Abstract: The invention provides a protective shield device for a brake having a rotating braking element in the form of a ring or drum. The shield comprises a plate which extends opposite the face of at least a part of the rotating element of the brake, and a sheet part which extends the plate by running out from the plane of the latter to penetrate into the internal space of the rotating element in the immediate vicinity thereof. This provides an ejector for the brake which prevents solid particles such as grit entering the brake parts.The invention is particularly applicable to brakes designed for use in motor vehicles.
Abstract: A diaphragm clutch cover assembly is disclosed comprising a cover having a peripheral flange secured to a flywheel, a diaphragm spring, assembly means rockably mounting the diaphragm spring on the cover between axial spaced fulcra and axially applying a predetermined resilient clamping load, and a pressure plate fixed for rotation with and axial displacement in relation to the cover. The resilient clamping load on the diaphragm spring is selected between the peak value of the release load on the diaphragm spring at the minimum reference value and the greater of the final value of the release load at the minimum reference value and the final value of the release load at the maximum reference distance. In the coarse of service life the diaphragm spring breaks contact with one of its fulcra when it rocks from its engagement position and its disengagement position.

Abstract: The invention relates to a device for the power-assisted steering of a vehicle, of the kind comprising a steering column in two parts which are capable of limited relative angular displacement on either side of a neutral position. The assistor means are adapted to act on the steering system in the same sense as the steering column in response to this angular displacement, and comprise a hydraulic power source, a distributor, and an assisting jack. The distributor comprises stators connected to the power source and the jack, and two corresponding rotors each integral with a respective part of the steering column and being provided with passages for the hydraulic fluid.
Abstract: A device for setting the closed position of a valve of the type comprising a lever having a ramp acting on a thrust member of a slidable assembly. Adjustment is effected by adjustment means comprising a cam device interposed between the thrust member and the ramp on the lever. The cam device is disposed eccentrically of its journals and it is displaced angularly from the exterior by inserting a screwdriver or the like through a hole in the body. Ratchet teeth are provided on the cam device and cooperate with pawls for retaining the desired position of the cam device when it is attained.
Abstract: The invention relates to a hydraulic control, particularly for automobile brake systems having two separate independent brake circuits, in which a master cylinder comprises a first chamber in which pressure is controlled by the driving-in of a master piston under the action of a brake pedal, the first chamber forms a part of a first hydraulic closed system comprising a first brake circuit, the master cylinder also has a second pressure chamber forming part of a second closed system comprising a second brake circuit. The second chamber is adapted to be fed by a source of fluid pressure and the master cylinder is provided with a plunger the opposite faces of which are respectively subjected to the pressures of the two closed systems. The master piston is disposed in the first chamber coaxially with the plunger in such a manner as to permit mechanical intervention in the event of hydraulic failure in the first closed system.
Abstract: The invention relates to an acceleration detector for use as a decelerometer for controlling an electrically operated axle brake, particularly for a towed vehicle.The acceleration detector comprises a movable member which is capable of moving against the action of elastic means permanently urging it towards a stop, and a fixed member comprising a proximity detector adapted to generate a voltage proportional to the distance separating it from the movable member.According to the invention, the stop for the movable member is spaced from the proximity detector by a predetermined distance such that, as soon as the proximity detector is switched on, for example by depressing the brake pedal of the towing vehicle, the output voltage of the detector is other than zero.

Abstract: The invention relates to a power-assisted braking device of the kind having a master piston sliding in a master cylinder, a jack having a piston linked to the master piston by an interconnection such as a rod, a source of auxiliary hydraulic pressure, and a distributor which feeds the jack with auxiliary hydraulic pressure and which is operated by a brake pedal and two mutually articulated levers. The unit consisting of these two levers cooperates with a fixed point and has three working points of which the first cooperates with the pedal, the second cooperates with the distributor and the third cooperates with the master piston. According to the invention, the first and second working points are located on one of the levers (the primary lever) and the fixed point and the third working point are located on the other lever (the secondary lever). This enables the distributor to be acted on directly by the pedal thereby providing more precise operation.
Abstract: The invention comprises a wear-compensating device for incorporation in a control linkage used for operating a motor vehicle clutch. The control linkage is arranged between the declutching fork and the clutch pedal and the device comprises two coupling parts, each of which is linked respectively to two successive sections of the linkage.According to the invention, the outermost coupling part carries a sleeve divided into jaws so that it can pass elastically from a free configuration of disengagement, at which the jaws are at a distance from the innermost coupling part, to an enforced configuration of engagement, at which the jaws are clamped to the latter.The device compensates for wear of the clutch friction surfaces by changing the effective length of the control linkage.
Abstract: An expansion tank and water box device for a heat exchanger with a nest of parallel tubes, such as a radiator of a motor vehicle, in which the water box housed inside the expansion tank is maintained by the assembly of the tank with the hollowed plate through which extend the ends of the tubes. Abstract: The invention comprises an anti-lock braking circuit of the kind which incorporates a modulation device between the master cylinder and the slave sylinder of the respective wheel. The modulation device is controlled by a pickup sensitive to wheel locking and comprises an isolation valve which in its normally open position establishes communication between the master cylinder and the slave cylinder, and a pressure drop regulation valve which can establish communication between the slave cylinder and a discharge. When locking of a wheel is sensed by the pickup, the isolation valve is closed and the pressure drop regulation valve is opened to connect the slave cylinder to the discharge, thereby reducing the braking force applied to the respective wheel.
Abstract: A torsion damping center and a clutch plate assembly incorporating the torsion damping center are disclosed. The torsion damping center comprises a first hub which is the actual hub of the clutch plate assembly and which is coaxial to a second hub and mounted for relative angular displacement within predetermined limits, and a damper ring operatively interposed between the hubs for a range of relative angular displacements. The damper ring comprises a pair of identical annular plates of sheet metal construction and a pad of elastic material sandwiched between the plates and bonded thereto. The plates have at least one tooth at their inner periphery for connection for rotation with the first and second hubs respectively. The damper ring constitutes a first damping stage; the second damping stage comprising a series of circumferentially disposed coil springs interposed between the second hub and a friction disc carried on an annular subassembly.
Abstract: The invention is applicable to a clutch friction plate of the kind comprising a pair of spaced washers mounted on a hub and located on either side of a friction disc provided with friction linings on both faces around its periphery. The friction disc is angularly movable to a limited extent relative to the hub against the action of spring means located in openings in the washers and a frictional couple resulting from the hub being elastically axially gripped between the washers.Slot means are provided in at least one of the washers leading into openings therein so as to free at least one axially flexible region which can then act to effect the axially gripping and thereby adjust the frictional effect between the two relatively movable parts.
Abstract: A fin and tube assembly for a heat exchanger, and a method of making the assembly. A fin and tube assembly for a heat exchanger, such as a motor vehicle radiator, comprises a plurality of apertured fins in stacked relation traversed by one or more tubes. The or each tube is of oblong cross section with initially flat flanks interconnecting rounded ends. After deformation by expansion or distension which exceeds the elastic limit along the rounded ends, the tube is in intimate contact with the similarly configured apertures or collars with which they may be lined, with the longitudinal sides of tube bearing under pressure against inwardly protruding convex edges which define part of the apertures. Alternatively, the tube may be initially of quasi-elliptical cross section and connected to a source of negative pressure to effect a deformation thereof prior to its introduction through the apertures.
Abstract: A distribution device in the passenger space of a motor vehicle for the air arriving from an inlet opening of a chamber towards two ducts extending from said chamber and reaching air outlet nozzles, usually upper and lower, which comprises a flap rotatably mounted, for the distribution, about an axis at a distance from the air inlet opening. The flap has two branches forming a V with an obtuse apex angle and controlling the respective inlets of the ducts and the edges of which, which are remote for the pivoting axis, are constantly in the respective outlet ducts.
Abstract: A positioning device with a pivotable positioning member. The positioning member comprises a guide lug spaced from and parallel to its pivot axis, the guide lug having a head portion which may be introduced into an enlarged end of a guideway in a support but which maintains the positioning member parallel to the pivot axis. An abutment prevents the guide lug from re-entering the enlarged end of the guideway. A strip integrally formed with the positioning member has a protruding portion which bears against one side of the support tensioning the strip. The pivotal mounting is afforded by co-operable detents including a pivot pin (e.g. on the support) with a tapered end which snaps into an aperture defined by a pair of integrally formed flexible strips (e.g. on the positioning member). The oblong aperture permits the pivot pin to shift therein as the pointer at the other end of the positioning member undergoes substantially rectilinear displacement.
Abstract: The invention relates to internal-external shoe drum brakes, or so-called "crown" brakes in which the braking member is a drum or crown having braking surfaces formed on the annular inner and outer surfaces.The brake is provided with a calliper mounted on a fixed bracket, the calliper surrounding the crown and being adapted to apply brake shoes mounted on either side of the crown against the braking surfaces.The calliper is mounted on the fixed bracket for radial movement with respect to the crown and to this end is provided with at least one transverse lug formed with an aperture which slidably engages a guide pin mounted on the fixed bracket.The guide lug is formed separately from the calliper and is detachably secured thereto so that it can be released from the calliper when it is desired to change the brake shoes.
Abstract: A release bearing having an axial bore is received for sliding movement on a guide member thereon. The bore is provided with substantially rigid bearing bosses disposed at the axial extremities of generatrices of the bore and having inclined leading edges. In operation they deflect the dirt or grime that may be present on the guide member into passages circumferentially between bearing bosses and then on to a cavity or recess in the bore. Preferably the pairs of bearing bosses are interconnected by axial ribs. The axial ribs in turn delimit grooves which make up the dirt and grime collecting recess or cavity. Alternatively, intermediate bosses may be provided between pairs of bearing bosses. The bearing surface of the ribs may be part cylindrical or define line or point contact.
Abstract: The invention concerns a friction disc for a clutch, of the kind comprising a central hub having a plurality of radial blades carrying the friction linings on each outer face. The friction disc is provided with axial resiliency or "give" by forming each radial blade from two axially displaceable plates which are urged apart elastically, and coupling means are provided between the plates to limit the degree of axial displacement thereof. According to the invention, the coupling means comprise a lug integral with one plate which engages in a simple recess formed in the lateral edge of the other plate. Preferably a lug and a recess are formed in each plate, and the plates are identical.The construction simplifies the assembly of the friction disc and provides significant cost savings in manufacture.
