  • Patent number: 5934379
Abstract: A fire hazard is automatically detected and a fire is prevented or extinguished in an automotive vehicle upon such vehicle being involved in a collision. The vehicle has an air conditioning system including a container and employing CO.sub.2 as a refrigerant. The occurrence of a collision is detected by an impact sensor. In response to detection of the collision by such a sensor, a processing/control unit opens a valve in a line connected to an outlet at or near a bottom of the container. Thereby, the CO.sub.2 refrigerant is released substantially in liquid phase from the container and passed through the line and is discharged as a fire extinguishing agent into various parts of the vehicle, for example the engine compartment.

  • Patent number: 5915455
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for horizontal direct chill casting of light metals, especially magnesium and magnesium alloys. The apparatus includes tundish for containing molten metal and a horizontally disposed mold in communication with the tundish. The mold has a primary cooling circuit for cooling mold walls such that the metal is chilled without any direct contact with the water. Also, a secondary direct cooling circuit is provided. The circuits for primary and secondary cooling water are independent of each other. An insulating transition ring is arranged at the mold entrance. It is important that the total mold depth is short, preferably between 25 and 45 mm. To obtain good surface quality and to avoid discoloring of the metal, it is preferred that the mold has an inlet for supplying protective gas to the transition ring. The inlet opening to the mold should be asymmetrically arranged, nearer the bottom of the mold.

  • Patent number: 5881595
Abstract: A tubular member having integral exterior protrusions is manufactured by providing a hollow element, for example by extrusion, having therein an axially extending interior defined by a surrounding wall having a thickness varying circumferentially. Such hollow element is positioned within a die that has therein lateral voids. The hollow element within the die is subjected, at the interior thereof, to an axially sequential deformation, for example by sequential penetration through the interior by a mandrel. This results in a non-elastic flow of the material of a thicker portion of the wall in lateral directions thereof into the voids in the die. This results in the hollow element, being formed into a tubular member having on the exterior thereof solid protrusions.

  • Patent number: 5863586
Abstract: The invention provides a new feed product, especially a fish feed product in the form of pellets or particles, with high fat content and superior physical properties. The product is made by immersing feed pellets in a first hot oil bath with a temperature higher than 100.degree. C. to secure drying of and simultaneous fat absorbtion. This treatment is followed by a cooling in a warm oil bath kept at a temperature of 40.degree.-60.degree. C. This completes the fat absorbtion and results in a dry product consisting of hard and smooth particles with high fat content, which are free flowing and do not agglomerate.

  • Patent number: 5851320
Abstract: An improved aluminum alloy containing specific additions of silicon and copper to improve wear resistance and improve solutionizing of the alloying constituents, and a process for forming a wear-resistant component from the alloy. The improved aluminum alloy is also characterized by good strength and sufficient ductility so as to permit forging of a wear-resistant component from the alloy. A preferred composition for the alloy, in weight percent, is about 13.0 to about 15.5 percent silicon; about 0.8 to about 2.0 percent copper; about 0.8 to about 1.3 percent magnesium, and the balance being aluminum and impurities. The aluminum alloy is particularly well suited to form pistons of the type used in compressors of automotive air conditioning systems.

  • Patent number: 5839776
Abstract: A structural assembly at a front or rear of a vehicle frame includes a longitudinal member extending in a longitudinal direction of the frame. The longitudinal member has a part that extends at an angle to such longitudinal direction. A transverse member extends transversely of the longitudinally direction and includes a straight central part and an end part extending at an angle to the straight central part and at an angle to the longitudinal direction of the frame that is substantially equal to the angle of the part of the longitudinal member. The part of the longitudinal member and the end part of the transverse member are aligned and joined to form a nested joint that extends at the angle to the longitudinal direction of the frame. A side member extends in the longitudinal direction of the frame, and the nested joint is joined to the side member, thus forming a triple joint connection between the longitudinal, transverse and side members.

  • Patent number: 5761810
Abstract: A method and tool for installing a baffle in a tubular member, such as a heat exchanger manifold. The method and tool are adapted to use a baffle having a closed base that acts to obstruct the flow of a fluid within the tubular member, and further having a sidewall extending axially from the perimeter of the base so as to form a recess in the baffle. The tool is generally composed of a sleeve having an elastically and radially deformable end, such as a number of cantilevered members adapted to be elastically bent radially outward. Radially outward deformation of the sleeve enables the sleeve to securely grip the baffle, maintain the orientation of the baffle during its insertion into the tubular member, and then plastically deform the sidewalls of the baffle in order to secure the baffle to the wall of the tubular member.

  • Patent number: 5759027
Abstract: A ring section furnace for the calcination of carbon bodies, has a number of chambers (K1-Kn) in which the carbon bodies are placed when performing the calcination process. During the calcination process, a part of the furnace comprising a minor number of chambers is divided into a preheating zone (K3-K2), a combustion zone (K7-K14), and a cooling zone (K8-K10) that together in a successive manner, are advanced relative to the furnace. Flue gases formed under the process are sucked out from the first chamber (K2) in the preheating zone through a pipe connection to a common ring duct (10). To eliminate the entrance of false air from the first chamber (K1) adjacent the preheating zone, a counterpressure fan (17) is arranged in connection with the first chamber (K1).

  • Patent number: 5722529
Abstract: A discharge device has an inner tube having an inside and a longitudinal axis. The inner tube is rotatable about the longitudinal axis. A plurality of material inlet openings are distributed along the periphery and length of the inner tube, and a material outlet is at one end. A helical screw flight is attached to the inside of the inner tube for the feed of material from the material inlet openings to the material outlet opening. An outer telescopic tube is disposed around the inner tube, the outer telescopic tube having a plurality of slots therein and being rotatable on the inner tube. The slots, together with the material inlet openings of the inner tube, form inlets for material to enter the inner tube and be fed by the helical screw. • Patent number: 5686647
Abstract: Process for the preparation of urea, wherein in a first step ammonia and carbon dioxide react in suitable conditions so as to form a first mixture containing a quantity of urea, wherein in one or more subsequent steps ammonia and carbon dioxide are removed from the first mixture and the obtained urea is concentrated until a urea concentration has been reached suitable to be granulated in a gas stream, whereby apart from urea granules a second mixture containing air, gaseous ammonia and urea dust is formed which subsequently is washed, and wherein before or during the washing an amount of formaldehyde is added to the second mixture of air, ammonia and urea under circumstances wherein the ammonia can react with the formaldehyde in order to form hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) whereupon the so formed HMTA is separated from the gas stream and is returned into the process before the granulation step.
