Patents Assigned to Orcon Corporation
  • Patent number: 5277957
Abstract: The invention provides a reinforced film or reinforced metallized film, in which the reinforcing yarns in the fill and/or warp direction are coated with hot melt adhesive and placed in contact with the reinforced film, under heat and pressure, to melt the hot melt adhesive and bond the coated yarns to the film.

  • Patent number: 5236761
Abstract: The invention provides a substantially flat film or metallized film, reinforced with regularly spaced reinforcing yarns in the fill and warp direction having a residual shrinkage of less than about 2.0%, which is dimensionally stable over a wide range of temperatures, along with a process for producing the same. Synthetic reinforcing yarns, including nylon yarns, can be preshrunk by heating the spooled yarn in an inert atmosphere for a sufficient period of time to reduce the residual shrinkage in the spooled yarn to less than about 2.0%. This preshrunk yarn can then be bonded to a film or metallized film substrate using a wide variety of adhesives, including hot melt adhesives, or water-based adhesives cured by application of heat. Because the residual shrinkage in the reinforcing fibers has been reduced, subsequent application of heat during manufacturing processes, or in the use environment, will not produce the curling or puckering of the film or separation of the metal layer.

  • Patent number: 5209148
Abstract: An "S" shaped, double-blade carpet cutter is provided which simultaneously cuts the edges of two adjacent, overlapped carpets from the back side, to provide closely matching, abutting edges which can thereafter be seamed. The lower carpet edge is inserted into one opening of the "S", and the overlapping edge of the upper carpet is inserted into the other opening of the "S". One blade is mounted on the first or top arm of the "S" and the other blade is mounted on the second or middle arm of the "S", and the blades extend perpendicularly out of the plane of the "S" and are aligned to cut along a single seam line. A handle is attached to the third arm of the "S" to allow the cutter to be pulled along the overlapped carpet edges.

  • Patent number: 5108821
Abstract: A self-extinguishing blanket comprises an insulating layer of glass fiber strands which include air spaces within the layer. Each surface of the layer has a bi-directional strand reinforced plastic film which extends continuously along the surface for keeping moisture out of the layer. Each plastic film is attached to the associated surface of the insulation layer by non-contiguous, longitudinally and laterally spaced apart areas of a thermoplastic adhesive. The adhesive areas provide attachment between the strand reinforcement and the layer of glass fiber strands. Each area of adhesive attachment provides sufficient retention to prevent shifting of the film during the sewing together of peripheral edge portions of the sandwiched plastic films and inner insulation layer as required to produce a selected, peripheral configuration of a blanket package.

  • Patent number: 5104475
Abstract: A novel carpet seaming tape and method for use in glue down carpet installations is provided. A carpet seaming tape having a paper carrier with a hot melt adhesive on its top surface and a pressure sensitive adhesive on its bottom surface is aligned beneath the abutting edges of two pieces of carpeting to be seamed, with the hot melt adhesive on top. The tape is attached to the floor using the pressure sensitive adhesive, the carpet pieces are removed and the floor is coated with general purpose adhesive everywhere except in those areas where the seaming tape has been attached. The carpet is replaced and realigned, and seaming is completed by using a seaming iron to melt the hot melt adhesive and pushing the edges of the carpeting pieces into the molten adhesive atop the carpet seaming tape so that the edges of the carpet closely abut each other.

  • Patent number: 5078527
Abstract: An adhesive applicator is provided for applying liquid adhesive to the edge of thin, stiff material such as abutting edges of carpet. The adhesive applicator includes a liquid adhesive reservoir to which is attached an applicator cap having a vertical and horizontal guide surface, and an adhesive orifice located on the vertical surface at a predetermined height above the horizontal surface to deliver liquid adhesive at a predetermined distance above the horizontal surface. In use, the applicator is inverted, the material having an edge on which adhesive is to be applied is aligned so that the bottom of the material rests on the horizontal guide surface and the edge abuts the vertical guide surface, and the applicator cap is moved along the edge maintaining this alignment. The applicator cap can also include a captive closure cap for closing and opening the orifice as desired.

  • Patent number: 4714514
Abstract: A baseplate for a carpet seaming iron of the kind used for making a face seam with hot melt adhesive tape has the underside of the base plate formed with a forward, flat surface and a rearward, ribbed surface. The underside also has a longitudinally extending center groove shaped to form a raised bead of molten adhesive at the outlet end of the iron for coating the side edges of the carpet backings with hot melt adhesive. The forward, flat surface provides maximum contact for heating of the hot melt adhesive; and the rearward, ribbed surface meters the molten adhesive evenly over the full width of the tape. The forward ends of the ribs are longitudinally offset so as to form a V shape which helps to funnel molten adhesive both into the channels between the ribs and into the center groove at the apex of the V as the iron is moved along the tape.

  • Patent number: 4536244
Abstract: A carpet seaming iron of the kind used for making face seams with hot melt adhesive tapes forms a raised center bead in the molten adhesive produced behind the iron. The center bead is of a sufficient height and stiffness to coat the side edges of the carpet backings with hot melt adhesive as the undersides of the carpet backings are lowered onto the layer of molten adhesive. The side edges of the backings are locked directly together through the adhesive interposed between the side edges.

  • Patent number: 4439904
Abstract: A carpet seaming roller tool for drawing two sections of carpet together in a hot melt adhesive seaming operation has two, separate, cleated rollers which are disposed side-by-side so that one roller grips one section of carpet and the other roller grips the other section of carpet as the roller tool is rolled back and forth along the seam during the seaming operation. Each roller has an axle which is mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis in its own support frame, and each support frame is mounted for a limited amount of pivotal, swinging movement (about a generally vertical axis) in a main frame associated with the handle of the carpet seaming roller tool.
