  • Patent number: 8436388
Abstract: Illumination assemblies, components, and related methods are described. An illumination assembly can include at least one solid state light-emitting device, an emission surface through which light is emitted, and a wavelength converting material that wavelength converts at least some light emitted by the solid state light-emitting device. The wavelength converting material can have a first density per unit area of the emission surface at a first location and a second density per unit area of the emission surface at a second location, wherein the second density is substantially different from the first density, and wherein the density per unit area is defined with a 1×1 cm2 averaging area. Another illumination assembly can include a light guide configured to receive light emitted by a solid state light-emitting device. The light guide can have a length along which received light propagates and an emission surface substantially parallel to the length of the light guide and through which light is emitted.

  • Publication number: 20130100664
Abstract: An optical system is disclosed that uses an LED light source. The light output is coupled to an optic element formed from a material with a high refractive index. The coupling of the light to the high index material significantly reduces the cone angle of the light. The system is very efficient in that nearly all the light generated by the LED is directed to the intended subject.

  • Patent number: 8395843
Abstract: An array of light valves switch light by enabling and disabling total internal reflection (TIR) on a surface of the light valve. The disabling of the TIR is accomplished by putting another optical element in contact with the surface and then diffusing or changing the direction of the light. The mechanical mechanism to move the optical element is a simple one in that it only moves the optical element a small distance to change the valve from a first position to a second position.

  • Patent number: 8322905
Abstract: A light emitting assembly comprises a light source and a light emitting panel member having a panel surface and an input edge for receiving light from the light source. On or in the panel surface is a pattern of individual light extracting deformities. At least some of the deformities have only two surfaces, each having opposite peripheral edge portions that intersect each other and intersect the panel surface. One of the surfaces of the deformities is substantially perpendicular to the panel surface and is curved in a transverse direction. The other surface of the deformities is a sloping surface.

  • Patent number: 8308334
Abstract: A light emitting assembly comprises a plurality of light sources and a solid light emitting panel member having a light input edge and a transition area between the light sources and the light input edge. Light from the light sources enters the transition area and mixes within the transition area prior to entering the panel member. Refractive surfaces on the transition area redirect the light into the panel member. A film is maintained in spaced relation from the panel member by spacers at a perimeter of the film to form a hollow layer between the panel member and the film. Deformities on or in the panel member cause light to be extracted from the panel member and pass through the hollow layer and out through the film.

  • Patent number: 8297818
Abstract: An optical system utilizing a light pipe in which light travels by total internal reflection (TIR) accurately controls the light exiting the pipe. The system achieves accurate control of the reflected light by selectively extracting light from a limited area of the light pipe. The configuration of the reflectors used for the selective extraction of the light determines the nature of the output light. The reflectors are preferably located on an output side of the light pipe. All light output by the system is directed by the reflectors.

  • Patent number: 8272770
Abstract: A flat panel display uses pixels that are turned on or off by the enabling or disabling total internal reflection, TIR, of a light guide. A reflective surface directs the switched light towards the viewer. An optional mask can be employed to provide extremely high contrast ratios in low and in high ambient lighting conditions. The elements that enable TIR can be enabled quickly because of their small size and weight, resulting in a very fast switching speed. The fast switching speed allows colors to be generated and displayed in a sequential manner.

  • Patent number: 8215816
Abstract: A light emitting assembly comprises a light source, a light emitting panel member having an input edge that receives light from the light source, and end edge and side edge reflectors. The panel member is received in a cavity or recess of a tray or housing. An additional component overlies the panel member. Light extracting deformities on or in a surface of the panel member cause light to be emitted from the panel member.

  • Patent number: 8152318
Abstract: An optical system with an LED light source utilizes a base with an inverted conical shape to conduct light to a phosphor layer. The phosphor layer emits light from both upper and lower surfaces. The base and a substantially mirror image cap element facilitate efficient extraction of the phosphor-generated light from the optical system so that the output of the system is omni-directional light suitable for common lighting applications. The system is very efficient in that nearly all the light generated by the LED is transmitted to the phosphor layer, and nearly all the light emitted from the phosphor layer is output from the system.
