  • Patent number: 5712395
Abstract: The present invention relates to organic molecules capable of modulating tyrosine kinase signal transduction and particularly KDR/FLK-1 receptor signal transduction in order to regulate and/or modulate vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. The invention is based, in part, on the demonstration that KDR/FLK-1 tyrosine kinase receptor expression is associated with endothelial cells and the identification of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) as the high affinity ligand of FLK-1. These results indicate a major role for KDR/FLK-1 in the signaling system during vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. Engineering of host cells that express FLK-1 and the uses of expressed FLK-1 to evaluate and screen for drugs and analogs of VEGF involved in FLK-1 modulation by either agonist or antagonist activities is also described.

  • Patent number: 5707807
Abstract: This invention relates to a method for classifying (indexing) cDNA which has been reverse-transcribed from tissue- or cell-derived RNA, or DNA in a short period without duplication by using class-IIS restriction enzymes or a combination of a class-IIS and a class-II restriction enzymes. According to this invention, it is possible to analyse and diagnose variations such as tumors easily, correctly and promptly by comparing the analyzed pattern of genes expressed in a cell or tissue sample with the analyzed pattern of normal genes. This method is also applicable to the search and isolation of genes of physiologically active substances that are potential pharmaceuticals or causative genes of hereditary diseases, as well as the isolation of those genes that are useful for improving agricultural products.

  • Patent number: 5704974
Abstract: When a Si single crystal 8 is pulled up from a melt 6 received in a crucible 2, the state of eddy flows generated in the melt 6 is judged from the temperature distribution of the melt at the surface. According to the result of judgement, the gas, i.e. N.sub.2, Xe or Kr, which causes extraoridnary deviation in the density of a melt 6 is added to an atmospheric gas, so as to keep the eddy flows under unstabilized condition. The effect of said gas is typical in the case of crystal growth from the melt to which a dopant such as Ca, Sb, Al, As or In having the effect to suppress the extraordinary deviation in the density is added. Since the single crystal is pulled up from the melt held in the temperature-controlled condition at the surface, impurity distribution and oxygen distribution are made uniform along the direction of crystal growth. A single crystal obtained in this way has highly-stabilized quality.

  • Patent number: 5701879
Abstract: An air compressed gun (10) is provided having a stock (11), a barrel (12), a pressure chamber (16), a pressure actuatable release valve (18) and a manual air pump (14). The pump has an elongated cylinder (25) having a port (38) in fluid communication with the release valve, and a plunger (26) telescopically mounted for reciprocal movement within the cylinder. The plunger has an O-ring type seal (31). The forward movement of the plunger seal towards the port pressurizes air within the cylinder which is transferred to the release valve and pressure chamber. The continued movement of the plunger seal past the port causes a portion of the pressurized air to be released so as to actuate the pressure actuatable release valve to release the pressurized air within the pressure chamber into the barrel.
