Abstract: A method for obtaining improved bone quality in a vertebrate, including mammal and bird, the method comprising administering to a vertebrate, including mammal and bird, in a sufficient amount and/or at a sufficient rate to enable a desired effect, glutamate, glutamate derivatives or metabolites, glutamate analogues or mixtures thereof. Also contemplated is a method for modulating bone quality in a vertebrate, including mammal and bird, comprising administering to the vertebrate, including mammal and bird, in the need thereof, glutamate, glutamate derivatives or metabolites, glutamate analogues or mixtures thereof, for modulating the bone quality as well as a compositions for use in treatment.

Abstract: There is provided a particle-filter comprising at least one hydrogel formed in aqueous solution at a temperature below 0° C. The filter can arrest particulates of smoke by physisorption on the solid surface of the gel or by chemisorption if the gel is suitably functionalized. The effectiveness of filter in arresting the solid particles and the pressure drop can be controlled by varying the porosity and the pore size distribution of the filter which in turn can be modulated by varying the monomer to water and monomer to cross-linker ratio in the pre-polymer solution. The filter is able to reduce the particle content of the smoke. There is further provided a cigarette comprising at least one particle-filter according as well as a method for the filtration of smoke.
Abstract: A process for adsorption-based separation of bioparticles from an aqueous suspension containing such bioparticles is disclosed which process comprises a) bringing said aqueous suspension into contact with a macroporous cryogel monolith carrying on its surface a ligand capable of interacting specifically or non-specifically with a receptor on the surface of a bioparticle to be separated to adsorb said bioparticle to said macroporous cryogen monolith; and b) liberating said bioparticle from said macroporous cryogel monolith by elution, wherein said macroporous cryogel monolith is subjected to a physical deformation in conjunction with exposure to eluting medium.

Abstract: A separation medium in macroporous gel form is disclosed which is obtainable by cooling an aqueous solution of at least one gel forming polymer to a temperature, at which the solvent in the system is partially frozen with the dissolved substances concentrated in the non-frozen fraction of the solvent, said gel forming polymer being selected from the group consisting of polymers normally forming gels too fast when an aqueous solution thereof is cooled to a temperature within a range below 0° C. to enable the formation of a cryogel and said cooling being carried out in the presence of at least one chaotropic agent in said aqueous solution in order to prevent gel formation before the polymer solution is frozen. The use of said separation medium for diverse separation purposes is also disclosed.
