  • Patent number: 6426182
Abstract: A test device, method, and indicators for the colorimetric determination of formaldehyde neutralization in an aqueous solution initially containing formaldehyde are provided. Formaldehyde is neutralized by reaction with sulfite ion, where the sulfite ion is provided by dissolving a sulfite-containing compound or neutralizer, such as sodium sulfite, sodium bisulfite, or a mixture thereof, into the aqueous solution containing formaldehyde. The indicators may include dyes capable of exhibiting a color change in the presence of an excess amount of sulfite ion over the amount of formaldehyde in the aqueous solution. A test medium includes the dye, where the test medium may be a test strip impregnated with one of the indicator dyes and optionally a buffer, or a liquid solution containing the dye.

  • Patent number: 6325980
Abstract: A test strip incubation device and method for developing a test strip having a reagent test pad disposed thereon, the reagent test pad requiring an incubation time, which allows greater accuracy and reliability of test results as well as a narrower window of PASS and FAIL indication concentrations. The device comprises a test strip holder which allows a wetted reagent test pad to be vertically stored in an enclosed reaction chamber during the incubation period. The reaction chamber is bounded by a substantially clear material to allow the user to easily observe the status of the reagent test pad held in the reaction chamber. The enclosed reaction chamber provides a high humidity environment for minimizing water evaporation from the reagent test pad during the incubation period. The device may be economically formed from low cost materials, is simple to use and facilitates disposal of the sample material after testing.

  • Patent number: 5526677
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring the density or specific gravity of a fluid sample uses a single sensor. A reservoir contains another fluid of known density which is not miscible with the fluid sample. Sensors are disposed proximate to the reservoir to detect the passage of the fluid sample through the non-miscible fluid medium. A microprocessor monitors the sensor and calculates the specific gravity of the fluid sample. The microprocessor measures the amount of time one sensor is eclipsed as the fluid sample droplet falls through the fluid medium and calculates the density or specific gravity based on that amount of time. The microprocessor also may measure a second amount of time, the time required for the fluid sample to traverse through the fluid medium between two sensors. The microprocessor can use this second amount of time to measure the fluid droplet diameter or size. The microprocessor corrects the calculated density or specific gravity for any deviation caused by the size of the fluid sample.

  • Patent number: 5420016
Abstract: A rapid method and easy to use unitized test device is disclosed for determining the presence of Helicobacter pylori in a biological tissue specimen by detecting the presence of urease in the tissue. The system basically utilizes a multilayer test device for separating and optimizing the various reactions involved, i.e. the urease in the specimen with a substrate and the ammonia generated thereby with an indicator element.
