  • Patent number: 5270932
Abstract: A reversible electric motor is coupled for moving a steering wheel of an automotive vehicle in a first direction toward an uppermost position and in a second direction toward a lowermost position. An operation device has a control member movable in first and second directions for producing a signal indicating a desired steering wheel position change corresponding to an extent to which the control member is moved and a desired direction corresponding to a direction in which the control member is moved. A control unit is responsive to the signal from the operation device for operating the electric motor to move the steering wheel in the desired direction. The control unit is arranged to set a length of time based upon the desired steering wheel position change and to operate the electric motor for the time length to make the desired steering wheel position change.

  • Patent number: 5259818
Abstract: An intermediate shaft comprising a shaft body including an axle portion and a portion having an approximately elliptic shape of cross section, both major and minor axes of the elliptical cross-section portion being longer than a diameter of the axle portion, and a ring-shaped member with a cross-sectional shape analogous to the elliptic cross-section portion. A method for assembling this shaft provides for a vibration damping member intervened between the housing member and elliptic cross-section portion for damping vibrations transmitted from the steering gear box. This method also ensures that the housing and the vibration damping members and the elliptic cross-section portion are fitted into an outer tubular envelope, and the ring-shaped member normally has a gap against the outer tubular envelope and transmits rotational torque from the outer tubular envelope to the elliptic cross-section portion when the ring-shaped member is contacted with the outer tubular envelope.

  • Patent number: 5245664
Abstract: An active noise control system includes a plurality of vibration pickups for detecting of physical quantities of noise sources, such as vibrations of suspension members of a vehicle, and a plurality of microphones for detecting residual noises transmitted to observing positions. The output signals of the vibration pickups are added up by means of an adder to be input to a controller. The active noise control system also includes a plurality of delay circuits for applying delay times to the respective output signals of the vibration pickups so as to essentially equalize transmitting time of one of the output signals with that of the other output signals. The output signals of the microphones are input to the controller independently of each other.

  • Patent number: RE34628
Abstract: In order to ensure riding comfort and driving stability in an automotive suspension system, the nature of the effect of the damping force generated by the suspension system is observed. When the damping characteristics of the suspension system are too hard, resulting in amplification of vibrations in the suspension system, the damping characteristics are softened to ensure satisfactory riding comfort. Therefore, according to the present invention, an automotive suspension system has variable damping characteristics which depend on the nature of the damping force produced in response to bounding and/or rebounding motion of the vehicle so as to optimize damping characteristics to achieve both riding comfort and driving stability. In the preferred embodiment, a suspension control system uses the vibration frequency of a sprung mass and the relative speed between the sprung mass and an unsprung mass as control parameters representing the nature of damping force.
