Abstract: The rare earth metals, or alloys thereof, are prepared in high yields in a specially designed electrolytic cell, by electrolyzing a melt comprising (i) at least one chloride of at least one rare earth, or at least one such chloride and at least one chloride of at least one transition metal, (ii) at least one alkali or alkaline earth metal chloride, and (iii) at least one alkali or alkaline earth metal fluoride.
Abstract: Silica colloids having a spherical form, a mean diameter of between about 10 and 100 nm and a polydispersity index between about 1 and 4. A process for making silica colloids is also provided comprising a) forming a reaction medium by simultaneously adding an acidifying agent and an alkaline silicate solution to a reaction vessel, b) reacting the acidifying agent and alkaline silicate solution, and c) maintaining a constant volume of the reaction medium by drawing off the reaction medium.
Abstract: Polyamide-based molding compositions having enhanced flexibility and resilience, especially at low temperatures, are prepared from (1) semirigid copolyamides prepared from fatty acid dimers, (2) elastomers containing moieties compatible or reactive with such copolyamides (1) and comprising olefinic copolymers bearing carboxyl and/or carboxylate groups, copolyester-amides, polyurethanes, organopolysiloxane and polyurethane block copolymers, and copolymers produced from a latex which comprises suitable functional groups, and, optionally, (3) conventional polyamides.
Abstract: Rare earth hydroxides are recovered from the rare earth ores, e.g., monazite, xenotime and/or bastnasite, by treating the ore with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, under agitation and essentially constant pressure, at a temperature of from about 100.degree. to 220.degree. C., and wherein the ratio by weight of alkali metal hydroxide/ore ranges from about 1.4 to 0.5, e.g., a weight ratio of sodium hydroxide/ore of from about 1 to 0.5, or a weight ratio of potassium hydroxide/ore of from about 1.4 to 0.7.

Abstract: The invention provides concentrated suspensions of high molecular weight water soluble polymers comprising a high molecular weight water soluble polymer, a nonpolymer solvating organic diluent, a swelling agent and a low molecular weight polymer adjuvant, soluble in water and having functional carboxylic acid (or salt) groups thereon and methods for preparing same and the use thereof in the preparation of dilute aqueous thickening solutions suitable for use in various industrial applications, including the petroleum industry and, in particular, the secondary recovery of petroleum from underground well deposits in oil fields.
Abstract: Stable oil-in-water emulsions are prepared containing a relatively high concentration of from 8 to 60% by weight of a heteropolysaccharide bipolymer, e.g., xanthan gum preferably, the emulsions contain greater than 15 up to 60% biopolymer, 40 to 99 parts of an aqueous phase containing 10 to 60% by weight biopolymer and 40% to 90% by weight water, 1 to 60 parts oil and 1 to 40% with respect to the aqueous phase and oil of a surface active agent. The emulsions are prepared by combining powdered biopolymer with water, oil and surfactant or by concentrating an oil-in-water emulsion containing the biopolymer such as by ultrafiltration. A fermentation wort containing the biopolymer may be used in preparing the emulsion.

Abstract: Zeolites of type ZSM-5, well suited as absorbents/catalysts, are facilely prepared by (i) intimately admixing a source of alumina with a source of silica, in aqueous reaction medium having a pH ranging from 1 to 7 and wherein the molar ratio SiO.sub.2 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 ranges from 5 to 100, (ii) adding a source of alkali metal oxide to the reaction mixture resulting from said stage (i), said combined reaction mixture having a pH ranging from 8 to 12, and thence (iii) crystallizing a zeolite of type ZSM-5 therefrom.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of ethyltrifluoroacetoacetate is provided. In this first step, ethyltrifluoroacetate is condensed with ethyl acetate in the presence of sodium ethoxide in cyclohexane. In a second step, the condensation product is neutralized with a protonic acid, such as formic acid, to release an enol. In the third step, the ethyltrifluoroacetoacetate obtained is separated by distillation. The ethyltrifluoroacetoacetate is used as an intermediate in syntheses in the pharmaceutical or plant protection industry.
Abstract: Phenolic compounds and mixtures thereof, e.g., admixture of 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,6-dichlorophenol, are selectively chlorinated at a position ortho to a hydroxyl function thereof, by reacting such phenolic compound with gaseous chlorine, in a molten reaction medium, in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of a primary, secondary or tertiary amine.
Abstract: Precipitation silicas, in the form of aggregates as shown in FIG. 1, having a mean projected area of the aggregates which is higher than about 8,000 nm.sup.2 and preferably is higher than about 15,000 nm.sup.2. The present invention also concerns a process for the production of precipitation silica by maintaining a constant-volume reaction medium to provide suitable colloids of silica, reacting the colloids with an electrolyte and consolidating the resulting product by the addition of a solution of silicate and an acidifying agent to obtain a precipitation silica.
Abstract: Novel deacetylated polysaccharide biopolymers having improved viscosity/filtrability/injectability, well adopted for the secondary and tertiary recovery of oil deposits, are conveniently prepared by (i) acidifying an aqueous polysaccharide composition, e.g., a carbohydrate fermentation broth, with nitric acid to a pH of from about 2 to 0.1, (ii) heat-treating said acidified composition at a temperature of from about 50.degree. to 100.degree. C. for from about 5 to 60 minutes, and (iii) cooling said heat-treated composition and adjusting the pH thereof to a value of from about 5 to 7.

Abstract: A process for treating a polysilazane, characterized in that a polysilazane possessing on average at least two, and preferably at least three, hydrocarbon groups having aliphatic unsaturation per molecule is treated catalytically in the presence of a catalytically efficient amount of a co-ordination catalyst. The polysilazanes treated in this manner possess high thermal resistance and can be used, in particular, as precursors of ceramic products, with a high yield of inorganic product.
