Patent number: 7817699Abstract: A laser device includes an optical resonator, a microwave driven discharge device, and a source for a second gas. The microwave driven discharge device is disposed relative to the optical resonator. The microwave driven discharge device operates at a discharge power and gas flow rate to produce a selected amount of energetic singlet oxygen metastables flowing in the direction of the optical resonator. The second source for the second gas is disposed between the optical resonator and the microwave driven discharge device. The second gas reacts with the selected amount of energetic singlet oxygen metastables to form an excited species in an amount sufficient to support lasing of the excited species in the optical resonator.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2008Date of Patent: October 19, 2010Assignee: Physical Sciences, Inc.Inventors: W. Patent number: 7790135Abstract: The present invention is directed to the production of nanostructures, e.g., single wall carbon nanotubes (“SWNT”) and/or multi-wall carbon nanotubes (“MWNT”), from solutions containing a polymer, such as polyacrylonitrile (PAN). In particular, the invention is directed to the production of nanostructures, for example, SWNT and/or MWNT, from mixtures, e.g., solutions, containing polyacrylonitrile, polyaniline emeraldine base (PANi) or a salt thereof, an iron salt, e.g., iron chloride, and a solvent. In one embodiment, a mixture containing polyacrylonitrile, polyaniline emeraldine base or a salt thereof, an iron salt, e.g., iron chloride, and a solvent is formed and the mixture is electrospun to form nanofibers. In another embodiment, the electrospun nanofibers are then oxidized, e.g., heated in air, and subsequently pyrolyzed to form carbon nanostructures.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2004Date of Patent: September 7, 2010Assignee: Physical Sciences, Inc.Inventor: John D. Patent number: 7581507Abstract: An embodiment of a launch/recovery device for both surface and underwater vehicles includes a plurality of driven wet-traction members arranged to form a low drag (e.g., water flow-through) ramp design. The wet-traction members provide traction even when wet between the water vehicle and the launch/recovery device. As a result of utilizing driven wet-traction members, the use of conventional hoists, special capture devices such as hooks and tow lines, and personnel located within the water to attach the capture devices to the water vehicle is eliminated. The wet-traction members provide both strength and flexibility to the launch/recovery device. That is, while the wet-traction members are strong enough to support the weight of the water vehicle, they are at the same time flexible enough to deflect a distance (e.g., about 6 to 15 inches) to accommodate a soft landing of the water vehicle on the ramp, while providing recovery forces and motion.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 2007Date of Patent: September 1, 2009Assignee: Physical Sciences, Inc.Inventor: Fred Robert Kern

Patent number: 7450234Abstract: A light scattering sensor is provided with a cylindrical lens focusing received light along substantially parallel lines, or bands, that correspond to a range of scattering angles and a linear detector that detects the light intensity along the substantially parallel lines. By using a cylindrical lens, the lens serves as an auto-collimator, whereby light scattered at a specific angle from the collimated light beam strikes the linear detector at a corresponding specific location regardless of the location from where the light was scattered. Embodiments of the cylindrical lens-based light sensor can be applied to a number of different applications and industries that analyze light scattering intensity as a function of scattering angle. For example, embodiments of the cylindrical lens-based light scattering sensor can be used for monitoring a target fluid for contaminants.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 2005Date of Patent: November 11, 2008Assignee: Physical Sciences, Inc.Inventors: Michael A.
