Abstract: A method for installing a locking nut or bolt includes drilling a bore having at least two diameters in a surface of an element so as to accommodate a fastener assembly having a threaded shaft and a group of elements including a cylinder a locking ring, two retaining rings and a conical spring, serrating an area of the bore having the layer diameter, screwing the fastener assembly into the bore, applying a torque to the group of elements while suppressing the locking ring thereby engaging the locking ring into the serrated area of the bore, retracting an outer sleeve of the tool and tightening the group of elements.
Abstract: A power-driven insertion tool for a helically coiled wire insert of the type used for tapped holes in parent material that is generally softer than a fastener being screwed into the tapped hole, whereby a mandrel having a threaded lead portion and a pivotal pawl inserted in a groove below the threaded portion so that the pawl engages a recess of the insert, in order that the insert may be screwed into the tapped hole. A sleeve, concentric to the threaded mandrel, maintains the insert's helix angle for a smooth transition into the tapped hole. An adjusting nut adjusts the depth to which an insert may be installed and whereby a free spinning bearing contacts the parent material and automatically reverses the torque of the tool.

Abstract: A stud assembly, for securing a nonstructural decorative panel to the interior of an aircraft, includes a threaded shank fixed to one side of a flat base, the peripheral area of the opposite side of the base being joined to the peripheral area of a flat disc, the opposite side of the flat disc having an adhesive applied thereto, so that, when a nut is tightened on the shank to its proper torque level, the tensile force in the shank allows a dimpling effect in the flat base but not in the flat disc or the panel.
Abstract: The present invention provides a splice for high tension belts in which the ends of the belt are curved at about right angles to the belt. Plates are placed on the outside of the two belt ends, spacer bushings are placed between the plates and through apertures in the belt ends, bolts are placed through holes in the two plates and through the spacer bushings, and the bolts are tightened, causing the plates to press against the spacer bushings. The bolts are pretensioned by tightening them to a predetermined tension which is higher than the tension experienced during operation.
Abstract: A method for measuring the weight of material carried by a moving conveyor belt at an angle to the horizontal and passing over a belt scale, and a method for calibrating the belt scale under actual field conditions using previously determined calibration curves.
Abstract: A crusher of the conical type has a spherical bearing arrangement for supporting the head assembly on a stationary shaft. Included are tramp release means for automatically opening the crusher throat when tramp material is encountered and for jacking open the throat under nonoperating conditions.
Abstract: An endless path conveyor of the type used for luggage handling, having crescent shaped pallets connected one to the next through pivotal connecting pins by offset link arms. The pivotal connecting pins have a cam follower which engages a helical groove in a drive screw located beneath the conveying surface. The cam follower is maintained in secure contact with the driving groove of the helical screw by limiting cam rollers, eliminating sideways movements of the pallets during engagement or disengagement of the cam follower with the helical screw drive. The driving groove has enlarged portions at either end to eliminate bumping motion of the conveyor links. The axis of the conveyor and of the links are offset from one another to minimize the gap formed when travelling through curved sections, allowing the maximum amount of conveying surface possible. Bearing and guide means are provided for a smoother, quiet drive, and to prevent tilting or inward collapse of the pallet links under heavy load.
Abstract: A chain link assembly comprising a pair of inner sidebar portions, each of the inner sidebar portions defining an aperture. A tubular-shaped bushing is secured to the pair of inner sidebar portions. The bushing includes a central portion and integral bushing extensions at each end of the central portion. The central portion of the bushing extends between the inner sidebar portions and into the apertures, and the bushing extensions project beyond the inner sidebar portions. The inside diameter of the bushing at any point along the bushing extensions is larger than the smallest inside diameter of the central portion.
Abstract: A hydraulic gun for installing inserts in which the hydraulic mechanism becomes inoperative after the mandrel of the gun travels a predetermined distance. The gun includes a means for adjusting the predetermined distance of mandrel movement.
Abstract: A vertical media bed dust collector in which the media bed of a filter panel is rejuvenated when necessary by interrupting the gas flow through the panel, withdrawing the filter media from the panel, separating the agglomerated dust from the filter media, returning the filter media to the filter panel, and reestablishing the gas flow through the panel. The system further includes apparatus for removing collected dust from the separating and recirculating surfaces of the media handling apparatus and also from the remote face of the filter panels before the cleaned gas is allowed to pass out of the collector so that the cleaned gas is not recontaminated by small amounts of dust adhering to those surfaces.
Abstract: A flight for a chain which has sidebars, comprising a side portion adapted to lie against the outer surface of one sidebar of a chain link. A lip is attached to one end of the side portion and includes a lip portion adapted to contact the inner surface of the sidebar.
Abstract: The present invention provides a chain link for use with a fingered transfer plate. The link comprises a base portion and a raised portion integral with and supported by the base portion. The raised portion includes a plurality of coplanar fork-shaped members, each of the fork-shaped members comprising two prongs and a stem, wherein the prongs of each fork-shaped member are parallel to each other and the width of the stem is less than the distance between the prongs, the fork-shaped members being arranged in a regularly spaced row.

Abstract: An article carrying conveyor chain includes a series of links having parts which slide on flat, spaced supporting rails which also provide the chain with lateral guidance. The link parts engaging the rails are an injection molded thermoplastic having dispersed throughout small particles of a low-friction material such that the exposed portions of the particles provide a dry film lubricant which, as the chain is used, becomes distributed over all of the several surfaces having frictional engagement with the supported articles and with rails. Where the entire link is of integral molded construction, the bearing surface of the link with the connecting pin is thus also provided with the dry film lubricant.

Abstract: A stud assembly, for securing a nonstructural decorative panel to the interior of an aircraft, includes a threaded shank fixed to one side a flat base, the opposite side of the base having an adhesive applied in a donut fashion, so that, when a nut is tightened on the shank to its proper torque level, the tensile force in the shank allows a dimpling effect in the base but not in the panel.
Abstract: A carrier roller for use in a conveyor chain, including a bushing adapted to be mounted on a shaft. A resilient roller tire, having a tread, is rotatably mounted over the bushing. A load-limiting annular disk is rotatably mounted over the bushing adjacent the resilient roller tire and includes means for limiting the amount of radial load to be supported by the resilient roller tire.
Abstract: A method of securing a bearing either bushing, roller or ball bearing and a spacer or fitting into a soft non-ferrous material such as aluminum and materials of that hardness. A bearing of this invention containing an annular groove and adjacent forming shoulder or spacer, at least 1/2 a millimeter greater in diameter than the body of the bushing is inserted into a predrilled hole. A metal ring is formed in the annular groove as the shoulder is pressed into the parent material. This metal ring being a part of the parent material and being packed into the annular groove prevents retraction of the bearing or spacer during operation by its diameter being greater than the annular groove in the bearing. The material in the annular groove is of a lesser diameter than the body of the bearing and fitting and interfers with axial movement. The shoulder of the bearing or fitting has longitudinal grooves around its circumference.
Abstract: A flexible coupling comprising first and second hubs and a center member aligned on a longitudinal axis. At least one spool is also aligned on said axis. There is a plurality of discs forming at least three flexible joints between the hubs, center member and spool, wherein no more than two of the flexible joints permit both axial and angular misalignment, the remainder of the flexible joints including piloting means for eliminating angular misalignment while permitting axial misalignment.
