposing sides of the piston. In order to achieve the desired balance of control fluid pressure to delivery fluid pressure, the surface areas of the piston on which these pressures are exerted are equalized by way of a hollow rod extension coaxially-disposed on the piston, and extending from the lower exhaust chamber to the upper delivery chamber.

  • Patent number: 4744607
Abstract: A railway car braking system employing a pneumatic brake to supplement the primary electric brake is provided with a feedback signal corresponding to the effectiveness of the electric brake. This feedback signal is compared with the brake command signal to derive a deficiency signal, in accordance with which the pneumatic brake is applied. A detector senses a change in the deficiency signal in decreasing sense for applying a correction factor to the deficiency signal, thereby compensating for hysteresis typically associated with the various valves in the pneumatic brake system, in order to obtain consistent pneumatic braking for a given deficiency signal during both an increase and a decrease of the pneumtic braking level.

  • Patent number: 4724859
Abstract: A self-lapping type valve device having a construction in which the pressure force acting on the valve assembly is substantially the same when the valve assembly is in a lap condition following either a pressure-buildup phase of control or a pressure-release phase of control, thereby reducing hysteresis heretofore affecting such valve devices.

  • Patent number: 4721515
Abstract: This invention relates to a novel electronic system for controlling a twin-type of air dryer arrangement. Normally, the adsorption elements (DR1) and (DR2) change over their adsorptive and regenerative cycles alternately by an "ON" signal produced by a governor (GO). In addition, in case that the compressor works continuously for a long period of time, the adsorptive and regenerative cycles are changed over whenever a predeterined time elapses. Thus, it is possible to make the entire air dryer more compact, to have less changeover operation and to use the relevant devices for much longer time.

  • Patent number: 4719536
Abstract: A wheel-slip detection system and/or method for implementing self-readhesion or resticking viscous sticking phenomenon after all the wheels of a car have assumed a slipping condition. The detected data are self-retained until all of the wheel speed differences .DELTA.V become smaller than the first speed value .DELTA..alpha.2 regardless of the restoration of all wheel acceleration by the brake release application. Through this method, it is possible to prevent repeated occurrence of any simultaneous gentle or sluggish-slip state of all the wheels when self-readhesion application is not expected so that the increase of brake distance is avoided.

  • Patent number: 4685750
Abstract: A railway vehicle brake control system in which a fluid pressure brake continuously supplements the electric brake as the electric brake effectiveness fades during vehicle slowdown. An amplifier circuit output signal corresponding to the electric brake effectiveness is modified by adjusting the amplifier gain in response to a detector sensing the initial drop in the electric brake effectiveness. This modified amplifier output signal is subtracted from a brake command signal to obtain a difference signal, the value of which establishes the amount of fluid pressure braking necessary to supplement the electric brake deficiency. The arrangement compensates for hysteresis and response delay in the pneumatic valving required in the fluid pressure brake system, such that the total brake obtained corresponds substantially to the brake command both during and following transition from the electric brake to the fluid pressure brake.

  • Patent number: 4679863
Abstract: A read-convert device for use on an electric brake command car of a railway train having pneumatic brake command cars. A control wire provides the electric emergency brake control on the electric brake command cars, while a brake pipe provides the pneumatic emergency brake control on the pneumatic brake command cars. A cut-off portion of the read-convert device connects a regulated source of pneumatic pressure to the brake pipe when an electric emergency release signal is provided by the control wire, provided a switch valve in the cut-off portion is set for electric brake command operation. Accordingly, an electrically-initiated, emergency brake application on the pneumatic brake command cars can be released through the control wire on the electric brake command cars.

  • Patent number: 4678241
Abstract: An equalizer discharge valve for use on a railroad air brake system includes a valve housing having an equalizer chamber formed therein above a brake pipe chamber and separated by a piston, diaphragm configuration. The diaphragm is sealed on the outer circumference by the connection to the housing and on the inner circumference by the connection to the piston.
