Patents Assigned to Norfolk Southern Railway Co.
  • Patent number: 5692583
Abstract: The handling device is mounted on the lifting blades of a forklift truck and held in position by a safety chain. A frame includes a pair of spaced support members adapted to support the wheels of a wheel assembly therebetween. A removable adapter bar is stored on a stop plate of the frame when larger wheeled assemblies are handled, and may be moved to the outer ends of the support members when smaller wheeled assemblies are handled, in which case the bearing races at the ends of the wheel assembly are supported on conventional bearing race adapters which are supported on the stop plate and the adapter bar. The adapter bar is retained on the stop plate by a pair of spaced plates and a pin on the adapter bar which is received in a hole in the stop plate. The adapter bar is retained at the outer ends of the support members by a pair of spaced plates on one support member and a hole in the other support member which receives the pin on the adapter bar.

  • Patent number: 5481950
Abstract: A rigid head extending laterally from an adjustable handle has an elongate slot therethrough aligned with the longitudinal axis, of the handle for receiving and operating the handle of a valve. A first concave surface is formed in the upper edge of the head for pushing on the spokes of a brake wheel. The first concave surface has opposite ends of similar slope approaching ninety degrees relative to the upper edge for pushing on the spokes of a brake wheel and preventing kick-out of the tool from the brake wheel. A second concave surface is formed in the lower edge of the head for pulling on the spokes of a brake wheel. A first end of the second concave surface has a slope approaching ninety degrees relative to the lower edge. An opposite end of the second concave surface adjacent the outer edge of the head has a slope relative to the lower edge of the head which is significantly less than the slope of the first end to facilitate kick-out of the tool while the brake wheel is in motion.

  • Patent number: 5415087
Abstract: A vehicle supports a first roller conveyor having stop members at opposite sides of the vehicle mounted for pivotal movement between the rollers of the first conveyor to assist in stacking ties on the first conveyor from either side of the vehicle. The first conveyor feeds stacks of ties into a horizontal compression means and a vertical compression and banding means for banding stacks of ties. A second roller conveyor feeds banded stacks of ties away from the banding means. Dump arms at opposite sides of the vehicle are mounted for pivotal movement between the rollers of the second conveyor to dump banded stacks of ties to either side of the vehicle. Hydraulic motors drive the conveyors, and a sensor is provided adjacent the second conveyor to sense the position of a stack of ties, the operation of the hydraulic motors being responsive to the sensor.

  • Patent number: 5219198
Abstract: A device and process for handling headed fasteners to facilitate insertion into a workpiece opening includes a hollow tube and telescoping plunger arrangement, the tube containing the fastener or fasteners which are extended one at a time through a tube slot upon movement to a collapsed position of the device. The fastener is spring gripped by its head in the process of being laterally extended through the slot, and is fully ejected from the device as the device is longitudinally moved in a rearward direction.

  • Patent number: 5181327
Abstract: A gauge for determining the maximum width of a load of material supported on a railway car has an elongated, upstanding boom and car side sill engaging feet extending transversely of one side of the boom. A gauge support is mounted on the opposite side of the boom to facilitate sliding the gauge along a side sill so as to gauge any extent of the material beyond a predetermined fixed distance at which the terminal end of the feet are set from the boom to thereby determine the maximum width of the load of material on the car.

  • Patent number: 5180213
Abstract: A brake pipe continuity valve system permits the coupling of a pusher locomotive such that the engineer on the lead locomotive retains control of the entire train brake system including the pusher locomotive. The end-of-train device remains coupled to the air brake pipe line of the train, and a valve connects the air brake line pressure of the train with the air brake pipe of the pusher locomotive, upon moving the valve to an open position. The valve is automatically closed at the end of the pushing operation by the engineer on the pusher locomotive such that the brake pipe air remains intact throughout the main train including the end-of-train device, while isolating the pusher locomotive permitting it to back off at the end of the pushing operation.

  • Patent number: RE36542
Abstract: A railroad switch stand is provided for operating a railroad switch between two positions. The switch stand comprises a connecting rod connected to an operating mechanism for causing reciprocation of the connecting rod, and a handle connected to the operating mechanism for pivotal movement about a pivot axis between two operative positions. The handle has an open framework having an external configuration which is generally triangular in shape, with the apex of the triangle disposed at the inner end of the handle part where it is connected to a stub portion of the handle. With this configuration, the outer end of the handle presents a portion extending upwardly which can be easily grasped by a railroad personnel when it is desired to throw a switch.
