Patent number: 4341482Abstract: A housing assembly for a writing instrument is provided comprising a long, hollow barrel member and a ferrule member assembled in end-to-end relationship to afford an inner chamber for a reservoir of marking fluid. A writing nib projects from the ferrule and extends into the reservoir. The ferrule member and the barrel member have adjacent skirt portions in telescoping assembled relation, the skirt portions, when moved longitudinally one into the other, afford latching means, sealing means and means for constraining relative rotation between the assembled ferrule member and the barrel member, thereby providing a securely sealed and easily assembled housing for a writing instrumemt.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1980Date of Patent: July 27, 1982Assignee: Sanford Research CompanyInventor: Daniel W. Wollensak

Patent number: 4341481Abstract: A housing assembly for a writing instrument is provided comprising a long, hollow barrel member and a ferrule member assembled in end-to-end relationship to afford an inner chamber for a reservoir of marking fluid. A writing nib projects from the ferrule and extends into the reservoir. The ferrule member and the barrel member have adjacent skirt portions in telescoping assembled relation for normally mechanically urging the ferrule and barrel together in axial alignment. Additionally, the skirt portions, when moved longitudinally one into the other, afford fastening means, sealing means and means for constraining relative rotation between the assembled ferrule member and the barrel member thereby providing a securely sealed and easily assembled housing for a writing instrument.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1980Date of Patent: July 27, 1982Assignee: Sanford Research CompanyInventor: Daniel W. Patent number: 4238162Abstract: A nib retaining assembly for a writing instrument to hold a capillary writing element or nib of small cross-sectional dimension in position against writing pressure, the nib retaining assembly including a nib receiving main longitudinal passageway formed by offset portions through which the capillary element extends. The capillary element is held by light staking within an axial bore of a nib holder which, in turn, is inserted into a seat at one end of the passageway. Because of the passageway offset portions and an intermediate camming surface, a capillary element inserted into the passageway is deflected around an internal shoulder so as to be forced into frictional engagement with the passageway walls to hold the small nib in writing position without disturbing the capillary action. In one embodiment of the invention, the passageway is defined by a nib retaining adapter inserted into a seat in the barrel; while in another embodiment the passageway is defined by the tubular barrel of the instrument.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1978Date of Patent: December 9, 1980Assignee: Sanford Research CompanyInventor: Edward E. Patent number: 4061415Abstract: There are disclosed radiation deflection method and means for controlling the direction of travel of radiation which is subject to refraction, such as light and sound radiation. The deflection method and means, which are particularly adapted for effecting a scanning motion of the radiation in one direction, include first and second generally counterrotating refracting wedges through which the radiation passes. The second wedge is mounted for rotation about a fixed axis and the first wedge is mounted for rotation about an axis which nutates about the fixed axis of rotation of the second wedge. Means are provided for rotating the first and second wedges in opposite rotary directions at equal angular displacements while simultaneously nutating said first wedge.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 1976Date of Patent: December 6, 1977Assignee: Sanford Research InstituteInventor: Jon C. Patent number: 3934255Abstract: A recorder pen having a tube or cartridge with a closed chamber and an integrally formed sleeve for supporting a linear fiber nib in writing position therein. The chamber contains a dye solution impregnated fibrous material in engaging relationship with an angled end face on the nib. An end plug is forced into the open end of the tube or cartridge for sealing the chamber and for limited compacting of the fibrous material against the angled end of the nib. Integrally formed with the cartridge are a plurality of mating channel-shaped mounting members adapted to grip the arm of a recording instrument. Web means are formed across the opening of selected mounting members which web means are partially pierced by the arm end to accommodate narrower width arms. Ridges and lugs project into the opening through the channel-shaped members and between the channel-shaped members so as to engage the flat surface of the arm to accommodate for arms of thinner dimensions.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1974Date of Patent: January 20, 1976Assignee: Sanford Research CompanyInventor: Guy A.
