Publication number: 20130284560Abstract: An asymmetric article-carrying puck is driven by a linear star conveyor through an angular rotation orienting section to orient the pucks and articles therein irrespective of random initial orientation. In one embodiment, an upper puck plate carries the article while a separated lower puck plate defines a rotational orienting circular gear rack with a rotation-stopping bridge, separating ends of the rack and inclined from a base of one end tooth in the rack to a crest of another end tooth in the rack. The lower puck plate can be a combination of two circular plates with the circular gear rack interposed therebetween and within the periphery of the circular plates. Pucks can be accumulated in mutual engaged positions and separated by the linear star into preselected pitch while transported and turned. Integral pucks can be used. The structural details and methods are disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 29, 2013Publication date: October 31, 2013Applicant: R. A. Jones & Co. Inc.Inventors: Matthew R. Patent number: 7766153Abstract: Trays are indexed at predetermined pitch on a tray conveyor. As the trays are conveyed, a turning guide engages a leading tray portion, turning the tray and urging it transversely downward and/or into buckets on an adjacent bucket conveyor or cartons on an adjacent carton conveyor. A cam is disposed rearward of each tray on the tray conveyors and the turning trays pivot about that cam. A hold-down prevents trays climbing over the turning guide. Pressure relief and tray indexing are provided upstream of the tray conveyor. Apparatus and methods are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2008Date of Patent: August 3, 2010Assignee: R.A. Publication number: 20100064633Abstract: An improved carton feed drive includes feed dog drives for delivering carton blanks to transport lugs of a carton. Components of the feed dog drives are inclined to the vertical, providing ability to handle very short depth cartons by operating feed dogs in an operative run closely adjacent the transport lugs while the feed dog drives are inclined away from the transport lug drives so the respective drives to not interfere in any way to unduly limit the ability to handle short depth cartons. Feed dogs are selectively pivoted on their drives to positions for operative engagement of cartons, and are releasable to retracted positions to avoid carton damage as the dogs move to a return run.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 6, 2009Publication date: March 18, 2010Applicant: R.A. Publication number: 20070289255Abstract: An apparatus for transferring and reorienting an item for packaging into a carton includes a body having a first end and a second end and a channel formed in the body. The channel defines a channel axis extending between the first and second ends and is configured to receive the item at the first end when the item is in a first angular orientation. The channel is configured to deliver the item at the second end in a second angular orientation relative to the channel axis that is different from the first angular orientation. The channel may include a helical groove extending between the first and second ends and formed in a wall of the channel which operates as a track for rotating the item as it moves between the first and second ends. A method of packaging an item includes transporting an item through the apparatus so as to orient the item relative to the carton.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 8, 2007Publication date: December 20, 2007Applicant: R.A.
