Abstract: A system for seamless integration of a handheld device, as a secondary display and input device, to remotely interact with a host device. The host device receives data from a remote location. One or more handheld devices, receive data provided by the host device. Each of the handheld devices includes one or more controllers. Each of the controllers provides control input data to the associated handheld device. The handheld devices each have one or more input modules, such as a microphone, or Wi-Fi port, to receive the control input data as well as one or more output modules, such as a display screen and/or speaker that outputs processed data, such as video and/or audio data. The output data is specific to a particular one of the handheld devices.

Abstract: A method for self-instruction of a user's hands on an object such as a musical instrument or sports equipment. The method includes accessing finger placement data corresponding to a sequence of predetermined finger placements on a plurality of objects. A position for each finger is sensed on one or more object representations. A finger placement indication is provided on the one or more object representations. The finger placement indication corresponds to each finger of the based on the finger placement data. Each finger placement indication location is compared with an associated sensed position for each finger and a determination is made whether the finger placement indication matches the sensed position for each finger.

Abstract: Exemplary systems and methods for server management are provided. An exemplary system comprises a plurality of servers, with each server having the ability to access a database or, in some embodiments, be configured to perform a calculation, computation or make a determination of a particular value, values or other information. A communications network delivers queries to each server whereby a look-up table directs query processing by the servers. Further embodiments of the system feature a program logic controller for rebalancing the workload of the network servers. Exemplary methods of processing queries on the system comprise submitting a query to the network, communicating the query to each server in the network and each server looking-up on a look-up table the processing responsibilities of the servers in the network. The query is processed by the server having primary responsibility for processing the query while other the servers monitor query processing.

Abstract: A multi-user online application network computing configuration maintains application level information at a portal or lobby server, rather than at each individual application server or host machine. Users can therefore learn about and select a desired application, such as an online game, through communication with the lobby server. After appropriate authorization processing, users can contact the associated application server, such as a game host, to begin their participation. The lobby server can therefore reduce the bandwidth requirements and other operating demands on the application server. In addition, cross-application communications in real-time are facilitated through the lobby server concept. The multi-user application environment also provides a common data model for maintaining user information, such as for establishing a ladder ranking system in the online gaming context in which user achievements are recorded and shared among users and among the different game applications.

Abstract: A control docking unit can be coupled with a portable processing unit to provide alternate control operation for the portable unit. The control docking unit can be configured to position a display on the portable processing unit to facilitate use of one or more controls provided on the control docking unit. The control docking unit can position the display of the portable processing unit in a fixed or variable position. The controls from the docking unit can be coupled to the portable processing unit using an electrical, mechanical, or electromechanical interface. The electrical interface can be a wired or wireless communication link. The controls on the control docking unit can be configured to be substantially in the same configuration as a control unit for a similar fixed device. The portable processing unit can be configured to provide additional functions, features, or enhanced operation when coupled to the control docking unit.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for transmitting stream logging data via a web browser are disclosed. A client device that implements a web browser may open a time-limited socket that remains open for a predetermined period of time. The client opens a socket to a server for bidirectional communication, which the server can transmit data across. The server sends streaming logging data to the client via the client-side socket and server side socket. Upon occurrence of an event, the server sends instructions that cause the client to keep the client-side socket open. Upon receipt of the instructions from the server the client resets a timer associated with the time-limited client side socket to keep the client-side socket open for an additional predetermined period of time.

The media player identifies an advertising insertion event, which may be based on a viewer profile. Upon identification of an advertising insertion event, the media player varies playback of the received content to add advertising information.

Abstract: Change management in a relational database may be implemented by indexing changes by copying the database to a new revision when a change is made to one or more items in the database. The new revision may be committed as a single unit and all changes stored together under a single revision. Database users may be notified of the new revision that is available for use. Software configuration issues may be simplified through the use of a configuration language that separates the logical configuration between software components from the specific configuration of those components. Secure data center administration may be handled through the use of control hosts.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for implementing peer-to-peer relay. In one implementation, a method of building a redundancy list in a peer system in a peer-to-peer relay network includes: receiving a first message including first identification information at a first peer system from a second peer system connected to said first peer system in a peer-to-peer relay network; storing said first identification information; receiving a second message including second identification information at said first peer system from a third peer system connected to said first peer system in said peer-to-peer relay network; comparing said second identification information with said first identification information; building a redundancy update message; and sending said redundancy update message to said third peer system.

Abstract: A method of scrolling in a graphical user interface includes: receiving a command to scroll a plurality of contents icons displayed in the graphical user interface; and retrieving an appropriate number of additional contents icons from a contents icon database to provide a scrolled display in the graphical user interface, wherein the contents icon database is divided into a plurality of entries, each entry of the plurality of entries including at least data for a contents icon of the plurality of contents icons and a link to a contents file, each entry of the database is configured to be fixed in size so that the data for the contents icon can be quickly accessed, and the contents icon can be scrolled in the graphical user interface at a relatively high speed.

Abstract: A system and method for camera navigation that provides a player with an unobstructed, non-disorienting view of a target is provided. The system includes a memory for storing a camera navigation/control model, a central processing unit for executing the camera navigation/control model to provide unobstructed and non-disorienting target character views, and a graphics processing unit configured to render the unobstructed views of the target in an image for display. In addition, the camera navigation/control model includes an object detection model, line-of-sight restoration models to restore a line-of-sight view of an obstructed target, and a camera navigation path model. In the method, a collision probe is sent on a straight line path between a camera and a target whereby line-of-sight obstructions are detected if the probe intersects with polygonal sides of an object. A line-of-sight restoration method is used to move the camera to provide an unobstructed view of the target.

Abstract: A demonstration video game permits garners a more complete game experience while promoting a desire to acquire permission to continue playing. In some embodiments, a video game is implemented with trigger metrics. While a user may initially experience most or all of the full version of the game in a demonstration mode, the mode implements trigger metrics to erode game play characteristics, such as character, object, event and/or environmental features, during video game play in the demonstration mode. Thus, fewer play characteristics may be available as play continues in this mode. Multiple trigger metrics may gradually and successively limit play characteristics as play with the game continues. As the gamer loses functionality, the user may be prompted with the trigger metrics to purchase permission to continue the game in a non-demonstration mode that disables the trigger metrics and returns the game to the more complete version.

Abstract: A gaming peripheral for use during play of an electronic video game includes a board member and a rotational element extending from a bottom surface of the board member. The board member is rotatable about any of three mutually orthogonal axes, by a user standing on a top surface of the board member and applying a force to the rotational element which is contacting an opposing surface, such as the ground. The board member includes a rotation determination element for generating data representative of the rotation of the board member about any of the three axes. The rotational element and the rotation determination element can be disengageably engaged with the board member, such that a conventional, standalone board member, for example, a skateboard, is readily convertible between the gaming peripheral and the standalone skateboard.

Abstract: A product distribution and payment system for limited use or otherwise restricted digital software products. Digital content data comprising a software product to be rented is made available to customers through a detachable local storage medium, such as a DVD or CD-ROM disc, or over a network connection. The product digital content is capable of being accessed and played back through a computer or game console at the customer site. The software product may comprise a limited use product that is restricted in the number of plays or duration of use. The customer is allowed to download and purchase the product using his computer or playback console. The product purchase information is encoded and transmitted to the content distributor. When the preset time or number of plays has elapsed the software program is frozen and access to the program is not allowed.
