  • Patent number: 7184954
Abstract: A speech signal is decoded by a vocoder and the reconstructed speech samples are provided to a decoded frame check unit. The decoded frame check unit examines the energy of the reconstructed speech and compares the energy of the reconstructed speech to a range of acceptable energy values. If the energy is not within the range of energy values, a frame erasure is declared and the decoded frame is prevented from being to the speaker in the telephone. In the exemplary implementation, the speech is reconstructed by a vocoder which includes a postfilter which in turn includes automatic gain control. The automatic gain control element of a post filter includes a means for measuring the energy of the decoded speech data. This measured energy is used by the decoded frame check unit to decide whether to provide the decoded data to the user or to declare a frame erasure. This implementation reduces the amount of additional hardware necessary to implement the present invention.

  • Patent number: 7174190
Abstract: A direct downconversion receiver architecture having a DC loop to remove DC offset from the signal components, a digital variable gain amplifier (DVGA) to provide a range of gains, an automatic gain control (AGC) loop to provide gain control for the DVGA and RF/analog circuitry, and a serial bus interface (SBI) unit to provide controls for the RF/analog circuitry via a serial bus. The DVGA may be advantageously designed and located as described herein. The operating mode of the VGA loop may be selected based on the operating mode of the DC loop, since these two loops interact with one another. The duration of time the DC loop is operated in an acquisition mode may be selected to be inversely proportional to the DC loop bandwidth in the acquisition mode. The controls for some or all of the RF/analog circuitry may be provided via the serial bus.

  • Patent number: 7170924
Abstract: Method and apparatus to compute the combiner coefficients for wireless communication systems using an adaptive algorithm. One embodiment trains the weights on a signal known a priori that is time multiplexed with other signals, such as a pilot signal in a High Data Rate, HDR, system, wherein the signal is transmitted at full power. The adaptive algorithm recursively computes the weights during the pilot interval and applies the weights generated to the traffic signals. In one embodiment, the algorithm is a recursive least squares algorithm employing a transversal filter and weight calculation unit.

  • Patent number: 7170876
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for dynamically adjusting parameters of an outer-loop algorithm, which is used to determine the feasibility of a transmission format. The parameters of the outer-loop algorithm are adjusted according to channel conditions. In one embodiment, an erasure-based approach is used to determine whether to incrementally increase or incrementally decrease a margin parameter in the outer-loop algorithm. Once one margin parameter is altered, other margin parameters can be adjusted accordingly.

  • Patent number: 7165099
Abstract: An applet requiring a virtual machine is downloaded to a wireless device. A software platform on the device determines that a virtual machine is used by the applet during execution. Without additional user interaction, the virtual machine is downloaded to the wireless device. This allows those applets requiring a virtual machine to be used with devices that don't have the virtual machine already installed. Further embodiments include the dynamic loading of a system service when an application is being loaded that uses the system service. A unique identifier associated with the system service may be used to determine if determine if the system service is loaded.

  • Patent number: 7158537
Abstract: The layers and protocols of an air interface layering architecture are designed to be modular and can be modified and upgraded to support new features, perform complex tasks, and implement additional functionality. Prior to commencement of data communication between a first entity (e.g., an access terminal) and a second entity (e.g., a radio network), a set of layers and/or protocols is selected for negotiation. For each selected layer and protocol (i.e., each attribute), a list of attribute values considered acceptable to the first entity is determined. The selected attributes and their associated attribute values are sent from the first entity and, in response, a list of processed attributes and their associated lists of processed attribute values are received. Each list of processed attribute values includes attribute values considered acceptable to the second entity.

  • Patent number: 7155222
Abstract: Techniques to reduce the amount of registration required by a mobile station in a wireless communication system, especially if the registration zones are defined to be small areas. In one scheme, a mobile station registers (e.g., at RR-level) with a network entity (e.g., a base station) each time it enters a new registration zone, which can correspond to an R-TMSI zone defined by GSM MC-MAP. The mobile station maintains a timer for each zone with which it has already registered but has since left. If the mobile station leaves a particular zone for a period longer than a time-out period, the registration with that zone times out, and the mobile station re-registers with that zone whenever it re-enters the zone. The mobile station may implement zone-based, timer-based, implicit, traffic channel RR, and some other registrations, or a combination thereof. Parameters to facilitate registration may be defined by a base station.

  • Patent number: 7133222
Abstract: The described embodiments provide devices and methods for securing a lens member in a mobile electronic device. The lens member is positionable between a front housing and a rear housing of the device such that inner surfaces of the housings both exert a biasing force on the lens member such that the lens member is substantially immovable relative to the inner surfaces. As such, the lens member is securely fixed within the housings and cannot be removed or separated from one or both housings without evidence of tampering.

  • Patent number: 7130334
Abstract: The present invention includes a cellular pilot signal detector or searcher for use in a cellular mobile communications unit. The signal detector uses a matched filter to detect a pilot signal transmitted from a cellular base station. The matched filter includes a plurality of taps and a plurality of delays located between adjacent taps. The signal components of a received digital signal are held on the taps of the matched filter by the delays. The matched filter compares the signal components of the received signal to an expected or searched for digital pattern. The matched filter puts out a relatively large signal if the received digital signal matches the expected digital pattern. The matched filter can also be used in parallel with a correlator.
